Over the weekend I had the pleasure of attending a two day course with John McPhee(June 23rd through the 24th). The course incorporated both Pistol & Carbine on the first day(separately) and on day 2 we incorporated both for some great training.
John opens the course explaining that he encourages all questions(and I usually have plenty so I got to test his patience in this department) and stated emphatically that he would make us all better shooters. I've trained with several SME's at this point and although I've been able to pick up on a few things from each, none has been able to transform my performance so significantly and quickly. When I arrived to the course I was shooting fairly well and had spent the better part of two years trying to perfect everything about my shooting. On day one John threw me for a loop, he changed several aspects of my fundamentals. That was a tough pill to swallow because these were techniques I had learned in previous courses(so a lot of time & money went into that). Initially I had difficulty adjusting and honestly I wondered whether or not it was wise to make these changes after having invested so much in getting to that point. But John is the real deal, I'm a firm believer in his experience & expertise.
Throughout day one John spent a great deal of time explaining the fundamentals that he was showing us. But more importantly he went into great detail to answer WHY, which is a big one for me....I always want an explanation so that I can measure it against logic(hence the username). Couple this with the fact that John had an assistant present(that was just as knowledgeable) & that both of them were intent on helping each shooter on the line and it really has equated to my best experience in any course. Typically the courses I have taken are very drill heavy but at this stage I don't really need someone to give me trigger time(I get enough of that on my own), I need someone to watch my "stroke" and observe where I might be losing efficiency, etc. In my opinion this is the only course that I have taken which can propel a good shooter into a great shooter. The level of hands-on & attention to each course participant was impressive, this wasn't just a shoot'em up class, this was a course where you got your "stuff" straightened out no matter what level you were at.
Needless to say, as soon as I stepped onto the range Sunday morning I had embraced the fundamentals John had walked us through on day one and even I was a little taken back by the results. My shooting was on another level, my speed, my stance, my accuracy, everything was coming together in a way that I had not seen before. A good friend that I train with often, actually took me to the side and complemented me on how impressed he was(we usually rip on each other but I think even he was taken back). Again, I arrived to this course shooting very well(over the last few months I had really tightened everything up & I didn't expect much to change in way of fundamentals) but as John promised he made me a better shooter....A MUCH BETTER SHOOTER! My level of confidence is extremely high right now and I'm really looking forward to training with John in the future.
I HIGHLY recommend any of his courses.
