View Full Version : S&W rifle internals question
I had occasion to disassemble a S&W MP15T today and was surprised to see who made it's internals. It had a Colt hammer and disconnector with a trigger marked with a letter S. Does this indicate Stag?
I couldn't tell anything about the trigger spring, but the hammer spring was coated yellow. Any idea what manufacture this might indicate?
In researching for my newest aquisition I read on the ERRORNET in several places where S&W and Stag are supposedly in kahoots with each other.
I ordered a Noveske N4 which I am still waiting for, but believe the wait will be worth it.

Stag made the first M&P15s, this isn't the case now. S&W currently doesn't use Stag Arms for anything.
I'm aware that Stag made the original S&W rifles, which is one reason I was suprised to find Colt parts in there. Most of my experience is with Colt and this is the first S&W I've disassembled, so now I'm wondering if this means Stag or S&W routinely uses (used?) Colt parts in their rifles.
I also saw that the disconnector in this rifle was finished differently than other Colt stamped one's I've seen. It was so smooth on the sides that it almost looked polished, without the fairly rough surfaces these normally have.
This S&W rifle had a black extractor spring insert and an MP'ed bolt, but the marking appeared slightly different than those on Colt rifles I've seen. Anyone know whose bolt S&W uses?
Still wondering about that yellow coated hammer spring. Could this be a JP Enterprises reduced power spring in a S&W?
I believe the S&W uses a LMT BCG.

They did use LMT for a while but switched. What they now use is still a great Tier 1 BCG.

Yes they switched again.
CMT triggers and hammers have "S" stampings on them. We also see Colt using these parts as well.
Yellow springs in the trigger group make believe that someone changes out the factory ones.

Colt doesn't make their own hammers, disconnectors......S&W uses the same hammers, and disconnectors that Colt uses. I don't know who put the JP springs in the gun but that isn't a standard feature w/S&W. S&W like almost ALL other AR manufacturers doesn't make much in house.

Check the bolt. Does it have two letters stamped into it followed by "MP?" If so, it is an LMT BCG.
S&W makes the barrels in house along with lower receivers (I believe). This is FAR more than what many so called "manufacturers" make. In fact, the last time I checked, Colt only makes 7 items in house. ;)

S&W uses what ever they can get their hands on for parts. They use a number of venders for their parts. The only thing S&W makes is the barrel for the Mass. compliant gun because Thompson in NH is owned by S&W.
The guns will very component wise from gun to gun run. CMT is still a vender.

FWIW S&W puts one HELL of a hammer spring in the 5.45mm uppers. I saw Littlelebowskis S&W today. That hammer spring is AT LEAST 25% stronger than stock, it had orange paint on it. I believe the disconnector spring is also different than stock too and my age is showing I think it had red paint on it.
This thread got me looking into my M&P15T today - where on the bolt exactly would the "MP" stamp be? Unless I'm missing it, my entire bolt and carrier don't have any letters or numbers whatsoever on it :confused:
Also, I added JP tactical springs, but my factory ones were uncolored. Is there any site to see what parts are in it depending on S/N?

I believe so as well due to the harder primer on steel cased ammo.

Last I checked, Bushmaster was still owned by Cerberus Capital Management.

I just checked mine, with the bolt in the extended position in the carrier, the MP is at the left top.
