First, I'd like to say this is one of the best gun-forums I've visited, there are some very knowledgeable people down here. For my first post I'd just like to aks you this question: What are the proven 9mm pistol designs that you could depend on in war condtitions? This is my list, in no particular order:
Beretta 92FS
SIG Sauer P226/229
HK USP9
Glock 17/19
CZ-75B/85B

And I have a doubt regarding these:
Walther P99
XD-M
Steyr M9

What do you guys think?

Other than that your list looks great.

Glock 19 and 17, S&W M&P9 & 9L, Beretta 92/M9, Ruger P95, pre-2005 SIG P6/225/226/228/229.

The FN FNP9 has a lot of promise. If the DA pull could be lightened a bit (to about 7.5lbs) it would be great and might pull me away from my M&P Pro, they should make a FNP9-L with a 5" barrel. The FNP9s ergos are great, it's very reliable and the DA is smooth just a little too heavy. The SA pull is light enough and has a nice short reset but I do like it to be a little more positive (snappy).

The GLOCK 17/19

Older SIGs P22xs', although I'm sure the newer ones are fine for the most part if you really understand what you're buying.

The S&W M&P9

A few polymer HKs

A few Berettas

I completely trust my beretta 92FS with my life. I wouldnt hesitate to take this gun into battle with me, hesitation wouldnt even cross my mind. this little gun (actually its pretty damn big for a 9mm) is an absolute tack driver, not to mention dead nuts accurate.

At 30 yds my 92 will put 5 rds into a 3in circle, and thats with me behind the trigger. It will also eat anything from dirty underpowered CCI blazer to Winchester Ranger T's. What more could i ask for?

This gun has been reliable for well over 1k rds now, not one single malfunction at all since i bought it new and pulled it outta the box.

My dads sig 226 actually jammed quite a bit, its 20 old though so, mabey it just needs a new recoil spring and extractor. I've tried to talk him into fixing it up but, he thinks nothings wrong with it...

I would be willing to try an M&P 9, and a glock. Im sure their great guns but, i wont trust my life to anything until ive put atleast 500 trouble free rounds down the tube of various sorts of ammo.

I wouldn't mind my own Glock 19 with night sights. All my trigger time with one has left me impressed. My current fav is my M&P9 with night sights, though I wish trigger reset was stronger and more distinct. I feel very good about the reliability of this the M&P. It had one failure to eject with the 2nd mag I ever put through the gun and those were BVAC reloads. 800+ rounds later and I haven't had a single problem with it. I've owned a FNP-9 which was a pretty smooth little gun, but I sold it to a buddy that really needed something for HD. I wouldn't mind having another one, maybe a usg model this time.

I found the Steyr M9-A1 to be not reliable enough to carry. The 3 pistols above would easily go over 700 rounds without malfunctions and eat any ammo I would throw at them. The Steyr was picky about ammo, the trigger was a little gritty, and trigger reset could be more distinct. The upside of that gun was it was incredibly easy to get back on target because of the light recoil and lack of muzzle flip. I found the sights to be super easy to use. I put in a new guide rod and extractor and reliability improved a little, but it was just too picky and malfunctioned too often for my taste.

My first duty gun was a S&W 5934 and as much as I hated the DAO trigger pull it was absolutely reliable and very accurate (I was shooting a lot more back then and that may have had something to do with it too). I was pretty rough with that gun and it just kept on working. I had a 915 that I carried off duty because I liked the TDA better than the DAO. It was also very reliable and accurate. I put a lot of rounds through both of those guns and they never gave me a single problem. When my department authorized .40s for off-duty I sold the 915 and bought my Glock 23. I still have it and really like it. I had shot Glock 19s prior to purchasing the 23 and they were always reliable and accurate and I liked the way they felt but wanted more power so I went with the 23 (about 12 years ago). At this point I don't think I would have been giving up too much if I'd gone with the 19 instead but I do like my 23.

The Glocks of course, 26/19/17/34 w/ NS and an M3 light on all but the little 26. They are just like that damed rabbit on TV, they just keep running and running...

Older P226/228 w/ NS have always been reliable in the extreme for me. No rail, but I still have an original Sure-Fire Weapon Light mounted on one of my 2 '87 P226s, with the updated lense it works just fine....

Never fond of the the Beretta 9X series of pistols, and I was issued one for 13 years, but I have to admit they worked near as well as my prefered Sigs. Big ass pistol for a 9mmP though...

My USPs are in 40 and 45 and they work extremely well. I can't help but assume, thru limited personal experience, the 9 version works even better...

I love my P35s, they are classics and I'll die with 'em, but the only one I'd tote under combat conditions would be my '77, lightly customized by C&S & me :D. Have an original Sure-Fire Weapon Light for her too, so that area is covered, as is the Novak NS C&S installed.

No real experience to speak of with the others so "No comment" there.

damn, forgot to place CZ-75 on my list. its very, very good gun. would also include the jericho/baby eagle. what the hell, jericho, tanfoglio, and CZ-75 all have interchangeable parts. after all, the tanfoglio/witness and jericho were based on the CZ.

haha, i agree! what HK's didn't make the cut?:) just for curiousity, mind you, as i used to use an H&K USP for competitions almost 20 years ago. took a lot of abuse from both my uncle and i, and kept on going. my uncle finally sold it off after placing 30,000 rounds through it. just to find out that my friends own the local dealership and the gun had a lifetime warantee....my carry is a tanfoglio/EAA witness, and it also performs flawlessly.

I have owned the full sized USP, carried the USPc in .40 as both an issued and as a POW piece, and currently carry a P2000SK in .40 as a daily carry piece. If I had to downgrade from .40S&W to 9mm I'd stick to this platform in a N.Y. minute.

G17/19 due to its well documented reliability. HK USP, same. HK45, Todd's trials, and others experience, strongly suggests it is a good platform. Pre-2005 Sig 225/226/228/229 based on many reputable recommendations.

For me list is:
1. HK USP Tac .45
2. HK USP Tac .45 Compact
3. Glock G17/19
4. Pre-2005 SIG 225/226/228/229

In a couple of years looks like M&P may be on the list.

92's: Maybe outdated b/c better options out there.
1911's: Great gun, can be finicky and expensive to get where it needs to be.

One man's uneducated opinion when compared to many experts.

I would have to go with my first ever pistol purchased back in 1993. It has been mentioned numerous times already in this thread. The Glock 19 has been absolutely boringly reliable and trustworthy for me throughout an unknown number of various types of 9mm. Literally thousands of rounds have gone down the tube of this pistol with never one FTE/FTF.

In the past I have purposely abused it, neglected it, and tried to get this pistol to fail. It never has. As a result I now do carry this pistol as my concealed carry pistol of choice, and as a result now take care of it and keep it religiously clean after every range session. The only changes I think are absolutely necessary are the addition of a set of quality (I prefer Trijicon) night sights. I carry Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P exclusively as my carry load.

IIRC they started producing the 3rd generation about 1989, so it could have been a 1st or 2nd generation. I don't have any experience with the 1st generation pistols, but the black one in the picture that I posted is a 2nd generation S&W (459) police trade in. A few of the springs were worn out when I got it, from years of police work. I replaced all the springs in the gun for $20. But even before I replaced the springs, it would not malfunction. Neither of those pistols have ever malfunctioned since I've owned them. They are known for being rugged and reliable, that's why LE agencies used them before the Glock became so popular.

I'll only speak for the ones I have direct experience with:

German built SIG 226 and 228.

Never a problem with either of them that wasn't 100% the fault of bad ammo or a bad mag.

jwinch2
08-15-09, 13:49
In no particular order;

CZ 75 (One of if not the most widely used handgun platform in the world)
Glock 17 and 19 (If the grips felt comfortable in my hand, this is what I would have rather than my CZ's)
Beretta 92 (m9) have proven themselves to be very reliable throughout the years.

As for ammo, lightweight and fast moving seems to be the best bet in 9mm. I am partial to Speer Gold Dot in 115 +p and 124 +p. I also am starting to really like the Hornady critical defense in 115 +p and have shot TAP in good amounts with no problems. Winchester Ranger ammo has a proven track record both in ballistics testing and in street reports from LEO's. I haven't heard much on their newer Supreme Elite Bonded ammunition but I imagine that it will be a good performer as well. I stay away from the 147 grain ammo as that has been a poor performer according to both ballistics testing and shooting reports.

Curious: For those who've listed 3rd generation S&W as a live option, have you specifically used the S&W 4506? That's an interesting looking gun to me, I saw one used in the movie "Street Kings" recently, and also saw one on Gunbroker for a good price. They seem to have a couple of interesting updates compared to a classic 1911 design.

I don't have any experience with the 4506 but I too have been interested in that model. Since I purchased two S&W autos and like them very much, I've wanted to get more of them and start a collection. For me, it's like the black rifle thing. It's addictive. S&W made so many different models, there is an incredible amount of options. The next pistols that I want are the 4506, and a compact 9mm for a CCW, and also a 3rd generation version of the 459 that I have, I think that would be a 5904. I was going to gun shows, gun shops, and pawn shops and finding some good deals on these pistols, before I deployed to Iraq. The 5906 is like new and it was in a gun shop for $339 on the shelf next to $500-$700 plastic pistols. The plastic was flying off the shelves, but that 5906 just sat there, long enough for me to scrape up the money to take it home.(about a week) :)

If you want more info about the 4506 check out the S&W forum.

I don't regret trading for the USP9c, but I wish I had just ponyed up the cash and kept my G19. I'll probably pick another one up sooner or later.

I really enjoy carrying C&L w/ the USP though. The only downside I see to it is the HK tax.

Pluses for the G19 are it's slightly easier concealablity, it's price, and it's extremely readily available aftermarket.

Either pistol is extremely well suited for anything you can throw it's way. I can say either is better than the other, I guess it just comes down to

When it comes to the pre M&P S&W's I would not trust my life to a S&W with a magazine drop safety.

9mm pistols I trust....

Anywhere in the world, issue or personal use:
Glock 17/19

Smith M&P 9

If issued to me:
Beretta 92F/M9

Sig 250/228/226/239 (CS caveat)

Browning HP (they do eat my hands though)

This is based on work and personal experience. No, the HK did not make the cut, with even bigger issues than Sig in CS.

”As for ammo, lightweight and fast moving seems to be the best bet in 9mm. I stay away from the 147 grain ammo as that has been a poor performer according to both ballistics testing and shooting reports.”

I go with Doc on this one the 147 loads have come along way and why beat on the gun for the same or almost exact same performance. No Thanks I like the 147 Ranger T -Gold Dot and HST loads

I have adapted my life to carry a Glock 17.
So far, it has been a worthwhile endeavor.

Currently Glock 26 through 34.

I carried a S&W 5906 or 5903 for many years, good solid guns, reliable as hell and very durable.

Had a S&W 645 for years. Carried it on and off duty while working Narcotics (ol' school here) haha. Just gave it to my nephew who is a LEO. That was a very heavy pistol. Stainless Steel. Good shooter though and never had a miss fire.

For me the most trouble free 9mm that can be serviced by me anywhere on the planet is the Glock 17/19.
