Overkill or good idea?

I'm putting on a free float Quad rail so I consider that almost Permanent... Now I won't be able to take the handguards off to clean the barrel tSo is rust a considerable problem since it can't be maintained? Should I at least just paint under the rails?

I'd take the handguards off at least once a year to clean my rifle prior to this...

Appreciate the input

You could just Dura-coat the barrel. That would help.

Dilute some CLP with Odorless Mineral Spirits. Using a spray bottle, spray this mixture onto the barrel through the HGs. Follow up with compressed air to remove the excess.

Norrells moly resin or GunKote works well.

Rust is just a temporary solution to a permanent problem.

GunKote is a great product. I've used it on precision rifles with good success.

Rust is just a temporary solution to a permanent problem.

What do you mean by that?

For the OP, and other's has anyone ever done powder coating on barrels? Seems like it may work for what you need! I use to work at a shop that used the same powder coater in Portland OR as Benchmade. If it works for knife blades why not barrels? The finish is super slick, even, and very matte!

Cera-Kote is a great protective coating that works.

If you just want to protect it from rust and don't care what it looks like, go to the auto parts store and get a can of high temp header paint.

low grill
that's what i used recently. i picked up a barrel for a training gun, the barr. was brand new but had some suface rust pretty bad in some spots. i was able to removed all the rust degreased it and sprayed it down with the high temp version of the grill it looks great and has held up very well . this was done on the cheap (because i am) as this is a teaching/training rifle so it gonna get the crap beat out of it.:D
