View Full Version : carbine light position
Dear Mr.Vickers,
I wanted to get your input on proper light position on a railed carbine. I know you advocate the X300 at 12 oclock. If that is not an option, what is your next best light position? Lets say you're a right handed carbine shooter, do you mount the light at 3 oclock or 9 oclock?
Lastly, what is your opinion on smaller lights at 6 oclock?

Thank you

If 12 o'clock is not available look at 10 or 2 o'clock- your choice as both have the same pros/cons
6 o'clock in many ways is the least desirable as it more easily masked when working around cover
But remember a white light is mandatory on a fighting gun- right after a good optic- just figure out what makes sense for you

I run an X300 at 12 o'clock on an extended rail - my favorite white light setup and one that I have used for Years

Google the Daniel Defense Vickers signature carbine - I run an X300 at 12 o'clock on a DD extended rail - my favorite white light setup and one that I have used for Years

As a follow on question, if using a 10:30 or 2:30 mounting location, do you still prefer to use a remote switch to keep the activation located at 12:00 whenever possible?

Switch placement at the 10 & 2 position is personal preference - the only thing that I would suggest is your being able to activate the switch with your support hand when the weapon is mounted in either shoulder

Mr. Vickers, what is your opinion on running either a tape-switch or a click tail cap? Do you have a preference?

I prefer momentary on/off which means tape switch vs click tail cap
I prefer momentary on/off which means tape switch vs click tail cap
To be clear, you run the Surefire X300 in the 12 o'clock position and use the XT07 Remote Dual Switch Assembly? Where do you mount the remote switch, and how do you recommend attaching it?
Thanks for the help - I got the DD rail on your recommendation but not a light yet.

I don't run a tape switch with the X300 as it is ambi and pushing on the toggle switch allows momentary use - toggle up or down is permanent on

Mr. Vickers,
When running an NVD equipped rifle (AR w/ATPIAL + White light), what would your optimal setup be? This is with no limitation on product type/position, switch type/position, or rail length. (DBAL, PEQ15, ITAL, OTAL, CQBL, Surefire, Streamlight, Insight... etc) I am specifically interested in your light, laser, and switch position on the rail.
I have been through a plethora of configurations over the years and have found that just about every setup has compromised something. I am very interested to see which category you would first compromise, if any at all. (eg: grip, weight distribution, IR splash-back, light position...)
Your input would be greatly valued
-Andrew
