View Full Version : My Five favorite handguns in order.

Itzik
10-20-13, 13:38
They are in that order

Walther PPQ M2 9mm
Sig 229 Extreme Elite 9mm
Glock 19 4th Gen

For Back up or subcompact

S&W Shield 9mm
Glock 26 4th Gen

All my guns have Night sights from Meprolight or TFO's

All this guns are 100% reliable and great shooters and if I may say so they have never malfunctioned in any way.

I have owned and carried a version of the Glock's or the Sig 229 for many years, the new ones are the Walther and the Shield but they have replaced the Glock's and the Sig.

Which guns are your favorite guns and do you trust them 100%?
How often do you shoot them or are they safe queens and which one you carry most of the time?

My favorite in order for me are
Sig P220 Equinox
Glock 17 gen 4 FDE
Beretta 92fs

Sig has truglo night sights and glock has trijicon sights.

Id say I trust them all 100% and I shoot them just as much the same. However I feel more accurate with my glock right now.

I don't have a top 5, I have an only 2 list:

I don't believe in rotations when it comes to social purposes.

1) Para-Ordnance P14-45. Yea, yea... I know. But mine is a 1993 model that runs flawlessly. After several thousand rounds and being carried all the time (it was my only handgun for years) I sent it to Novak's for a new bbl and other upgrades. It gives the ergo and trigger of a 1911 with 14+1 and fits my large meat hooks better than a single stack. It was also my first ever firearm so there is some sentimental attachment. Bottom line - if I could only have one pistol this would be it. Even my friends and coworkers notice my times improve when I break it out at matches.

2) Glock 17, Gen 4. Grippier than a Gen 3 and softer shooting. Hard to beat 18 rounds of 9mm and its simplicity. Without Grip Force Adapters my love of Glocks would fade into just tolerating them as they'd cut my hand and point high.

3) HK USP9. Yes, it's a bit dated and the proprietary rail means running it with the Surefire adapter and limited holster selections or with no light. The DA trigger sucks but it's a Variant 1 so I carry it cocked and locked. Softest shooting 9mm I've used and it's uber reliable. I'm convinced if I could stuff the magazine with rocks the gun would load them. ;)

4) M&P 340. Super light and disappears no matter what I'm wearing. It's pretty much always on me. Big dot front sight and a U notch rear. Once I get the CT laser grips it will be complete.

5) Glock 34, Gen 4. Though a recent addition to the family I find myself taking it out to shoot more than the others lately. The trigger is lighter than the standard Glock setup and a bit heavier than my G17L. Great size for a do it all sidearm.

** Thought hard about putting the G19 on the list as it's a marvelous compromise between controllability and concealability. But I'm a big guy and can get away with concealing larger pistols (thus the P14 and G34 making the list). And I carry a G21 w/ X300 concealed all the time on and off duty.

1. 1950's vintage S&W K-22 with a 6" barrel, Magna stocks, and a Tyler T-Grip or a Pachmayr grip adapter. ANY K-frame set up this way is ridiculously easy to shoot well. The K-22 is super accurate and it feels like it's growing out of the end of my arm. Damn, I'm old.

2. G17 cut for G19 mags. My only carry/match gun since I discovered it. I was going to try to shoot a deer with it this year, but life got in the way. Next year for sure...

3. S&W Model 29-2 with a 4" barrel. Woods gun.

4. Mark IV Series 70 1911. Lightly customized. My carry gun before I discovered Glocks.

5. Keeping this spot open.

1. My 1911s
2. Walther PPQ (Best polymer out to date)
3. Glock 17 Gen 4 (Easiest polymer to work on)
4. Dan Wesson .357 Magnum (with a 6 or 8 inch barrel, what a fun gun)
5. P226 that works

If I could ever get a CZ SP-01 Tactical... I'm sure I would replace the 226 with it (with CGW trigger work)

2. S&W Model 27-2
3. HK P2000SK

Couldn't possibly rank them as each is beloved for it's own character:

J-Frames, 642 & 3" 36-1
P229 Enhanced Elite
Buck Mark Standard

And since I know the Colt 1911 is a favorite even though I was recently coerced into swapping the 1991-A1, I am going to include the one in transit that I haven't seen yet. Not much of a stretch to expect to swoon over an O1918 Black Army.

Big surprise is the anticipated love I did not feel for full or compact MP45s. Great tools that just did nothing for me.

Mine would be

Glock 35 Gen4
Glock 34 Gen4
Glock 20SF
Glock 22 Gen 3
My 1911

I have kind of boxed myself in a little on platforms. I decided to move to Glock once I realized I wanted to compete.

I like the 34 and 35 leaps and bounds above the others, though. They really have "soul," which is saying a lot for a Glock.

Out of the handguns that I have actually had/experience with, this is my top five.

1.HK P30 V1 9x19 hands down, this is my current EDC. The take-up is a little long, but with practice, it works very well.

2.M&P FS9, I would honestly own this one now, probably even EDC it instead of the P30 (because of price), if I were not concerned with the issues surrounding it. I do understand that they are mostly resolved, but I will wait a little while longer before giving it another go.

3.Glock 17, concerned with reliability issues, although I have not experienced them with the 17 first hand.

4.Glock 19, I had one with obvious ejection issues, and I am wary of buying again because of this.

5.HK 45c, I would rank the HK 45c higher if I could mount a X300 with no mods. This IMO is the best .45 out there for EDC. If I were going to a .45 handgun, this would be it.

Since you said HANDGUNS, not pistols, I'm in a tough spot, but, here goes:

1. SAA - any flavor.
2. 1911
3. P7M8
4. Colt Python or S&W 686 4"
5. Snubby revolver - J-frame or Detective Special equally

Please note - not a single handgun on that list has graced my hip except for "fun shoots" in over a decade. If you asked top 5 "carry guns," I'd have to go:

1. HK P2000
2. G19
3. HK P30L
4. Kahr PM9
5. Sig P226R

and all in 9mm...

Glock 19 Gen4 x2 (Both are reliable in several thousand rounds between the two of 'em.)
Commander 1911 built on a Colt (built by me) (I got this one at about 2400. I gotta check the log book. It may be more. It's malfunctioned several times, but only when using the terrible ass Para magazines.)

I trust them both completely.

I will give two guns an honorable mention:

Beretta M9 (Brother has a commercial M9, and he has nearly 5k on it with no malfs.)

HK P2000 (my girlfriend has owned at least one since they were introduced, and her oldest one has almost 18k on it, with only two malfunctions from aluminum cased ammo. She carries a USP9C now.)

Favourites...well, not going to screw this list up with any sort of prioritizing for practical reasons!

1) Series 70 Colt. Always has been, always will be.

2) Delta Elite, recent production.

3) Glock 20, Hacks, X300

4) West German 226

5) Glock 17, Hacks, X300.

In reverse order:

The G17 is what I shoot now 95% of the time.

I gave the Sig to my wife, who doesn't have to overcome years of Glock and 1911 trigger presses and doesn't short stroke it when going fast.

I kept the 20 and love it, but don't shoot it as often as I'd like because I got sick of not being able to follow through on shots because I was busy diving for the brass before someone else got it.

Delta Elite...don't have one at the moment. Didn't really trust the ones from the 80s which were the only ones I had much experience with until relatively recently. Currently trying to fix that.

Series 70. If I have to explain this I don't want to be a member here anymore.

Colt Gold Cup Commander. I grew up shooting and loving the 1911 and the 45 ACP. It feels good in my hand, it's American and the 1911 won first place in both World Wars. It's been a constant companion for over two decades
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n289/SgtSongDog/Handguns/DSC_0023.jpg

Walther PPQ. The first worthy successor to the 1911. All the controls you need and none you don't. Streamlined, efficient, lightweight, well balanced and a great trigger for a modern handgun. It's so good, I can almost forgive it for being a 9mm
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n289/SgtSongDog/Handguns/20120323_1726532.jpg

Smith & Wesson Model 686. With it's 6 inch full underlug barrel, it's a heavy beast but it shoots straight and is comfortable even with the heaviest of 357 Magnum loads. It's trigger is light and smooth and has the best double action pull I've ever tried. I bought it used for $300 back in the late eighties. The guy who had it before me took it to a pistol smith who knew what he was about that gave it an amazing trigger and tuned the action for bowling pin shooting. He fired maybe a box of 38s through it and took it back to the gunshop. One of the best bargains I ever made
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n289/SgtSongDog/Handguns/DSC_0002_zpsf66d1c5b.jpg

Ruger Single Six Flatgate. It was made back in the fifties and is one of the best shooting, best looking Rugers ever made, with it's traditional SAA style front sight and low profile drift rear. Yes, the modern style sights are more practical, but they just don't fit in. Best of all, is how it talks to you when you thumb the hammer- clickclickclick. The Ruger Single Six is a solid, reliable handgun and shoots good, one of the finest 22 pistols ever made
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n289/SgtSongDog/MarlinRuger.jpg

The original Ruger Vaquero. It's not as svelte or as fine handling as the trimmed down version or the Colt SAA, but it's brute strength will let you bring out the best in the 45 Colt for truly impressive performance in the field. It doesn't talk to you as nicely as a 3 screw Ruger when thumbing back the hammer and it throws me off that you don't bring the hammer back to half cock to load it, but there is a trigger replacement that will fix that. It's fixed sights give it cleaner lines and I love the case hardening finish on the frame

1) M&P 9 FS. I shoot it very well 15 yds and in and its the first handgun that I put a decent amount of rounds through.

2) Any 1911 made by Colt. I have only shot two and I will own my own some day when I am rich and famous. I bought a Kimber thinking it would be better than a Colt, what a let down.

3) Berretta 92FS Vertec. First handgun I ever owned.

4) P2000. My buddy has one and if it wasn't a DA/SA and I had know that HK had different trigger options this would probably be number 1.

5) Ruger 22/45. Best semi auto 22 pistol ever.

They are all a compromise to some degree between legislation and production value.

To be slightly less cynical, my list:

The one I have 5,000 rounds through
The one I have 30,000 rounds through
The one I have 10,000 rounds through
The one I have 3,000 rounds through.

Sentimentally, I would have to say:

My Smith 625-7 3" in .45 Colt (one of less than 200 from a limited run)
My Smith 696 .44 Spl.
My Smith 4506-1 (my first duty pistol)
Sig Trailside .22 6"
Any (all) of my Wilson 1911s

From a practical, use them all the time standpoint:

Glock 19 Gen3
M&P 9mm compact
Glock 19 Gen4
M&P .45 Compact
Smith 340 M&P

The sentimental faves get less range time lately as I am trying to focus on my carry guns more. I still will carry a 1911 from time to time, but I find myself carrying either my G19s or M&Ps much more often. I am putting about 1k rounds per month out in practice.

1) Browning Hi Power Mark III: I have about 10,000 rds through mine it has been 100% reliable and I simply shoot it better than any other pistol that I have shot

2) M1911: I have a Springfield and again is a great shooter and the M1911 is a classic design

3) S&W M&P 9. Mine is a 2010 production that is accurate and has been 100% reliable and for me it was the first polymer pistol that I really liked shooting. This is now the pistol I'm shooting the most and is my nightstand pistol.

4) M&P Shield: Enjoy how this pistol shoots and this is the pistol I carry and would use it to protect me and my family if we are out of the house. Plus it is first pistol my wife has an interest in shooting.:)

5) Beretta 92FS: This is my first pistol that was a Christmas gift from my parents when I was in college. Although not my favorite shooter it is a gun that I would never part with.

M1911 (I got a Kimber Custom II at cost for my first handgun ever. The QC and CS was lacking as it came with a broken sear that they blamed me for, but after I had a new one put in and had a local smith do some trigger work and put on new sights, it's the most accurate pistol I own)

M&P9L CORE with Apex FSS and RAM - I love this pistol
M&P9c with Apex DCAEK and RAM - I carry this off duty
HK45 with LEM - I've never shot better with any pistol than I have with this, but I don't own one :(
HK P30 with LEM - extremely impressive pistol, if it was striker, it'd basically be the best pistol ever designed
Sig P226 in 9mm - I learned to shoot on this, but I don't own one

Ehhhhh... I'm kind of a "utility" guy.

1. Walther PPQ ("M1"), my first choice for range fun. Have owned.
2. Glock 19 Gen 4, my first choice for EDC. Currently own & carry.
3. Glock 23 Gen 4, what I'd own if I could only have 1 firearm. Currently own.
4. Springfield TRP Operator. Have not owned. Would fire up some Marvin Gaye and do filthy things to one.
5. Leaving this spot open.

In general, I have a preference for striker fired, service style poly pistols with 4"-4.5" barrels. PPQ, Glock 19/23/32, M&P full size, etc.

Ill bite,
1.My used late 90's gen 3 glock 17 with a new slide , (the original cracked), talon sandpaper grips and Hack sights. (Finally fixed the ejection problem) the trigger is just so smooth
2.My newer glock 17 gen 3, RTF almost have the ejection problem fixed trigger not as smooth as my old gen 3

My Glock 17 gen 1 is my favorite. I just shoot it better than anything else. Its one of those weapons that just "feels" right. Almost like an extension of my arm.
Next favorites are an early gen 2 glock 19
Gen 2 glock 17
Russian Makarov in .380
And my old glock 30 is pretty sweet too.

These kind of posts are very arbitrary but fun to put together.

My 5 favorite for duty/CCW

1. Gen 3 G19 (Mine is a 2006 vintage and haven't any problems in my time shooting it. I've carried it more than any other non-duty pistol I own.)

2. RTF2 G17 (I really like the frame texture on this one)

3. Gen 4 G26 (My newest off duty pistol. Haven't had issues with it yet. I used to have a Gen 3 years ago but got rid of it. The new Gen 4 modifications are big improvements
over the Gen 3 version of this pistol)

4. Gen 3 G22 (Issued pistol. My agency's training program is pretty good and I end up shooting this one a lot. It would not be by first choice in a duty pistol but I'm
confident in my abilities with it and shoot it well)

5. Smith and Wesson 686-5 4" (The list called for handguns so I threw this one on the list. It's my woods carry/hunting back up)

4. Beretta M9 (may be moving up the list as it's new for me)
5. 1911

I trust no firearm 100%, but I have faith in the top 4 on my list. I've never had much luck with 1911's and HP ammo but I thoroughly enjoy shooting them nonetheless. None of my pistols are safequeens but I do not mistreat or neglect them either. All of the above have marginal stopping power compared to any long gun of choice so I keep that in perspective. I prefer full size pistols and the M&P's work great for me. When not at work the pistol I always carry is a Ruger LCP .380 due to the size/weight and ease of carry. The M&P rides along in my vehicle.

In no particular order:

1. S&W M&P9 FS with Apex goodies
2. S&W M&P9 Pro 5" with Apex goodies
3. Springfield Armory 1911 that I had customized. It would shoot ragged one hole groups if I did my part. Sold it ~15 years ago unfortunately. Would love to have that gun back.
4. Ruger 22/45
5. Ruger LCP-Just for the fact that it is small enough to throw in my pocket and carry no matter what I'm wearing and so far it works every time I pull the trigger. Not the funnest gun to shoot by any stretch but I think it deserves to be on the list just for helping me stay armed when otherwise I might not carry a larger gun.

I am a bit of an oddball in handguns that are my favorite, but here it goes.

HK USP .45- This is the 1st handgun I ever fired as a child. I have been obsessed with it ever since. I get that it's bulky, has a propriety rail, and that it is difficult to carry, but for me it's a rail driver. One of the most accurate .45's I've ever shot. I still am trying to afford one though and it will be my next handgun purchase.

Glock 17- In my opinion, the perfect full-size, high capacity 9mm. Lightweight, accurate, rugged, reliable, easy to shoot, concealable, great trigger.

Glock 19/23- My carry gun is currently a G23, and I carry it every day. These sizes of Glocks are fantastic, easy to conceal with great capacities.

HK P30- Hands down one of the best feeling guns I have ever fired. Super accurate, good capacity gentle recoil and reliability to hell and back. Great DA/SA trigger.

Glock 30- The Glock 30 to me is the best "Compact" .45 on the market. Accurate (More so than most Glocks for some reason) super soft shooting. It has better capacity than most full-size .45's and it fits into a Handgun a tad larger than the G19/G23 models, I love it.

I really sound like a Glock fanboy here, and I'm not trying to be it's just these are the handguns that are my personal favorites out of the hundreds of handguns that I have shot, and actively shoot today.

Top five I own and shoot...

Number one Glock19 what can be said that has not already been said...

Number two Browning Buck Mark for small game hunting and target work its my go to gun..

Number three Colt Python 6 inch dressed in blue Its a freakn work of art what I enjoy most is the faces of other shooters when they shoot it double action or single.

Number four Ruger Bisley 7.5 in 44 mag I love the grip at rest and in the roll so much right not much wrong the only thing I dislike is the roll on print on the cylinder wished it was smooth and the front sight should be golden beaded.

Number five Colt Government 380 due to looks and surprising shoot ability its fun to punch tight little groups with a pocket pistol.
