I am in the market for a new EDC knife and I wanted to see what everyone is carrying these days. I am leaning towards and auto (OTF) but I am open to anything.
Post pictures of your EDC knifes. I am currently carrying a MOD CQD Mark 1.

although, if you're interested in auto knives...the all black folder is a Piranha automatic. S30V blade, very nice. i don't carry it for legal reasons tho.
its pretty stupid that i am allowed to carry a concealed pistol, but not an automatic folder, but oh well, dems da rules.

It's lightweight, flat, easy to carry, holds a very nice edge, and has cut, hacked or sawn open thousands of things over the years. I got it on sale somewhere, and it's probably the best $35 I ever spent. :)

All eminently functional for EDC tasks required. All inexpensive enough that there's no hardship if they are lost or have to be ditched.

I have never had a need to go any higher then my SOG Trident (SAO)
The assisted opening keeps it legal almost everywhere (as its not technically an auto), but it opens just as fast as one...and the seatbelt/cord cutter comes in handy!
but the best is that not one of mine has ever broken on me, and thay have all been in the $100 area!!!
I used to carry a Benchmade AFCK for about 9-10 years. I recently switched to a Emerson M-Wave. I like it a lot but I miss the way the AFCK carries in my pocket.
The top of the pocket clip is located very close to the end of the knife so it rides low in the pocket with very little handle sticking out of the pocket.
On occasion I carry my Bud Nealy X-Cel. It is a great little fixed blade knife that fits in a deep pants pocket and has a multitude of carry options.

I run a Spyderco P'Kal in my right side pocket and a small fixed blade left of center line.
The fixed blade varies among my ClinchPick [hands down the best small defensive fixed blade...but relatively expensive and hard to get], a Ka-Bar TDI in an Infight Access Kydex sheath [available, inexpensive and very servicable] or an old Cold Steel Safe Keeper III also in an IAK sheath [while the SK III isn't made anymore, the Safe Maker II is currently in production and is close enough for gov't work.:D]
This is my daily HALO III. I carry it in a single 1911 pouch from Bladetech that I heated up and form fitted to it. Carried handle up it's very fast from the belt.

I like a knife with a little belly on the blade with some weight carried forward and the point of the blade in line with the center axis of the blade and handle. here's my EDC, a CRKT M18
http://www.midwestgunexchange.com/pictures/CRKM1814K_F.JPG
I never understood the infatuation with the americanized tanto, except for the bad-ass looks, it's possibly the most useless blade design for EDC.
I got one of the first edition Benchmade version of the Emerson CQC7 with the G10 scales and ATS 34 blade. it looked bad-ass and was tough as a crow-bar but not very practical.
so I reprofiled the blade to smooth out the tanto edge similar to the AFO which I consider to be almost perfect. it has a nice radius on the forward cutting edge while carrying enough of the blade thickness through the body to the point. it it now my choice for a hard use folder (if there is such a thing...)

Emerson Mini-Commander. I love the build quality. I love the size, feel, and balance. I don't love the edge. If you don't have the right stone and need to get it sharp, good luck. If not, you improvise with whatever stone you got, then spend alot of time trying to rehab that chisel edge later.

That is, hands down, the best and most utilitarian all-around EDC knife I know of. The low cost, the blade shape, the thumb hole instead of stud, and the Axis lock make it the best IMHO.
The one thing I'd like to see them do is produce the identical knife with a G10 type handle so that it would be a little thinner. It would cost a little more, but it would be a little easier to carry.

just a note to you griptillian owners, I snapped the tip off of my blade prying on something and it was bugging me so I asked my local guy what to do. He said send it into Benchmade with a note that you want the blade replaced and not reshaped.
I did that, they called right away to be sure that's what I wanted and it was 35 dollars including shipping (payed by cc over the phone)
Aparantly they will just sharpen it back to a point for you and that is cheaper (I meant to ask how much just for info purposes but forgot) My local guy said he's seen a bunch like that so I though i would pass it on to folks who didn't know.

Rob,
I agree, although I am more impressed by the Ritter Griptilian with the S30V. I, like you, thought it would be too much to carry, but after trying, I was hooked. The thing is so light, you just forget about it. There is a guy who sells his stuff on Moore Cutlery and he has G-10 grip kits for the Griptilian. I bought an orange one, although it was expensive, it really changed the knife. I am not sure yet if it was worth it.
I have bought many other knives thinking I would find one better, but I just keep coming back to the Griptilians.

Truthfully, my EDC knives are a small SAK Classic and an Opinel N0.8. The SAK gets used the most and the Opinel carbon blade is literally razor sharp and holds an edge extremely well -- especially when you consider it only cost $8. Sentry Solutions Marine cloth keeps the rust to a minimum and mostly I just get the usual dark stains and the occasional tiny, straight down into the steel pits.Over Thanksgiving, I was at my sisters place and they have junk kitchen knives. I could not get a good enough edge on any of her knives to carve a ham. I finally pulled out my Opinel, wiped it off and cut up the entire ham (big crowd). It still shaved when I was done, though cutting up a whole ham is hardly a test of a good blade -- but then again, I hardly consider an $8 blade to be "good", but it surely is!
On those forays where I need something heavier duty, it's a toss up between a Lone Wolf Harsey T1, Chris Reeve large Sebenza or Benchmade 905 with M2 tool steel. Of late, I find myself favoring the Lone Wolf the most and it will probably become my overall favorite. Unfortunately, Lone Wolf is ceasing production of these fine knives.

That would have cost you $0. I broke the tip off my AFCK (which is my EDC). The AFCK had already been discontinued when I busted the tip off. $0 to reshape and resharpen as part of their life sharp guarantee.

Ideally I will get another full-size 551 to carry in my left pocket but the mini does come in and hand would probably see more time in my truck or in one of my bags. I also need to get a really good belt knife to have at a more center access point but haven’t really looked. I have also been contemplating picking up a RAT 3 to wear time to time.

My buddy broke the tip off my grip at work, pics on page 1. I had pried out 3 marker lights with no prob, I let him borrow it, broke the tip and still didnt get the light out. I wasnt happy, but the knife had some age on it anyway. I thought I was gonna buy another, but never did. I finally broke out the grinder and reshaped the blade so it would have a sharp point. Still gets the job done. Only thing it needs is some loctite on the clip screws.
Whenever I get another knife it will most definitely be a Benchmade with Axis lock. That is the quickest most simple lock a lefty handed man could ask for.

I carry two boker magnum auto's on my person everyday. One has a tanto blade with a 40/60 serration, and the other is just a straight blade. I picked them up on flea bay fairly cheap, and I beat the tar out of them. I keep a gerber in my bag for more detailed work. Whoever asked about the Infidel. It is a sweet piece. It may take a little honing out of the package, but it is a good to go piece of gear.
I carry the Benchmade 530. Super light, and has Axis-lock which is great. Whenever I lend it to someone they're always shocked at how light the knife is.

I carried an satin finished Emerson Commander that I de-waved for the last 4 or 5 years, but I always hated the liner lock, I wanted a frame lock. Sebenzas and Striders were nice but pricey, the ZT301 was cool but I hate assisted openers, and the Skirmish was too much like my Commander.
I found a Emerson CQC7 without the wave for just over a hundred bucks. I sent it to Phil aka Ferrrk on USN and had him do a frame lock conversion and replace the black G-10 with blaze orange G-10 with a matching spacer. For less then a Sebenza I got what I wanted, although it will probably go to Arkansas to see the grind monkey (Tom Krein), for a regrind.
Here are the pics I just snapped at my desk here at work.

I have a brand new Benchmade mini Griptillian. Very light, very sharp. So far I like it.

I've been carrying this Benchmade literally every day for about 12 years or so. Once or twice a year I clean out the dust and tighten it up.

It's lightweight, flat, easy to carry, holds a very nice edge, and has cut, hacked or sawn open thousands of things over the years. I got it on sale somewhere, and it's probably the best $35 I ever spent. :)

I have/carry the same. Great little knife.
Since most are doing a show and tell, this is the one that I've been EDC'ing for the past two (2) years now.

That is, hands down, the best and most utilitarian all-around EDC knife I know of. The low cost, the blade shape, the thumb hole instead of stud, and the Axis lock make it the best IMHO.
Rob, what makes you say that about the blade shape? I've been considering the 553 for the tanto profile but was just curious as to what you've experienced with that profile to say this.
And Fringe, dude...I hate you, well more-so my wallet hates you with a passion lol. I've liked the Grips, but always hated the handles. And now you show me some G10 handled Grips?! *sigh*
My EDC - just a WalMart special Gerber Para-Frame that couldn't cut butter anymore.

I have been carrying this knife, a Micro Tech UDT, at work for twelve years and it has been a good one. I had to send it back a couple of years ago to have the spring replaced in it other than that it has served it's purpose. It got most of it's use during my criminal interdiction and K9 handler years. It has been a good one as I have misplaced it several times and it has always seemed to reappear.

I carry CRKT M16-14ZSF as my work knife. It has a nice wood-type finish that works well with my dockers and cargo's. It has been around the world with me. China, S. Korea, Japan, Mexico, and a few other places. I never had issues with it tucked into my checked luggage. In the states I work at nuclear power facility and I go thru security each day with it. No one in security questions it... but my co-workers look at me like I have 2 heads when they see it. I also have an older M16-14 in composite grey that had done a great deal of traveling with me. I like to have a substantial blade hidden in my front right pocket when trolling the alleys and back streets in poor countries. You never know whats around the next corner.

I really like these knives. Actually, the older M16-14 is easier to reach into the pocket with because it does not have the double carson flippers on the base of the blade. The double Carson Flipper digs into the pinky finger side of your hand when you rech into your pocket, but it does allow for one hand open and one hand closing of the blade. I like that part of the double flippers... but dont like the pocket pain! These blades can be flipped open as fast as an automatic and closed very quick as well. The safety on the newer knife also has the spring loaded automatic second lock, the older grey M16 has a manual secondary lock that I honestly never really activated....so the new automatic safety is safer because it ALWAYS engauges and it causes no problems closing once you spend a few moments teaching your hand how to deactivate the 2 safeties. Good quality, heavy weight blade, holds an edge, and not to expensive. I like them a lot.

An inexpensive Buck Ghost Rider I snagged while on sale for half off ($15). No spring retention, but it's a damn sturdy knife and perfect as my every-day work knife. I've [ab]used this knife harder than I've used any other I own: it's been soaked in every substance you can imagine in a restaurant, regularly breaks ice and pries frozen metal apart, took a momentary dip in the fryer (), and cuts more cardboard than paper. Nearing one year and nothing broken yet.
It won't win any snob contests, but I'll be hard pressed to find another knife that takes abuse like this. Glad I picked up two. :D
