Great news. I was registered via GG but sent an email to Paul about re-registering. It's rare to have such great training opportunities this close to Chicago.

For the guys going to this, come back with some feedback from John on recticals , using SPR type AR's in 5.56 for this class, and bolt gun users.
Id love to take this with my 3-gun rifle.

Lol.
Tactical Response will be at that range during that weekend as well.
Apples and oranges!

I'm already signed up for a different class in October.
I hope this one goes well and McPhee returns again soon.
I'd really like to get into some longer range stuff.

I look forward to reading any AAR's on this class.
Thanks again to ErikL for bringing these high caliber instructors to our area.

AMAZING class, cannot wait to see SGM McPhee's AAR and write one of my own.

One of the best classes I've been to, I hope to go to more GROM classes in the future.

GROM, being of course, the name of McPhee's new company. You're just gonna have to ask him what it means ;)

It was a great class and I too will wait for John's AAR before submitting comments. I will say for now that I was a complete beginner on the AR platform, and by the end of the first morning I was shooting 1.5" groups at 100 yds. At the end of the second day, I was easily pinging the plate at 650 yds with both my 5.56 and John's 300 Win Mag. I learned a great deal and had a super time. Thanks, John and Sean.

For the guys going to this, come back with some feedback from John on recticals , using SPR type AR's in 5.56 for this class, and bolt gun users.
Id love to take this with my 3-gun rifle.

To address these issues, I was using an MOA reticle (Nightforce with a NP-R2 reticle). John said that the Navy still uses these, but most of the world uses or is switching to MilDot reticles. At 5X magnification, my MOA reticle was essentially a MilDot reticle (1.14 Mil anyways - close enough for what we were doing - maybe not close enough out past 1000yds or for accurate ranging).

So I found the best of both worlds. The NP-R2 reticle was easy to use and to find and maintain holds and I was used to working off MOA, but I could go to 5X magnification and use the reticle as a mildot scope when it made sense (like when shooting with a partner who would call out corrections in mils.)

As for the 5.56 SPR at this class, I didn't have any problems. We shot out to 650 yards, which is stretching the max effective range for my Mk12 SPR, but I was able to successfully make the shot. Most of the shooting was from 100-300 yards, which was a piece of cake for the 5.56.

I shot about 550 rounds in the course, and that is match ammo, so from a cost perspective, the 5.56 has an advantage.

I would say the majority of the class used .308, but I didn't think I was at any disadvantage. John taught for both calibers, explaining ballistics and holds for both.

I wouldn't want to take a bolt gun to this class. Too much reloading.
