View Full Version : 7.62 x 39 vs. 6.8 SPC
Looking to try something different. DPMS has uppers in 7.62 x 39mm, drop-in on standard receivers. Bushmaster and some others have the 6.8 SPC uppers available.
Has anyone tried either of these caliber conversions? I'm especially interested in the 7.62 caliber. Suggestions?
7.62x39 is a fun upper to run. Its slow for matches but great for hunting. Its cheap to shoot..... well it use to be cheap. The problem you have with 7.62 uppers is finding good working mags that will run correctly.
I have no real data to suggest anything that relates to the 6.8
I've owned both.
The 7.62 has cheaper ammo, but reliable magazines are a PITA to find. They also tend to break bolts as they use an opened up bolt face.
The 6.8 has better ballistics (flight and terminal). 6.8 magazines (15 & 25 round) while more expensive than the 7.62x39 mags at least work flawlessly.
I sold my 7.62 upper years ago, the 6.8 I'm keeping.
"but reliable magazines are a PITA to find"
That's not exactly true, PRI sells them but they're marked 6.8spc. Paul at Bravo Co. told a friend of mine that they might work with his 7.62x39 and I have seen first hand they worked and worked well.
I feel like I just gave away the "Bush Baked Beans family recipie"
I must add though, he only bought the 10 round mags for hunting, these I can vouch for.
