View Full Version : Confused about ammo.

I got my first black rifle last week and have done a fair bit of shooting since then. Today I went to try some new brands of ammo other than the Federal XM193 that I had been shooting so I picked up two different kinds of WOLF. First off was a box of military classic 55gr FMJ. It shot almost as good as the Federal but had just a hair larger groups at 50. Next up WOLF Performance ammo 75gr HP. This ammo shot really shitty groups for the first 16rds. Finally on the last four shots I had I managed to pull out a ~1.5" group (still not great but better than the first four groups) I was a bit confused by this since I thought that 75gr was supposed to shoot better out of a 1/7 barrel than 55gr. It seemed like the groups got progressively smaller as I shot but still were opened up quite a bit over the 55gr. Is this just bad ammo? I have also read that you only see the advantages of these heavier loads at longer ranges and in terminal performance; is that true and if so, are larger groups to be expected with it at shorter distances? I'll try to get some other heavier loads but that is the only 75gr ammo around here. The only other option other than the many types of 55gr is some 69gr match ammo at $13 per box. Thanks for any answers.

To get better accuracy with heavy bullets they first have to be good quality which wolf is not.

Right, but, the Wolf 55gr is shooting tighter which is what confuses me.

There 55 grain stuff is probable a tiny bit better QC wise than there 75 grain stuff.

Exactly. The smallest 10-shot group at 100 yards that I was able to obtain with the 75 grain Wolf ammo had an extreme spread of 4.5". Compare that to the MOA capable accuracy of the Black Hills 75 grain loads.

Have you considered ordering ammo from the internet? By most accounts the Prvi Partizan Match ammo which Molon has posted about several times seems to be a good quality and affordable round.

PRVI Partizan 75 Match (sometimes re-branded as Wolf Gold) is great practice ammo

almost as accurate as TAP or Mk 262 at less than half the cost

don't worry about how you're grouping with the black box, steel case Wolf ammo. that ammo is not for shooting groups....use it for drills or beer cans.

(BTW there is a whole ammo section of the forums...check it out)
