I like the Army M4 that I use at work. I decided to build my rifle to imitate it. That's why I put Knight's RAS on it, and I am also going buy a Surefire that is the same model as the one that I use at work. Does anyone know what model of Surefire the Army puts on the M4?

If not a Millenium series, then the M3, I'd assume. Seems logical to me. Possibly the turbo, too.

Just to be clear, though...you buy yourself a light if you want one. They don't give you one. At least that's what one of my buddies tells me.

It's the Millenium series. I'm just trying to figure out if it's the M951, or M961.

Well I have the 961, and it's a dandy. Easy way to tell is if it's smooth on the bezel (951) or has a strike bezel-ish bezel (961). Only thing is, I wish my 961 was shock isolated. I suppose the "bang" of a wimpy M4 won't hurt it, though.

As far as I can tell lights are chosen at the unit level, not at the Big Army level. Some units have issued lights while others tell soldiers that if they want a light, they better supply it.

Figure out what you have (or had). Did you have a 6 volt (95x series) or a 9 volt (96x series) light? Tape switch or clicky cap? ARMS or screw mount?

There are better options though. I would take a G2 in a VTAC mount any day over a 951. Lighter, easier to set up for my shooting style and about $150 cheaper than a 951.

I have a buddy in 10th Group who's using a Surefire G2, but I don't know what mount he's using...

I don't think there's a "standard" per se, but if it's standard issue in the big Army, you probably don't want it anyway.

Honestly, anything SureFire makes is the shit.

Many of the lights that I have seen coming from the supply system (NSN items) were 951's. However, one need only look around in the DFAC and you will see a wide variety of lights, grips, acces., etc...

Please tell me soldiers aren't using their tac gear for mood lighting at the chow hall...

You've got me imagining a LaRue Spork.

When we journeyed across the pond, the folks at RFI were handing out the 951 lights with twin thumb screws and the flip-up IR cover.

As there were not enough for everyone, it was not the only light in use.

Some units, particularly Special Ops, get the Millienium M900 series. I have one on mine and it is the best pressure activated vert mount tactical & LED light combination available, but probably not worth the price based on what I have seen some guys put together on their M4's . . . which is why most soldiers aren't issued The M900 series.

Ive seen both Surefire and Pentagon lights in Iraq, the pentagons (MD2) were issued to either an MP unit or STB going through the same course we went through in Udari prior to moving north; surefires I have seen just about everything they make mounted one way or another.

You're good to go on the 961. I had one and it's bullet proof.

This is exactly what I had, and how I received it in the 101st ABN.

This light is crap!!!

I got it with the new SOPMOD II. It doesn't even compare in quality to any of my Surefires. I just leave it in the box and use a real light. We are running M951 or M900A. Both are great and have their own purpose.

The G2 option is ok, it just feels wierd using a light that is cheeper than the mount it is in
