View Full Version : Is there anything wrong with this picture?
Just fired about 40 round this am (first time)- took it apart to lube it and I found these marking on the feedramps. I posted this in another forum and I got mixed results so I thought I would try here too. Used PMC bronze bullets. I didnt lube it prior to firing since I thought it came lubed from the factory. not sure if that could of caused it. some people said it was "mismatched" So I dont know if I need to call SW...

No this is just a matter of the copper on the bullet being softer than the steel of the ramp, so a bit of the jacket transfers over. Every gun I have ever had shows this to some extent or another.

Not a flaw. In the future(albeit unrelated to the copper on your feed ramps,) lube the damn gun.;)

Completely normal for all semi-auto firearms...even handguns. Copper streaks from the jacket of the bullet will always rub off a bit on the feed ramps as you fire.
Looks like the extension has a matt finish so i could see deposits being left. It also looks like the fit between the upper ramps and barrel extension aren't matched well.
What kinda of upper and barrel is that?
Its a smith and Wesson MP-15x. I'm not sure who makes the barrel.

the picture is perfectly normal.
i agree with the previous poster. lube your upper and lube it generously. don't lube the feed ramps tho :p one should always strip, inspect, clean and lube a new gun.
here's how i lube:
a drop of CLP inside the carrier key.
generous lube on the outside of the carrier (paying attention to the sides of the gas key and "rails" on the sides), the inside of the carrier, the cam pin, the bolt & locking lugs. light lube all over the inside of the upper and CH (i use motor oil for this, because its heavier than CLP).
GTG.
add CLP as needed into the holes in the carrier through the ejection port.
as rough as that extension looks, i'd say filling in the pores with copper isn't a bad thing.

When I saw the picture, the first thing I thought was that it was mismatched ramps. It might just be that picture, but it doesn't look good.

Is this something I should take to a gunsmith to confirm?
I'd speak with s&w first and send them these pics and maybe some more. I'm not an expert but from the pics you posted i'm not impressed with the fit.
The only other smith ar part i've handled was a lower and i have the same feelings about it's quality.

Maybe, depending on their response.
I'd try to find a dealer that is very familiar with AR-15's, ask if they do much smith work on them. If they give you a lukewarm "meh" answer, walk away. If they give you a sincere confident affirmative, then I might consider going to the next step of asking how much to mate/smooth out some feed ramps. I wouldn't think it would be too much, probably as much in shipping to return it to the manufacturer.
But then again, if it ain't broke...
I emailed SW - I hope that I will get a response. Afterall the rifle is brand new so I figure it must be covered by their warranty. I hope they can direct me a an authorized dealer who do the gunsmithing. Only having fired 40 rounds there didnt seem to be a problem with it but somehow I think they should cover smithing it and the shipping.

The marks are unrelated to what these guys are talking about. You're going to see copper smeared there even if the fit between the barrel extension and and upper receiver was perfect. You'll see brass smudges and shavings here and there too...all part of the game.
S&W may or may not think it's an issue, but if it is, you won't be sending the gun off locally...it'll go all the way back to S&W.
