I ran up on an SAR-3 5.56 AK this weekend w/6 mags for a good deal. The mags are converted bakelite looking ak-74 mags w/black steel floorplates stamped .223. On 3 of the 6 mags the followers ride higher than the other 3 when empty. Those with the higher follower CAN hold around 31-32 mags, which I know they should not. They all FTF when hand cycling ammo thru the gun trying to verify the mags work. A couple seem to work o.k. part of the time. They all seem to hold the rounds at an odd angle on the feed lips.

Anyone have any advice on a possible fix for these mags? I have already ordered six 30 rd 5.56 bulgarian waffle from K-var so I have new mags on the way but hate to think these mags that came with the gun are a lost cause.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,
Eric

Anyone have any info?

Are the mags toast, sould I just wait till KVAR has the 5.56 bodies and just swap out the floorplate, spring and follower?

Any info would be greatly apprciated.

I was unaware that the SAR-3 would accept the Bulgarian mags, I thought they used the German Weiger mags. Do you have to modify the Bulg. mags? I've seen people modify the 74 mags for the 223 rifles, but haven't seen many without issues. Personally, I'd call them a lost cause and focus on mags that are more appropriate for the rifle.

The correct magazine for this rifle is the steel Wieger - I would attempt to locate some of those and throw the converted bakelites away.

I saw people doing this on the AKforums. Send a message right to Thekatar or Templar here and ask them. They might now and just haven't seen this thread.

ETA: Wow. Took me way too long to reply once I opened this in a new tab. Like I said, Jay would know!
