Can I send my "Pistol Sales Record" to my local police department or does it need to go somewhere special?

Just put it in your safe or filing cabinet and you should be good.
When I purchased the pistol I was given two copies of the pistol sales record and was told to send one of them in to the Michigan State Police Department.

Yeah, I spoke without knowing what I was talking about :agree:

I usually take mine to my local sherrif's office, and they forward it to the state police.
That's a thing? Doesn't the FFL do that? And I'm in the worst gun state in the country.

Nope, the laws have changed (relaxed) over the last year or two (no longer need to go to the sherrif's dept. for a pistol purchase permit), but yes.

I read that I no longer needed a permit to purchase a firearm but do have to mail in the sales record.

I believe that is correct, when the purchase permit stopped being required, you basically just skip the 1st trip to the sherrif's dept (you fill out the exact same paperwork at the point of purchase)...
However I have to say that if you feel unclear about what to do, you should consult your favorite knowledgeable ffl, or local sherrif dept to make sure you are fully covered where your obligations are concerned. I am not a legal authority ofany sort.
Yikes, I had no idea this sort of the thing was done.
I guess, I ought to be more grateful I live in Texas where such state laws don't exist regarding pistol buying and paper work...
dumb question, but did you just look up the gun laws in MI?
When I was there 5 or 6 years ago I needed an in-state ID to even 'register' it with the local PD (dumb, but oh well). I assume all that stuff is still online.

The legal requirements in MI have changed a fair amount in just the last two years (but yes, they should be online), and I think the OP is a resident of MI judging by his location tag.
Buying a pistol in MI is really not complicated, the op is correct, all he has to do is turn in his paperwork.

Texas is a great gun state. I need to move there lol.

I get the impression that Texas, Arizona, and Montana are the places to beat for gun friendliness.
Florida and Georgia aren't bad either.

Yes indeed. I am glad I needn't deal with this here in TX.
Some older lady was asking for my help on another gun forum. She lives in New Jersey. God, the stuff she had to do to get her handgun...

You can add Washington State to the list. Even being a liberal state our gun laws are great.
We had shall issue concealed carry way before most states.
WA is ok, not great, no FA,SBR,SRS
City of Las Vegas requires all pistol purchases to be recorded by LVPD and they issue you a "blue card". Holdover from the gangster/mob days, where the PD wanted to know who had pistols in town and if you don't have the "blue card" they will confiscate the pistol.

Local issue. Local requirement (apparently).
Not sure what the purpose of the question might be here. Why would you not just do as directed and call it a day?

I am with army chief just go by the letter of the law because most of us are not knowledgeable about the laws of your state.

Fellow Michigander here. First you must determine if the agency of the city, township. village, etc. that you live in accepts the paperwork. If that is the case, simply take the paperwork to that agency (usually during normal admin. hours). If your local agency does not accept the paperwork, you will need to take it to the sheriff's department of the county that you live in (again, during admin. hours usually). You will retain one copy for yourself. This copy must be kept with the handgun at any time that you are travelling outside of your residence for the first 30 days from the time that you drop off paperwork to law enforcement.

Or you all can move to a better state.:haha:

While it does suck not being able to SBR or full auto here in WA, concealed carry laws are much, much more important to me because those affect me everyday.

You can mail it but I would call them first to ensure you get the address and attn: correct.
Call me paranoid, but I hand it to them every time. Remember you only have 10 days.
Years ago when I sold a pistol I called my local State Police and asked the Sergeant if I needed to file any paperwork. He said "Why, we don't keep any transaction records? Keep your own records if you feel the need."
At least for now I do not live in a socialist democracy. Good Lord willing we will keep this Country a Constitutional Republic as the wisdom of our Fore Fathers envisioned.
Did I miss it in a post or did the OP not tell us what pistol he purchased? What did you get and how do you like it?

I also would like a SBR and a FA just to have as a toy,(considering the ammo prices how important are this two I don't know ) but we still are better then most places out there considering that on everything else we are a very liberal state with mostly democrats elected.
I usually just throw my receipt in the trash, but then again, I don't live in a People's Republic. YMMV

Save the receipt so you can ask for CS if something goes wrong with what you bought to prove date of purchase.;)

People keep saying that. I don't get it. Texas:
-no open carry
-even accidentally printing can get you arrested
-churches can legally prohibit
-no carry in bars (businesses >51% from alcohol)
-no state or local govt buildings
-no hospitals
-the whole 30.06 thing. "No handgun" signs have the force of law.
-trespassing gets your gun confiscated
-trespassing gets you a class A misdemeanor (no more permit)
I don't know if there's any ideal state, but Texas seems somewhat restrictive to me, and I live in Minnesota, probably one of the bluest states in the country.
