View Full Version : What brand Uppers can I use??
I have a Stag Arms Model 1 complete rifle. I want to get a different caliber upper for it(.204 ruger), what brand uppers will interchange with my Stag lower??
I'm not an expert on the large-bore ARs, but isn't the .204 more .308 sized? If so it's not going to work on your standard Stag lower.
Look into the 6.8 SPC and 6.5 grendel loads as they are larger-bore but work on the 5.56/.223 lowers.

yeah, it should work fine.
the LMT MRP is availible in .204 Ruger, so any .223/5.56 lower should be able to work for a .204 upper
i think DPMS also makes an upper in .204, if you don't want to drop all the dough on a monolithic rail platform.

The .204 Ruger will fit in standard AR-15 sized rifles. As for which upper to buy I can't say, but they should all fit on your lower without any problems.
It will fit fine, 204 Ruger is 20 cal/5MM which is small bore. I have a 204 Ruger upper on Stag/CMT lower. What are your plans in regards to uses, and you'll really appreciate the 204 the most if you hand load. Check out WOA JP-Enterprises and Rainier Arms if your planning on building your own upper.
What is the attraction to the .204? Is there some specific use for this caliber?

Super flat shooting and absolutely fabulous red mist and splatter factors.
Praire dogs at long ranges(300yds and below). My 16" .223 barrel falls a little short out to those ranges compared to the ballistics of the .204.IMHO. I had a 204 in a bolt action that was very effective long range shooter. I sold it like a dummy and figured I would once again use that caliber on an AR platform since I had such good luck with it before.Besides, we are kind of limited on the .22 cal. offerings in the AR.
What is the rule of thumb on whether a certain caliber upper will fit a lower??

if it takes the standard AR15 mag you're good to go.
6.5, 6.8, 458 socom, 50 bushmaster, 50 beowulf, 22LR, 9mm, 45 ACP all go fine in a regular AR15 lower. i believe the 204 will fit too.
308, 270 etc require an AR10 style lower. longer cartridge, longer magwell.

Skyugo,
Thanks for the info. That makes sense and, clears up the questions I had. Another thing I learned about these guns. These AR 15's are pretty straight forward.

You're thinking of the .260 Remington, .260 is bigger like a .243 or .308.
The .204 is a very fast flat shooting cartridge. And because of it's very high velocity (some over 4K fps) it will suffer from throat erosion very quickly like the .220 Swift.
