I am going to be attending first carbine course in approx 3wks. One thing I
realize I've been neglecting is a holster for my pistol. I have an IWB Galco holster for CCW that I use, but I know thats not suitable for a carbine course.
After reading some posts I see that alot of folks use Safarilands 6004 tactical
holsters for these classes. So my questions are, Must one use a tactical thigh holster for these
classes? Does anyone here use a belt or paddle holster? Should said holster
have retention strap? Or open top?
I didn't care for the one cheap thigh holster I tried once, the straps that go around the inner thighs would always get loose when moving any distance
and droop down:mad: . This is why I don't think I care for them. Is this common? I plan on using an Eagle SKD universal chest rig if that matters.
Pistol will be a Springfield XD45 , I was going to use my Colt Commander, but decided to use my everyday carry gun.
Any suggestions would be appreciated?

It's really going to depend on how much transition stuff the instructor wants to hit. You can probably get by with a basic belt holster of decent manufacturor.

As long as you can reholster your weapon easily with one hand, you should be good to go.

I use belt holsters, I own a few 6004's, but they never come out to play. Blade-Tech is my choice for holsters, I like Comp-Tac also. If I used a drop leg in my job then yes I would use one at a class.

The tactical holster like a 6004 is certainly not required. A good quality belt kydex belt holster, on a good quality belt, is not only a viable choice but many would say a preferred choice. The purpose of the drop leg is to get the pistol below body armor or other gear that might be interferring with your draw stroke. If your chest rig doesn't block you from being able to draw a pistol from a belt holster, it'd be a great choice. Also, having your pistol and spare mags in a similar location to your every day carry setup will be more natural.

I'd recommend Comp-tac for the holster, they're good quality and usually have very fast delivery.

I have a Comp-tac IWB holster for my Commander. I guess I'll check out
their OWB belt offerings. Whatever I get I'll make sure it clears the chest rig.
Thanks again guys.
