Thanks for the condolences. It's been nearly 3 months and I'm still broken up over it. :(
Also really sorry to hear of the pit bull attack. I've had one or two close calls myself with loose, out-of-control dogs (although not pits). One time got within a second or two of resorting to deadly force. The owner finally managed to excercise restraint just in time.
Albert is really making me want to get another kitty. I've had 3 over the past 30 years, along with 4 dogs. Right now though there is not a single critter in the house. Feels reeeeely empty......
This thread is helping a lot though.
Albert is a great cat.
Sadly this weekend our other cat (Sebastian) passed away Saturday night. He had liver cancer, he was 16.5yrs old. He was a great cat.
RIP Sebastian 1993-2009 you will be missed and you will always be in our hearts.

Nice GSD from one GSD owner to another!
Speaking from experience, socialize the heck out of her. Otherwise she will probably end up biting someone.
Thanks. We have. She loves kids, and can work and play with other dogs. She has issues with small white dogs, though. I don't know if we can eliminate that. She'll hold a command well enough, but left to her own devices she'd probably eat one.
i have a 220lb english mastiff named Huckleberry. Also a 90 lb german shepherd dog named Nina.

Well to tell the whole story behind the look,
A few years back a neighborhood feral Dog which weighed about 100lbs pushed by me from behind and into my home just as I was walking inside and closing the front door, (I never saw the dog coming). Sandy spotted the dog and without hesitation went right after the mutt which has been known for past attacks which injured other smaller dogs and cats in the area. The brawl (Round One) looked like a MMA fight and as I tried to persuade the dog to retire he turned and snapped at me. As I did not want to touch off a round inside the house with the kids moving up the stairs to are safe room I ended up using a Two Handed Heavy Machete I keep by the front door. During the round Sandy managed to land a good right hook at some point blinding the dog in one eye and I have to say I have "NEVER" seen a in-door house cat move as fast as she did, without fear or reserve, she just would not disengage so I could have a clean whack at the dog. The Photo was taken about five minutes after everything happened and I was documenting the event just encase some mystery owner shown up looking for Coojoe. The dog tested Negative for Rabies and Distemper so I have no clue why the dog charged into the house as Sandy was not in view and no food was being eaten. So in recognition of her bravery that went above and beyond the normal call of duties for a common lap cat she has earned a place of honor as a home defender. (At least for Dogs and the occasional Bug.)

I post one picture of Jack, and no one posts again for days. Now that's what I call intimidation. That's what I'm talkin' about, Jack!
We were intimidated by your gun toting psycho cat with the crazy eyes.
You want intimidation. I rescued an 8 Week old kitten the other day. Jackass neighbor's dogs got the mother and the rest of the litter didn't make it through a cold snap. This little thing is 8 weeks old or so, about 2 ounds, and scares the hell out of me.
Even though I had been feeding them daily, this one seems to have gone semi-feral. I am working on taming it but the little lady actually got through a welders glove when I was trying to handle her!

Just picked up our 15 lb, 8 month old ankle biter from doggy daycare. When she walked into the living room she went nuts barking at everything that the contractor repairing a flooded ceiling had moved. She would not stop until my wife moved her toy box and the sofas back. She then went thru the house to make sure everything else was ok.
She barks at anything that is not where she thinks it belongs, don't leave your shoes anywhere but under the bed! She is a great guard dog, but no match for the coyotes in the park behind our condo.
Awwww!
I love little dogs.
Be careful - one of my good friends had his dog ripped up pretty badly by yotes in his back yard a couple of months ago, and he lives in a la-di-da 'burb of Chicago. Cost him close to 6k to get her put back together again.

These two were mine. A Dane and a Pit/mastiff. I had to give up the Pit/mastiff when I left PA. The Dane had a St.Bernard to keep her company for a while & it was with those two in the house that I met my wife and her cat Twilight . . . who I hung a rank and a last name on mostly to harass my wife. The Bernard passed away (he wasn't a pup) and the Dane went to live with my folks when we had to leave the house for the condo. Condo association won't let me have a dog-sized dog . . .. I can't wait to get out of here.

Dakota: she is a pound Puppy and pretty protective of us all. She is husky and sheppard or coyote mix of some kind.

This is Teddy. He is the alpha of the pack and the most protective of us.
He is half Siberian Husky and Half chow. His parents were full blooded respectively.

This is stryker and his kitten. This kitten was a V-Day gift for the wife, Stryker here decided it was his cat. As you can see he is not very aggressive and a big softie. funny thing is, that visiters are more scared of him than my other two. As you can see he is a pure bred Siberian Husky.

If you are curious enough to spend a little bit, there are dog lineage kits out there for around 50 dollars that will trace the DNA to see what breeds they are made of.

For what it's worth, we know a couple who adopted a dog that was part GSD and something else. They spent the money on a DNA test and the results were - part GSD and something else. So money well spent, then.

The new pound puppy Ruger. Scottish Terrier for the most part I believe. This guy was sitting on death row at the pound at about 4 months old. No one knew how he got there or why no one had taken him yet. Apparently there is a nasty outbreak of canine flu running around Colorado shelters and he was near death two weeks after we took him home. So my $80 adoption fee ended up costing more like $2,000 after all the DNA tests and a week of high-risk ICU boarding.

I know the feeling. My own free dog turned into a $2400 dog due to a large dog vs small dog rasslin' incident. Had to get 3 pins put in his leg to stabilize a growth plate.
He has since been briefed that immediately after any other such injuries, he needs to shit some Tiffany cufflinks IOT defray costs. Else, his "surgery" will cost about $.32 and require NO recovery time. He appeared suitably chastised.

My Standard Schnauzer, Kyo, at 1 year old. He's just over 1.5 years old now and about 50 lbs. He's well trained and a great dog. Always at the ready. I just added a female Schnauzer, Moxie, to the family. She's only 9 weeks old and already ruling the roost. She'll max out around 40 lbs.

Is that a Malinois? Good looking puppy.
Taking a new approach to condo security - our old guard cat passed away fairly recently and the hunt for a replacement yeilded a pair:

More bad luck than anybody wants to mess with! These two are sons of sisters & came off the same goat farm.
Is that a Malinois? Good looking puppy.
Thanks. He's a Dutch Shepherd from Vandalia Kennel. (http://www.vandaliakennel.com/) I've heard them described as having the drive of the Belgian Malinois with the sense of a GSD. I believe they're actually judged on the same criteria as Belgians but just different colors. Pretty rare in the US, they're not even AKC recognized. He's a better chick magnet than any car, clothes or cologne I've ever had.
This is Sophie, a 2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. She was my college graduation present to myself. :D A breeder in Social Circle GA was asked to assist police in rounding up some pits from a fighting ring. When he arrived he found several of his dogs that people had been fighting. Instead of having more of his dogs end up in that situation he gave the litter he just had to a shelter and got out of the business. That's how I ended up with an $850 APBT (already spayed with shots) for a $100 adoption fee).

very nice pitbull! What the hell is the cat doing to him LoL!!! looks like she's biting the shit out of him! funny though!!!
The boxer pictures are killing me! I'll put up another one of my TJ. She's such an instigator, she'll headbutt the dobe until he gets up to play then just quits playing after he's all jacked up and going crazy. She will also bark at the window then sit down and laugh as the dobe goes crazy trying to figure out where the badguy is that he didn't see. This is her innocent look-don't fall for it:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn2/jjhhuurrtt/DSC_0030.jpg
Yesterday I had a bit of an unsavory character parked in front of my house, standing by is car and blasting his idiotic ghetto music about drugs and shooting people. Snoopy (the dobe) wasn't happy about this moron at all. I put him on the leash and walked outside. He gave this numbnuts his best "Maybe you parked in the wrong spot?" look, along with a low growl:

Can I ask a stupid question? Why do people still crop their dogs ears? Even if they are a show dog, it's not a requirement anymore. Don't people realize how painful that is for the dog?

I wouldn't say it's a stupid question, although I don't really know how painful it is. Probably less then spaying/neutering anyway. Both our dogs came with cropped ears but as you can see the boxer wasn't done particularly well. They are rescues.

My fearless West Highland White Terrier, Fergus. Although he only weighs 17 pounds, he will never fight with dogs his own size when he plays with others, he only goes for the 50+ pound dogs:eek:

max is a 5 year old 110 pound akc english yellow lab and akira is a 14 month old 65 pound akc/ukc mongollian smooth coat black chow chow... love 'em both. these two are TOTAL opposites but compliment each other very well. max is your typical happy-go-lucky, dumber then a box of rocks, but loyal as a conjoined twin lab and akira is the most quiet, reserved, loving, and cuddly dog when it comes to her dad (me)... quite strange for a chow, but don't think about kicking the door in at 3 a.m., she WILL go tasmanian devil on your arse... ask max. a month or so ago, my wife left the cat food out (bad idea) and max decided to sneak a snack. well, seeing max enjoying is late night snack, akira decided she was invited to partake in the festivities, too. max had severe food protectiveness disorder (see description of cat below)... hahaha... he turned around, snipped her on the neck, and pushed the wrong button. my wife and i work up to the most horrendous sounding growling and yelping we've ever heard. upon entering the kitchen, we saw blood, fur, skin, and other whatnot everywhere. max was sheepishly licking his wounds and akira was gleefully wagging her tail and smiling up at me. can't say i blame either dog... max was always the only pet and knew only to answer to me and my wife (he has since learned to share his food) and akira was only defending herself. anyhow, i love these two.

this is fiona. she is ridiculous. she's only 5 months (this is an old pic) and on her 8th life. when fiona was about two months old, she fiercely tried to take a pig's ear from my yellow lab, max. well, max defended his tasty treat and smashed his fangs down on the little one's head. the sound i heard next, i can't even begin to describe... it sounded like something ascended from the pit of hell and was terrorizing all the little children of the world. didn't really catch everything visually, so i decided to go after the cat (under my bed at this time) and see what happened. well, it wasn't hard to find her as one would not have even had to have any blood tracking skills to follow this lovely stream of red goo across my bedroom floor. anyhow, i moved the bed and was immediately terrified (mind you, i work in emergency health care and see a lot). her eye was hanging be nerves about 3/4 an inch out of her eye socket and her head was pretty crushed (and so was my heart). so, i bagged her up and was headed outside to end her misery and just as i was about to, the wife and mother in law pulled in. great. well, i have to tell them what happened or they'd wonder why i was shooting at a plastic bag. my wife immediately shrieked, scooped the cat up, and rushed her to the emergency room where they sewed the eye back in (which later had to be removed). after 2 months of dropper feeding and about $1,100 in vet bills, i still have a cat... albeit a one eyed cat with serious sinus issues, it's a cat. fast forward to recent days, she chews on lamp cords, walks the counter and pounces on the dogs, and bats their tails and chews on their ears. needless to say, she ain't too smart. i told the wife, no more $1,100 vet bills for a cat we found in the barn, so next time she is "bitten", that's it. seems they all get along great, actually... so, we'll see. i'll have to see if i can get a recent pic up of her.

It's odd, but a good animal understands you better than any human can. You can hide things from a human, and usually pretty easily at that. I'll be damned if I try to hide something or cover something up in hope of one of these furry critters not figuring it out.

This is Cricket. He is the most ridiculous cat ever. As you can see by his ears, he is a Scottish Fold. He's a cold weather cat (toe tufts, thick double coat, short and bulky) that HATES THE COLD, but overheats in the summer because of his body type. He got the name cricket because of the noises his breed makes. He doesn't meow like most cats, he makes weird chirpy and clacky noises.

Abso-freakin'-lutely. If you know your cat and your cat knows you, she/he will let you know if something's up long before any dog I've personally seen. Maybe a trained dog can be better and more alert, but my untrained cat is better than any untrained dog I know. I'm not a 'cat guy' either; I love both my dogs and my cats.

Here's my boy Justice. This was taken in Texas at the 2009 Master National Hunt Test. About every saturday from the beginning of September to the end of January we are on a beaver pond, a lake, a river, some type of impoundment or guiding a waterfowl hunt of some type. He retrieves about 400 - 500 ducks, pheasants, dove or geese every season. In the off season we are running hunt tests or field trials.

I had (WARNING: massive understatement follows) a bit of a scare this past week.
Monday the 4th, I let my dog Archie into the back yard to enjoy some time outside on a nice day. Turns out I forgot to double-check the gate, and I came home at lunch to find it open and him gone. The other two times he's ever taken off, he makes his way back, so I'm concerned but not particularly worried. I make some notifications, talk to neighbors to keep an eye out, etc.
That changes over time. Jump forward to the next day; I come home at lunchtime in the offhand hope that he's made his way back. He had, but was in obvious pain, blood in his left eye, a distended belly and blood coming out of his ass. He's a Jack Russell, not even 20#, so that's BAD. Pretty clear he got hit by someone/something; IMMEDIATELY off to the nearest vet.
Jump forward to a few hours later, when I've found out that they could make him comfortable, but aren't equipped to deal with what they think is wrong with him. Off we go to an emergency facility in Richmond, VA. He's in very bad shape.
There is some internal bleeding, which is worrisome but not an immediate problem. Blood chemistry is all kinds of wonky, and there's some tear in the urinary tract that's dumping piss into his belly, the combination of which is keeping him too unstable for surgery. Get him catheterized and a tube in his belly to let the fluids drain.
I have to get on a bloody plane; work trip that I can't get out of. So, my boy is maybe gonna die or need to be let go, and I can't be there. I came as close to crying (injuries don't count; I've cried like a bitch for THAT....) as I have since I was in my early teens this past Wednesday afternoon, while standing in a CVS parking lot in Edinburgh, IN, because I saw somebody drive by with their dachshund in their lap with his head lolling out the window. Thought maybe my boy and I'd not have another chance to do the same.
Up to that point, $$$ was a point of worry. It stopped being such. He's the first dog I've owned since I was 18. Up to that point, I was willing to get him stabilized in the hopes he'd get better on his own or to the point that it was clear he would not. Screw that. "Doc, the surgery? Do it, as soon as you think it's prudent."
Soooo glad I did that. There was a tear in his urethra (I'm tempted to rename him Hank Hill), but it was away from the point at which it merges into the bladder, and it was longitudinal. Point being, VERY likely to hold the repair unlike a tear along the short axis), high-percentage shot of complete recovery, especially since he's a young dog (2yrs 8mos) and in excellent shape. All the other trauma is a matter of the right drugs, time, and restricted movement...which he'll hate, of course.
Trip was to be until Sunday night, but thanks to the threat of gov't shut-down, a Reserve unit's drill got canked. By the time I'm halfway home on Friday night, he's made a complete turn-around and handing out kisses to anybody that gets too close to his snout. He's still got the catheter in, so that the repair can take hold.
Saturday afternoon, the catheter's out, Archibald Henderson Santoro is ready to go home, and I'm overjoyed.
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/5566/recoveringarchie.jpg
He's is NOT a fan of the collar...or perhaps of the fact that I told him he looks like he's wearing a tutu...
A tree falls on my house, my dog comes close to dying, and having to be away while it goes on. I've got NO ammo budget, and I find that I don't really care. Been a helluva week.....
Two words I'd never thought I'd mull in my head: pet insurance.
WOW rough story glad your dog is on the side of OK and yeah pets have a way of becoming like family :)
thoughts and prayers for recovery :)

All things considered he looks great. My dog had a hernia repaired last summer and while the bill was shocking, in retrospect it was some of the best money I've ever spent. He had the same Elizabethan collar...he figured out how to defeat it pretty easily.
To a speedy recovery!
Glad to hear he's ok. My 14 y/o german shepard broke a vein in his ear last year and almost bled out, vet made me sign a DNR before surgery which upset me more than anything. It cost a lot to fix it but it was worth it. He used to be scared of guns and went bananas whenever he heard shots. Now he just rolls over onto his good ear. :D
This is him with his bandage:

vet made me sign a DNR before surgery which upset me more than anything.
Oh hell yeah, I can imagine it would.
Odd; when we were talking over things, I got told that if at any point his heart stopped, they were making efforts to bring him back. Can't go so far as to say that it's a policy on their part, but it struck me as unusual, once I had a chance to think of it....later (at the time I was all "yeah, yeah, whatever, let's GO!")
My heartfelt thanks go out to:

-the Veterinary Emergency Center in Richmond
...for taking such good care of my little PITA. The staff at White Oak all had cases of the sniffles when they handed Archie over to me so I could drive him to Richmond. I'm getting a bit verklemmt just thinking about that,...
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/8319/verklemmt.jpg
... so I have a hard time imagining how they manage to keep it together as well as they do, as I'm sure they see stuff like that pretty frequently.

I'm very glad to hear that Archie is well on the road to recovery. I hope he has a complete and speedy return to duty. I wish his tenure matches the former CMC.
I like dogs much better than a lot of people I know. I'm not sure if that's a commentary on me or dogs, or maybe people in general.
My heartfelt thanks go out to.....the Veterinary Emergency Center in Richmond......
I had to take my cat Parker there back in 2005, when he was on his last legs with a chronic lung ailment and in a really Bad Way. :cray: They are open 24/7, and it being the weekend my regular vet was closed.
The place is intense: anything can come in at any moment. It's like a M.A.S.H for animals. Most of the people working there were quite young. They must burn out quickly under such pressure.
This is my 2yr old Lab, Trouble, at a Master Hunter hunt test a couple of weeks ago.

The place in Richmond has helped me and several people I know. While the are not the cheapest game in town being open 24/7 and on Sundays does offer peace of mind.
Oh, certainly not cheap! I tapped myself pretty good, but the trip from barely conscious to being barely contained (also a Jack Russell) so that he can finish up healing and get his sutures out...I can't argue with the craftsmanship.
So I have to put off ordering from the cheerleader menu at Queerbucks for a few months....

Lol, that shit is no fun. One of my dogs has to take 4 pills a day for her allergies and became very skilled in coughing them up. I now use a mortar and pestle to grind them up. Mix the powder with what ever is on hand like milk, gravy, or crushed chips and she thinks that she is getting a treat.
Love this thread!

Ice seemed to really help the "teething" process. Not sure if it is the best or correct method, but she got to the point where she LOVED ice and would bulldoze her way through anything to get to the fridge when she heard someone getting ice.

My last dog was a 155 pound Rot. He was an escape artist. He chewed the door knob off the back door to go out and use the bathroom. I had carribiners on his cage. This guy will be too big for this cage in about a month or two. The larger cage will be much more secure.

I am doing the ice thing. I don't think anything that touches his mouth actually stops long enough to soothe. Right down the throat. He still thinks he has to eat what he can before his litter mates get it all. I am working on that.

Stick those nylabones in the freezer.
Here's our new addition. His Sire was last years National Amateur Field Champion and the Mother has her Master Hunter Title. Chase, my pups name, is only 7 1/2 weeks old in this pic. I picked him up a week ago yesterday.

Sad face as she tries to figure out why she has to "stay" while the 4 other dogs with us play

Nice. He looks like a winner.

You've got a nice looking girl also!!
Chase is my 3rd Lab. My first lab is 8yrs old now. My 2nd was 2 1/2yrs old and I had to put him down the beginning of Jan. He had a cancerous tumor located on his hip right at the joint. The Vet couldn't guarantee that they could get all of the tumor and he would need to do chemo also. His right hip joint was also degenerating so I couldn't see putting him through all of that.
I run Hunt Test's with my dogs. Both Justice and Trouble are/were Master Hunters. Chase is going to run hunt tests also. Can't wait to get him going.
Our GSD now at 4 months. He is going to be a big boy!

This is Justice. He's 5 in this picture. That was 3 years ago. He pretty much looks the same now except he has some grey starting under his chin.

I knew Mals could jump prior to getting Bam but I'd never really had the opportunity to have him jump other than leaping over the kid's baby gate occasionally. I took him with me to a friend's house who has an elevated back deck in her yard, approximately 6' tall. We recorded this video as a little demonstration.

Thanks! Put it on a different host. http://imageshack.us/clip/my-videos/41/s2ss.mp4/
He made that look easy!! Great looking dog by the way. If I were to get something other than a Lab it would be either a GSD or a Belgian.
