View Full Version : Possibly A "NEW" S&W 45 M&P model ?

Well In my quest for the ultimate CCW pistol I have concluded that bigger bullets are better therefore making the 45acp round my first choice. I have always been a fan of the Colt CCO model which is Lightweight officersí frame mated with a commander slide. Wilson makes something similar I believe called a CQB.

So with this in mind I got to thinking that if I could reproduce this in the 45M&P I might just have something. S&W does have a midsize but itís a full size frame with a compact barrel? That I honestly donít get seeing itís always harder to conceal the frame than the slide plus look at all the advantages that the longer slide has. Having a few 45s I decided to get a little creative and put the full size slide on the compact frame, AWSOME! I am in love. Problem now is that I donít want to ruin any of my other configurations so what to do?

Lucky for me a friend of mine had both a full size and compact and wanted a mid-size so he tore down his two pistols to make the middy. All he had as far as he was concerned where just extra parts. He never even gave the configuration laying in front of him a second thought. Asked him he was interested in selling me the leftovers and lucky for me it was a deal and here is what I believe to be one most awesome carry pistol. Yes it has been shot for reliability and rounds like a top. Itís even better than that as it came with a Bowie trigger job seeing both of his pistols had already had Bowie trigger jobs previously before the parts shuffle. Let me say its one really nice trigger and Mr. Bowie will be getting more of my pistols.

Here are a few pictures showing the new configuration which I believe would be very popular if S&W would consider it. Beast thing for them is that they have nothing to invent or do other than assign SKU # and get the UPC code.

As if I feel I didnít get lucky enough, just the other day a found this Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 to go along with my new found pistol.

Life is good, what do you guys think?

I actually really like that idea. Like you said the frame is the part that prints. You get the longer sight radius and can use any holster that will fit the fullsize. It's a win win.

I've seen some guys over on the sig forum do something similar to this (mixing and matching frames and slides to make their "ulitmate" gun).

And with that sleeve you can run it as a fullsize duty gun then bam, in the locker room swap out a mag and you've got a hell of a ccw .45

Kudos to you sir.

Love the idea man. I have been doing the same thing forever with my 1911s, but ever since I drank the M&P-aid this idea has never crossed my mind. I just might have to put one of these together for myself.

Here it is- its called the Spec-Ops model. Don't know if they make it anymore and the sights don't look taller than standard ones.

This is a great idea - however buying two pistols to get it seems like a PIA (if you're only looking for one...)

Sadly, it doesn't come in FDE, .45 with a manual safety. argh!

I made a thread about a full sized slide on a compact frame a while back.

NO REPLIES = a retarded idea. I lurked for weeks afterwards. :p

Crossgun... great stuff. It's great that the M&P45 frames and slides can be mixed and matched.

I was thinking about buying a FS and a C to be able to have any of the THREE sizes as desired. But there's a fourth option as well... which is what you've done. Buy TWO, get TWO free... sort of. ;)

Jesus, that looks comfortable.

I actually like that idea. Doing it in 9x19mm would be sweet.

You can get a threaded barrel for a standrad M&P from Storm Lake. No idea on supressor height sights though.

I tried to do this with a Beretta some years ago. Unfortunately, the 92 Compact's dust cover is too short, leaving part of the recoil spring assembly exposed :( I was really looking forward to a compact 92G Elite too :(

Ive been hearing you can order threaded barrels directly from S&W for $90 plus shipping. I also hear that it takes over a month and a half for them to ship it out.

S&W does make an M&P exactly like you're looking for. Its a partnership with Viking Tactics. Its called the VTAC M&P 45. Should be out very soon. They had it at the NRA Convention.

Edit: Correction - After checking with my S&W source its not a .45.

I think life IS good and the swapping of slides and frames on M&P45's is a wonderful idea.

Has your M&P45 "crossgun" turned out to be reliable and worthy over time? I ask because I am considering getting a 45FS to do slide/frame swaps with my 45C.

Thanks.

So the entire upper half including the recoil spring assembly, etc, is M&P45, and the lower half is completely M&P45 Compact? Interesting...
had no idea that was possible to pull off. Thanks!

I've never understood the appeal of long grips and short slides like the Sig P220 Carry. It's the grip that's hard to conceal, not the slide. What I've wanted for years is a Sig P220 slide on a P245 frame (or P220 Compact frame).

FWIW, every SKU costs manufacturers money.

Glock shooters have been doing this for a while, but we have to use a hacksaw. This is a G17 cut to take G19 mags.

It would be sweet if we could just swap parts.

I think we're going to see a lot more long-barreled, short-grip pistols if we get stuck with a 10-shot magazine limit.

Running with NO issues. I do carry it so I bless it as being GTG for me.

Trust you me you will love this combo. I wish it could be done with the 9/40 slides and frames.

crossgun... sounds good. Thanks for the feedback.

I just picked up the M&P45C. Wonderful piece. 10-rnd mags and X-grips on the way. I look forward to adding a M&P45FS to enable the mixing and matching with slides and frames.

Who did the cut-down work on your G17? I've been wanting something like that for a long time.

Thanks.

That one isn't mine, but I have one exactly like it. I did the work with a hacksaw. It took about 10 minutes. Then I touched up the edges with a file and stippled it. It has rapidly become my favorite carry gun.

Nice. I imagine you filled the hollow in the back of the grip with epoxy of some sort?

I haven't yet, and I'm not sure that I will. I may modify it so it will take a standard butt plug, but if I fill the back, then I'll also do a fairly extreme grip reduction. I have a G19 done that way, and I really like it.

Does putting a FS slide to a compact frame increase the slide travel over a stock 45c????

Curious about how that works as well.

I never cared for the 45c frame. I bought one when they first came out and my little finger would get pinched between the mag and frame. I filed it, but just never warmed up to the gun and sold it.

Personally, the mid size 45 does everything I need and would be my first choice for carry if I ever go back to a 45 that's not a 1911.

Hello Jon!

The only real reason I would put a FS slide on a compact frame is if it increased slide travel. Which would increase reliability.

I am lucky as the 45c works wonderfully for me.

What's up buddy? Glad to see you here.

That makes sense about the travel. My guess is that the longer recoil spring assembly will allow more travel. The locking block appears to be in the same location with all the 45 M&P's. Unlike the 9mm M&P's, I think the only differenc between the standard and compact frame is the grip height and the never tail. Everything else is in the same place, which is why I'm thinking the slide dictates the travel. But, I've been wrong many times before!

Obviously this is just a guess and hopefully someone will be along shortly that can say with sme certainty.

Jon
