I'm trying to figure out which AR to buy. I really like the LMT MRP because of the quick change nature of the barrels. I'd purchase the weapon in 5.56 with the intent of adding 6.8 in the future. This leads me to the 6.8 barrel from LMT. Does it have the enhanced chamber like Cardinal's (allowing for 130 gr rounds)? If not, it must be better to just purchase a complete upper from Cardinal, right? Then, the MRP isn't as appealing as it once was unless I'm interested in various length barrels.

Your expertise would be helpful.

I'm not a 6.8 expert but I'm pretty sure Cardinal/Ko-Tonics is going out of business so that might simplify your choice a little.

This is correct.

Noveske is coming out better 6.8 barrels soon.

Wow. Well, that certainly makes things easier. Was Cardinal the only company making the 1/11 twist for 6.8? I see that LMT barrels are 1/10. From what I've read, the 1/11 allow for heavier round stabilization which would be great for hunting purposes.

You owe it to yourself to visit 68forums. Constructor, owner/builder at ar15performance, will be releasing an "Xtreme combat upper" in Q1 '09. Tapered contour, chrome lined, all the best current specs for 6.8. It will even be competitively priced.

This is correct.

Noveske is moving to SPCII chambered, 1:12 twist poly rifled barrels for 6.8. These will be stainless steel, available in 12.5", 16.1", and 18" lengths, coming out right around the beginning of 2009.

WOA will sell you an SPCII chambered 1:11 twist barrel today. These are a great buy if you want to build a 6.8 right now.

Finally, if you want a less expensive alternative, Stag Arms is switching to SPCII 1:11 twist barrels some time early next year.

If you wait just a couple of months, your 6.8 choices will open up dramatically and you will be able to shoot hot handloads and SSA's combat loadings.

Stay away from the MRP until LMT gets a clue and starts offering 6.8 barrels with an SPCII or DMR chamber and 1:11 twist rifling.
