He made that look easy!! Great looking dog by the way. If I were to get something other than a Lab it would be either a GSD or a Belgian.
Thanks! The Mal is a great dog as a family pet, very playful and intelligent, and makes a great protection dog as well. However, they also need a strong Alpha and a master, not just a dog owner, and I think that's where a lot of people run into problems.
I can see that happening. Ever since I've gotten into Labs and hunting and competing with them, I've really changed my way of seeing dogs as members of the PACK. My dogs now learn pretty quickly the order of things. One of the ways I do this is by having my wife and kids help with feeding and doing OB work with the dogs. This all starts as soon as a pup comes home with us. I also let my kids train with us and handle the dogs while training. So far this works pretty well and we have not had any dominance issues within the household or even between dogs. My dogs are all intact males and I've never had a single issue so far. Knocking on wood to make sure nothing comes up in the future.

Jake is (as far as I can tell) a lab and great dane mix. Highly intelligent, serious, protective, and like all labs attention starved. He has defended this house and the family on two separate occasions and acquitted himself each time in a fantastic manner. He has a bark that will make you void your bowels, but is a at his heart a lover. He is more partial to the elderly and infirm than babies and kids. By that I mean that if one of our grandmothers were to visit, he would stay at their side. With kids he figures mom and dad are around. This is the most loyal dog I have ever had. Unfortunately he will be turning 12 in August. He now has a hard time jumping up onto the bed or getting in the truck. His snout keeps getting grayer by the day. I keep trying to not think too far into the future.
The rat, Kita, at his side was dropped into our laps in December of 2010. That is momma's dog. As often happens between a human and a dog, they are soul mates. Like my wife, she grows on you :D . Still not too hip with her but she'll do.

We're trying a new leash setup, as a result my dog has decided he will in fact MURDER me.

I'd suggest using a prong collar instead. We use a Herm Sprenger and get fantastic results with it. When we leave the house Bam gets to wear his Herm Sprenger prong collar (http://www.elitek9.com/Herm-Sprenger-Black-plated-Stainless-Steel-pinch-collar/productinfo/C128/) in subdued black. Why subdued black? For when we're out doing night ops! Duh! You can't be a ninja if you don't do night ops.
Honestly I got it in black so it would blend with his coat better and people aren't put off by the big, bright shiny prong collar thinking he's a vicious dog. Most people think prong collars are cruel or inhumane and only needed on a dog who'd attack them otherwise. Nothing could be further from the truth. All I do is get his prong out and he sits instantly, ears back, waiting excitedly but calmly to have his collar put on. When I put Bam's prong collar on he instantly changes his mindset completely and knows it's time to go to work. In this case I mean "work" by time to listen intently to commands and no screwing about, not like K-9 cop type of work although he is trained for it.
When adjusted and used properly a prong collar is a fantastic tool and especially so with bright, independent breeds. They're also called pinch collars due to the nature of how they work. They simulate a dog's corrective nip on the sensitive part of the upper neck below the jawline and do not hurt the animal. You can either clip your leash to both large rings at the back of the neck, called a dummy ring, which is a milder correction or if it's a stubborn animal only clip on to one of the larger rings, called an active ring, and this will increase the amount of correction given to the animal. With Bam I always use the 2 rings and have never had to move to the single ring, it's simply not necessary, and he listens extremely well due to his mindset changing with simply wearing the collar.
Proper fit is a must and should be worn close up under the jawline and placed above their normal flat collar. A correction is typically a quick tug and release on the prong collar and nothing more, popping the collar if you will. When used properly and with regular training the prong collar is a fantastic corrective tool.
That leash/harness setup is only for when we're practicing loose leash walking. He walks besides me rather than pulling me. We'll eventually transition off it, but it's been great so far.
I've got a pinch collar, but he's strong enough that he just pulls till he nearly chokes himself out.

You need to adjust the pinch collar and put it in the proper position below the jawline and up behind the ears rather than where his flat collar goes. Pulling in a vertical direction rather than back will get you the results you want. It should be a corrective "pop" rather than a tug of war.
If your current setup is working well than keep rocking it I just didn't want to hear about you getting viciously mauled by that cute little thing. :)

The frogs are my wifes' thing. The dog is fairly young, but since it is a Jack Russell they don't get too big.

I would love to have a Maine Coon. We have 2 inside cats and 1 outside cat plus my 2 dogs. One of our inside cats is basically a dust mop. I can take him when she's laid out on the floor and slide her across the hardwoods. She'll lay there and slide about 5-6 feet without trying to get up. So she's our dust mop.

Some kind of shepherd?
Some kind of shepherd?
He's a Belgian Malinois and they are also called Belgian Shepherds. Similar to a German Shepherd but they tend to have a higher drive and energy. Great dog but they need a firm Alpha to keep them happy and in check, not for the typical pet owner, and they need lots of exercise and mental stimulation in order for them not to get bored and destructive.
They're used in a lot of police and military roles due to their intelligence, detection capabilities, stamina and willingness to bite your face off. :)
Belgian...thought so.
It seems that the GSD, Belgian, and Dutch are all related on a fundamental level. At least I've noticed that they more or less have similar physical features.
The ears and snout of you dog are identical to my GSDs in terms of shape and dimensions...
And nice pooch. :D
Prong collars or pinch collars are not inhumane. They are actually the closest thing us humans can get to the type of correction a mother would give her pup.

Copied from my journal on MalForum. I believe I've mentioned before that I wasn't happy with the heavy handed training techniques Bam's old trainer used. Coincidentally today I ran into Sin City K9 (http://www.sincityk9.com/) today at the park and their training philosophy is the exact opposite. They were doing bite and obedience work with their Mal and my jaw was on the ground with how fast he'd respond to commands. Precision military drill team like reactions to commands and the whole time happy as can be, I was very impressed.
Bam and I wandered over when they were done working their dog and began to talk about their company. They're nationally ranked and have won numerous awards for their dogs in national competitions. I really like their approach to training and the results are amazing. If you'd like to see some examples of their work you can view their Youtube videos (http://www.youtube.com/sincityk9), great work. Anyhow, Bam and I will be working on refining his obedience training, learning some new stuff and really working on his bite work which he LOVES!!!
Getting you schooled and your dog trained is the equivalent of training with a gun. You may own it, you may take it with you everywhere but if you don't train to use it you're doing both you and your dog a disservice in my opinion.
I ran him about 8 or 9 times with this guy before I had the great idea to film it. This is the first time Bam and I have ever done bite work together, I'm obviously a novice, but he did great. He released every time on command and on this last run the guy told me not to pull him off so he could have the vest as a reward. It was hot and we'd been playing fetch for quite a while so he was a bit on the tired side.

He just showed up one November day back in 2009.

Apparently his name around the rural farm community named him Get the Fuck Outta Here.

Not sure how many years she's got left to run around our new place but she sure loves it. And the first time she spots a mule deer or an elk, she'll probably run herself to death. But she'll die happy.

Irish, thanks for the write up on the prong collar.
I use one of those on my dog, but I was not aware that I had it too low (in the traditional position).
Perhaps when I change this she will not walk forward so "eagerly". I know this is probably meant for younger dogs, but I hope my older dog won't mind it.
To be fair, I'm not the original owner. My stedpdad's kids kinda stopped giving a shit about her and my stepdad is too busy to watch her, so I kinda took over. She is MY dog now, and I like it that. I never got to grow up with a dog.

He got passed off to our replacements last year, who I'm sure take good care of him. 95% of the dogs there either sick, vicious from mistreatment, or timid and will not come near people...so the friendly ones tend to get adopted and taken care of.

Danger is an adorable little guy. The further you get from the flagpole, the better life gets. :)
I just finished reading "Outlaw Platoon" by Sean Parnell. He was a platoon commander with 10th Mountain on the Pakistan border. They had a couple of dogs they adopted, and built pens from old Hesco barriers.
The dogs were a huge morale boost for his men. Not exactly legal, but in the hinterlands you don't have as many micromanagers.

A lot of good retriever trainers/breeders out your way. Go to www.retrievertraining.net/forums and then the classified section for labs to check on breedings coming about. That forum is the main retriever forum in the country. The majority of professional trainers and lab people are on that site. Tons of great info. Basically the M4C of the retriever world.

No experience with it but one bad one without it. My dad's dog temporarily lost all of his hearing and it took him a long time to get it back after a trip to the range. He has now pretty much completely recovered but it was a scary experience. I think some dogs are better for it than others (droopy ears vs. pointy ones) but if I was going to spend any serious time at the range with a dog, I'd get them ear pro.

I'd like to take my GSD mix to the range, and am curious if you did anything special to get him slowly accustomed to the sounds?
Thanks very much, that's a hunorous photo.
He was more upset that he couldn't come right down to the firing line. I'd say he was about 50yds from the shooter, I just gave him some foamies, but he just slept for most of the day and then barked at folks to come pet him.

RancidSumo -
I had a black lab and boxer mix for 12 years. She was the sweetest dog I have ever known.
One thing to keep in mind, is that many boxer and boxer mixes can have skin allergies. If you do pick up the rescue dog, you may want to try giving cold water omega3 fish oil capsules, about 2000 milligrams a day. I found that to work well, and avoiding foods that have a lot of synthetic ingredients. My dog's skin allergies cleared up completely with Blue Buffalo dog food and fish oil. But it took us several years, and lots of cortisone.
If you do adopt, let me know, I will be happy to help via PM on the things we did for allergies. I am a huge fan of rescue dogs.
Good luck!
a0cake, I am amazed your dog and chicken got along so well. When I was a kid, one of my primary duties was keeping the dogs out of the chicken house and yard.
Yeah, it was pretty strange. The chickens actually seemed to be on the winning side of the power differential, as they'd sometimes chase the dog around.
Were you in the NE? Are you or did you work with JTACs?
I'm not a JTAC, but yes, we always had one around. Feel free to PM me with questions if you want, as long as they're on the right side of OPSEC.
Continuing the Afghan critter series, here's one that actually pulled its weight:

This dog has been amazing so far. He is very mellow for a <2 year old lab and is content with just laying around being petted. I can't wait for his stitches come out so I can take him swimming again.
He made instant friends with all my family but especially my 10 month old niece:

Thanks for the compliment, & you're right about Morgan. He's the smartest dog I've owned (and Beau is proving to be highly intelligent as well). Actually, Morgan has helped train Beau quite a bit. I've done more training, with Morgan, than I ever have with any other dog I've owned. I taught Beau to focus early. So, I'd tell Beau to focus & run Morgan through the paces on the basics. Next thing you knew, Beau had them down after watching Morgan. Beau still has puppy ADD, so he's not as polished yet, but he'll get there soon :D

Actually, I was unable to identify what the dog had in his mouth.
I simply found the picture of a dog killing another animal somewhat incongruent with the general theme of a thread dedicated to members posting photos of their pet dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens.

You did that puppy a favor.....saving from a baron shit hole known as south central wyoming...
My Mal is now a year old and I have been working with him slowly over the months. He is great with commands and for as wired as he is for a pup, he listens quite well when he wants to bite things. My buddy that helps me train him saw this video and the next day he came over with his bite suit. About 4 or 5 months ago, the dog would not go near the bit sleeve, now he hits it like a champion. I wanted to concentrate on his new verbal commands so I did not get any pictures or video of him on the bite suit but I got a pretty good one of him waiting for his bite command as long as a puppy can.....

Species identity crisis growing up with three cats. She catches things with her front legs, and will attack your feet under the blanket.
And for those that think that herding cats is impossible, she's got it down with the three we have. Caught 2 neighborhood cats too (didn't hurt them, just kind of laid on them with a "Great, now what?" look on her face).

Although I find them beautiful, I know how small cats have been known to play with their food, attack their owners for no apparent reason. So no I would not want a killer roaming my home just waiting for the time it decides to be wild again.

Savannah? We want an F1 Savannah so bad lol
Ocicat.
I wouldn't go for a hybrid. Don't get me wrong, there are some very nice Savannahs out there of all generations, but it's kind of like dog/wolf hybrids, a lot of the time you'll get the worst qualities of both animals, especially in the early generations. The girl I got my ocicat from offered me a savannah, but I declined.
Ocicats follow you everywhere, love to play, and get along good with other animals. They're all like this too. The most reliable breed in terms of personality I've seen outside of labrador retrievers. But you can find a lot of very good, loving cats at shelters too.

Is he really that square jawed or is it just that pic?
Yes he is. There must be a very little bit of Shepherd in him. He's 18 months now and over 80 pounds. He is becoming very protective of the kids.
I was told that some breeders mix a little bit of shepherd to calm them down. I don't think it worked with this one....

Sorry to hear that, man.
You never realize how much an animal can be part of a family until they are gone. As much as a royal pain in the ass my Mali is, I can't think of what it would be like to not have him here. Pets come and go but every single one leaves it little place in your heart. Remember the good times with Charlie and soon you will laugh about the times he did really crazy dumb dog things like eating the couch or digging out the freshly planted garden.

I had the pleasure of knowing Charlie for the last few years. He was a gruff old man, who protected his home and family. He loved to get his ears scratched, and he liked to hide under the kitchen table and get scraps of BBQ smuggled to him. Outwardly he looked quite fierce, but inside he was a big softie - much like many folks here. He had a big heart, and was very much loved.
You are no longer limited by your pains, Charlie. Go run with the rest of the pack now. You are free.

So miss having a dog. Have a guy at work that has a Great Dane. Love Danes. The breeder he bought his dog-Duke- from is having to move and give up breeding dogs. She is looking to give her one year old Dane away. Hopefully my buddy can talk her into letting me get him. Fingers crossed.

Here is our aussie Koda, He's now 4 and has been a very awesome and intelligent dog. When he was about a year old he was playing at the dog park and a great dane crashed into him and buckled his knee which tore his CCL. It was a difficult recover because Aussies have a high pain tolerance and are also high energy so it was tough to keep him off his leg. But nowdays he's for the most part recovered and loves swimming in the lake and is our baby's best friend.

At 8mos old, thinking that his 12# ass was actually 150#, there was a rasslin' incident with a 90# chocolate lab. Broken leg, right through the growth plate of the knee. No way to stabilize externally, three pins required. Unhappy puppeh...
That was 2008. One of them decided to shift, recently; he was limping most of this winter, took that long to narrow it down. Got it removed, and he was tear-assing around like a maniac within a week.

^^ Awesomeness Sir! ^^
My first rescue lived to be 23. My second and current rescue in about 3 1/2. Imho, there's nothing better than adopting a cat that will be euthanized.
Rescues are great.
Our two older rescues died a few years ago at 20 and 22.
The big girl next to the AR is now 12 years old. She is a moose. My wife found her at her school begging for food.
The black tuxedo and his sister are 4 now. Rescued from a construction job site.
The other two most recent we got 18 months ago living a car at the end of our street. They had a sister who we gave to another family, but she never took to domestic and is being placed in a feral colony. The boy is completely domesticated and loves people. His sister (the one we kept) is slowly adjusting to humans. She won't let anyone pick her up, but is getting used to be petted without running away.
My good friend does what you guys do in regards to rescuing them off the streets....I've just rescued mine from the local shelter.
I'd love to rescue another one atm, but I'm not sure how my current pal will react to sharing his domain with another cat.
I've read male cats tend to be much more "clingy", or receptive to human contact than female cats.
Thanks for sharing em with us :)
This is Biscuit.
Half Chihuahua and half Jack Russell. Has a big attitude.
Can’t go anywhere on the ATV without her. Loves it.

Anybody catch the 60 Minutes segment last night with Lara Logan reporting on the training of SOF Belgian Malinois? Even had a clip of a handler doing a 10,000' free fall with his dog strapped to his chest. Pretty cool stuff.
http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50145334n
A portion of the segment highlights a Green Beret who lost both lower legs after failing to identify the signal from his dog. His dog, Axe, was injured but survived. Now reunited, Ms. Logan notes during their interview that the dog's eyes almost never left his handler:

Yea he's great. Our first rescue (used to trained/retired GSDs) and he's my favorite by far. Thanks to M4C (mostly LL) our next will be a Mal though.
Mals can be great dogs, but they are beyond my experience. I do better with the Hound mentality. In fact, there is a Bloodhound Ridgeback cross at the rescue I volunteer with, that has me intrigued...

My guy is great with the girls but he just doesn't ever stop! He never sleeps, always wants to play and is always all up in your face. He's no longer chewing furniture or causing damage. He is getting more and more protective of the house. His obedience and protective training (although very little) is doing great. His Right now we are working on his dog aggression. He hates other dogs but is now doing very well out in public but not at home in the yard. Here he is today at the Parkway where there is a lot of other dogs around. He is starting to just ignore other dogs instead of trying to eat them....

Interesting things about greyhounds, they often sleep with their eyes open and they are total couch potatoes.
The first is weird, but you get used to it, the second counter intuitive at first. It's track animal that can hit 45mph and bread to race, one would expect they'd be high energy dogs requiring a lot of exercise.
But (and this made me want one all the more as it appeals to the training/physiology geek in me) they are pure sprinters, so they race 1-2 times per week, and rest pretty much the entire time between races.
If she runs around the back yard a few loops, she's tired and want to get back in the house to go lie down. They can sleep 18 hours per day.
She does not even like taking long walks with me so far, but I'm getting her endurance up! I find funny. Here's the muscular uber lean running machine that will whine after 1/2 mile of walking.
A dog who hates aerobics!!! Now what could be cooler then that for a fitness/health guy like me who's never been a big fan of aerobics? :D

I have a huge heart when it comes to animals and hate to see any in pain or suffering. I ended up rescuing a German Shep from base one night that had been malnourished and abused. It was July 3rd so I knew I would have to keep her until the 5th instead of letting her roast in our temporary kennels behind our building. My intentions were to take her to the animal shelter where she would find a good home. I'm not sure how it happened, but nine months later she's still living in my house lol. Took about a day before I was hooked (and so was she I think)
A pic the day after I brought her into what would be her new home:

And one taken yesterday. Daily feedings, some TLC and a few Nutter Butters here and there did the trick. Couldn't get her to look directly at the camera...GSDs certainly have a mind of their own:

Looking very ferocious:

She's definitely had a pretty easy ride since becoming part of the family here. One pitiful look (which she does oh so well) and I tend to spoil her. Yeah, I'm a sucker.

My current pack. Black Lab, who was free to a good home and will have her first birthday this week. Silver Lab, who cost a ton and will not retrieve. But they are the most playful pair of dogs I've seen.

Voodoo, your dogs and scenery are awesome.
My silver will retrieve, but he has to be strongly coerced. Both of my blacks do/did it because they were/are instinctively driven to do so. The old black lab in the pick-up retrieved 300+ ducks and "who knows" how many dove in her time.

If your Silver female can breed & your interested I have a willing stud. Full AKC champs in his lineage. Both our beasts have that "dd" recessive gene as you know.

This is my buddy Colonel. He was just diagnosed with osteosarcoma and doesn't have much time left. I've had him since I was about 13 and I'm 23 now so he's had a pretty good run. Despite being old, fat and riddled with cancer, he's still the happiest and most faithful animal I've ever known. We're taking him out to my grandparents this weekend for a taste of the country life. Fresh air, KFC and birthday cake for my buddy. :D

Here's Rosie. We've been together for about 8 weeks. She's a 3 year old American Bulldog / Boxer mix. She's my service dog, best friend, cuddle buddy and assistant sales associate at the car dealership I work at (as well as being unofficial greeter and mascot).

My monster he is 16 years old and is still active and playful. He has a sixth sense and knows when I am coming home from a trip, he will head to the door about a hour before I get home and wait.

Thanks!
We do it as much for the fun factor when people come over and see him as we do for the lack of shedding and hairballs. People always ask if he cares about it, and the answer is always this: "He has no idea, he's a cat."
