View Full Version : I was told I can't have a .308 AR-15

When I bought my first upper (CMMG), the dealer along some people at MidwayUSA told me I CANNOT put a .308 upper on an AR-15 lower. If I want to shoot .308, I have to either by an AR-10 or an LR-308 from DPMS.

Fastforward to today, I bought a second CMMG lower from another dealer. After a brief conversation about different possibilities for the AR-15, he told me I could put whatever upper on it I wanted to. When I told him what they other dealer told me he said, "B.S. you can put a .50 on that thing. The only thing the lower does is hold the trigger group."

Another customer chimed in and completely agreed that I can put any upper I want on it.

Who is right, I really want my new one to be a .308, but I was prepared for it to only be a .223.?

a 308 cartridge won't even fit in the magwell of a standard ar15 lower. period

The Dimention of .308 upper and lower are completely different than .223 upper and lower. There is no way you can mixed it up.

The previous posters are correct.

You should browse the "Beyond 5.56/.223" section of the forums.

90% of the gun conversations that take place within gun stores are complete bullshit; most of which was generated from the pure crap they read in the gun magazines.

If you put your AR-15 next to an AR-10, you will get the picture. If you do decide attempt putting an AR-10 upper on your AR-15 lower...don't do it in public.

You need a .308 lower if you want to use the magazine well on the lower. It is true that you can get a .50 BMG upper, because they don't use the mag well of the AR15 lower, they are single shot or a side loading magazine directly into the upper.

I suppose it's possible that somebody makes a single shot or side loading .308 upper for an AR15 lower, but I have never seen one.

Buy a Noveske lower and an AR-10 Upper. Sell your 5.56mm lower or make another 223 out of it.

Okay forgive my ignorance, my experience is law enforcement and with that all I deal with is .40, .223 and 12 ga.,.... but isn't 7.62 a .308?

Based on the advice I got and where the future is going, I am going to buy a DPMS LR-308 lower and keep the AR lower I just bought.

Thanks guys

Photo of a 5.56(.223)right 7.62x51(.308)left 6.5 center.

5.56 fits inside mag well of a standard AR15(M16) .308 is to long to feed from a mag(in a standard AR15 M16 receiver).
Hope this helps.

Was the gun store worker a chick? They often lie about length not mattering, when we all know it is length and diameter that gets the job done.

Thanks. It's nice to actually have a response to a question from people who actually want to share information, instead of guard it like trade secrets. All the while trying to launch as many insults they can think of.

I am trying to find a dealer here in CA that will order a Noveske or a DPMS lower.

BTW. While I was searching for prices, I found a "Arma-lite" .308 lower for $150!!! Seems a little weird that it was being sold by a place that also sold Airsoft...F-ing communists-they will violate every patent and copyright they come across.

Was it indeed Airsoft? It's not uncommon for Airsoft companies to license names and branding, in order to make the "weapon" more realistic.

Hallboss,
I don't think anyone was trying to insult you, but the guys that gave you the false information are complete idiots. There are no secrets around here unless there is a deal on something new and or rare, then all bets are off.

Three SHOT Shows back Armalite made deal with Classic Army Airsoft company to make M-4s with the legit Armalite markings on the lower -- BEWARE! These are not GUN parts.

Never said anyone was...I was referring to other forums....
I am a senior member at a jeep site where most of the senior members are just plain assholes that think their you know what doesn't stink. Everytime someone askes a question that has been answered a thousand times without searching, or they post a question in the wrong section, such as I did with this thread, they take that opportunity to jump on the newbie and hold nothing back.

With my comment, I was simply addressing that it was nice to not get talked down to when asking a what appears to be a "stupid" question. I try to remember that common knowledge to me and may appear to be a stupid question, is "hard to find information" to someone else.

After some enlightening research based on the info I was given here, I found that the gun dealers might have been referring to a 7.62x39 upper. Not saying that is what it was, but it is possible that they just used the wrong terminology. But then again, they did tell me I can put anything I want on the lower.

Anyway, I was not referring to anyone here when I spoke earlier and thanks again for the info. You guys are a great as the "Saiga-12" guys.

I really don't know, it was just advertised as .308 Arma-Lite lower.
