View Full Version : Ammo at a fair price
For those of you that don't mind shooting 223-Rem ammo or shopping at WalMart. My local WalMart has Value Pack Federal 100 count boxes for 39.97 a box. I have been there once each week for the last three weeks and they always had 3 or 4 more boxes even after I relieved them of 2 boxes each trip. It is 55gn FMJ and shoots great through a my Stag 1/9 factory barrel, not so much through my 1/7 . The primers appear to have a blue colored sealant on them but I forgot to check and see if they are crimped. I did noticed the projectiles had a cannelure.

Good looking out, and thanks. Always a Walmart near someone.
That said, scary that $.40 per round of .223 is a bargain these days (even with cannelure, sealed primers and possible crimping). Now I can surely be at ease in hoarding all my 5.56. I clearly remember feeling guilty buying lots (and lots) of boxed IMI M855 at $0.29 per round and M193 at maybe $0.18 per a few years ago. The boxed IMI was selling on gunbroker at $1.00 per round even before Obama was elected.
I am sure most here can say the same in one way or another.

I have some of this stuff. If I though someone would actually give me a $1 a round I'm going to have to start thinking about selling it.
I see one guy has "ARMOR PIERCING" M855 over at gunbroker.

I assure you it is true.
The Firequest and Delta Force catalogs I somehow always get sell an unknown brand of SS-109 (M855) labeled as "Armor Penetrating .223" for $14.99 for ten rounds and $99.99 for 100. Imagine, up to $1.50 for a round of M855 of unknown origin.
I'm just glad to be able to reload for what ever strikes my fancy. The cost of the tooling has long since been recouped, so my cost per round is typically around 25cents/round. Even less if one is a brass-rat!
That Wally price is horrible. With tax, it's over $8 per box of economy .223 ammo.
I was selling guys some of my XM193 stash locally for $7 per box.
I did buy one of these however just to check out the ammo since I hadn't seen the package before. It is FC brass with a crimp. I haven't shot any of it, but the Crimped FC brass is good for reloading... unlike the old FC brass.

Ahhhhh yes not tax here in the Live Free Or Die. But i have shot the Wally stuff i have ben back every day this week and its all gone.:(
markm, where are you getting brass cased ammo for less than $0.40 per round?

Well the last stuff I bought was right at 0.40 per round. But it was M193, you know?
But I guess right now with all the irrational buying, $0.40 per round of practice ammo might be the fair market price.
WOLF! As long as you have a proper 5.56 camber in your weapon this stuff works great. And at today’s current ammo prices you could place the extractor with every case of ammo that you buy and still come out ahead. Just don’t get that lacquered crap and you’ll be fine.

OK where are you and I want 20 boxes please?
If that is a horrible price your either named Hornady or your living a blessed life.
Walk into any of the local gun shops around here(Tampa FL) and their either out of all 223-REM / 5.56 or they are charging $12.99 (and up) per box of twenty. Like I said, thats is a fair price.

If you were able to meet in person, I'd sell you 25 boxes.
Like I said. I saw that "value" pack at wally and bought one just to check out the ammo. I certainly didn't feel like it was a fair price.
All I'm saying is for the same price, you can get XM193.
