I have some questions about the grip when shooting a handgun with one hand.

What do you do with the thumb on your shooting hand? Do you keep it in the same position as when shooting two handed, or do your curl the thumb down to touch the middle finger, or something else?

Does it make a difference if the gun has a thumb safety like a 1911, since one might want to keep their thumb on top of the safety?

Do you grip harder when shooting one handed?

Do you do anything different with your grip when shooting weak hand only vs strong hand only?

Do you cant the gun slightly when shooting one handed, or hold it straight up like when shooting two handed, and why?

Thanks.

Hello JTS.

I keep my thumb in pretty much the same place as when shooting with two hands. And yes, on a 1911, on top of the thumb safety. Really concentrate on high grip. No need to cock the pistol one way or another. If you feel it gives you an anatomical advantage, then by all means, tilt it a bit.

As far as grip tension goes, it varies a bit on whether you are bulls eye accuracy shooting at distance, where your grip may be a bit relaxed or whether you are more up close and personal firing multiples. In this case, and contrary to basic rifle marksmanship say, you would increase muscular input.

One thing I do differently on support hand shooting is close my dominant eye and use my non-dominant. It lines up directly over my support arm and eye I can build a cheek stock weld of sorts in the pocket of my support shoulder.

Thanks!
