This class was offered as a special Kickoff for Alias Training. Even though South Hill, VA is a haul from Pittsburgh and my schedule was pretty full it was definitely worth the trip.
Paul did a great job pulling everything together in such a short period of time. Directions, hotel suggestions etc... were all provided. The transition from the old place seems to be going well and I expect good things from Alias going forward.
This was my third time training with Kyle. I did a one day intro carbine with him last year and a 2 day Pistol/Blade integration class earlier this summer. In addition I have several years of training under my belt averaging 3-4 courses a year.
I am not going to go into great detail. Suffice it to say that the class was very productive. You should definitely take advantage of an opportunity to train with Kyle if you get the chance.
Day One was a long day and covered a lot of material. We confirmed or adjusted the zero on our rifles. We examined the merits of the 100 yard zero shooting from 7-200 yards. We then moved to pistols shooting Kyles pistol tests. Kyle went into details about grip, sight picture and stance. Even though I had just had two days of handgun training with Kyle 2 months before, I still picked up some new things this time around.
After covering transitions we were expected to transition to our handguns for anything inside of 25 yards and if it made sense even back to 50.
Kyle covered shooting from barricades. I have some new things to work on as Kyle's approach makes sense but was different than the instruction I had received from others in the past.
We then moved on to ran through the use of lights during the day in preparation for the night shoot.
Before dinner Kyle brought out several boxes of holsters, hats, kneepads, t-shirts etc.. and a told the class to take what we could use. No one moved until he pointed out that there were some Daniel Defense sights in there. There was definitely some good stuff in those boxes!
After coming back from dinner we worked some of the light reps while we were waiting for complete darkness. We took turns during the night shoot to avoid having 20 carbine lights going at the same time. We worked using the carbine light to light the target while shooting with the handgun and then finished shooting carbine from one set of barricades and handguns (with handheld lights) from the other.
I believe day two started with carbines at 200. We shot more transitions and then shot a 5 station shoot that Kyle sets up that involves shooting on the move, transitioning targets, and shooting targets to the ground. This can be a real round burner.
We followed up with a walkback drill with the handgun. I was pretty drained from the heat and bowed out at 100 yds. I think three guys made it to 125 where the winner calmy made it look easy.
We got some heavy rain at which point we all jammed into a shed where Kyle gave his mindset talk. I won't do the injustice of trying to repeat this. Kyle means what he says and you can see it.
There are lots of details that I skipped over but as Kyle said "If anyone wants to know more, they should have been here." Hopefully others will add to this.
My round count was roughly 500 carbine and 600 handgun. I think it was vice versa for others but I made a lot of transitions to my handgun because I had a few hiccups from a brand new carbine.
Hopefully Paul or someone will post up some pictures.
