View Full Version : shortening Glock 17 grip to 19 length
Hi, I have read some here have reduced their G17s' grip G19 length. I'm thinking of having this done, but will it introduce any possible side effects? Pictures would be great too, I searched and only found 2 or 3 that have done this.

I'd like to know about this as well, I think a 17 with a 19-length grip could be the best of both worlds.

Sounds easy, but I'm sure I could screw it up. I have a 2nd Gen 17 with a beat up frame I wouldn't mind trying it with.
My personal 2nd gen Glock 17 has this mod done to it. I have not encountered any problems with it so far. Nor any of my customers pistols that I have done my chop job to them.

I was hoping to do this as well. Anyone have any recent pictures of this? I have an older G22 and a tonne of G23 mags ...

Shazam, I don't have any pictures but they're out there, and this modification has also become common enough that most guys working over Glock grips will do it too. I don't know if you were looking for a DIY or to send it in to someone.

I recall that thread too. I thought it was here too but haven't looked.
I have one that was done by Boresight Solutions and it's one of my favorite pistols. I think it is a great carry combo.

I have a G17 with this mod. I just ran it in Hackathorn's advanced tactical pistol...if there are side effects to doing this mod I can't find them.
I think this setup is great. There is really no disadvantage to the longer G17 slide concealment-wise, and even though I have hands big enough that I never noticed my Glock 20 being particularly large, there is plenty to grip.
I guess if there's a downside, it would only be that grip plugs don't fit anymore. If you want it plugged, it's got to be something permanent like epoxy. I haven't gotten around to doing that yet, but I probably will.

My grip plug still fit. You just have to dremel out the half-moon with the sanding wheel to the exact shape of the grip plug and drill a new lanyard hole.

On mine, I have a Glockmeister plug, I also had to take a little bit off the plug to make it fit flush (even, flat contour) with the rear mag flat. Otherwise, it protruded just enough that mags didn't completely drop free 100% of the time if the gun wasn't pointing parallel to the ground.
It's not the most beautiful job, and if I had a better selection of tools I could probably smooth it out enough to be professional looking, but it's not (too) ugly, and is 100% functional. I'll see if I can get some pics up later tonight.

Cell phone pic... It's was very difficult to get that step to work just right with the G19 mags and the grip plug
You can see some of the areas where I had a hard time trying to shape things just right. In some cases, I switched to an X-acto knife to cut slivers from the plastic. I also had to de-horn the corners of the step.
After polishing things up with 1500 grit sandpaper, mags slide right in and out perfectly.

I have not taken down the measurements. The best way to mark where to cut requires having a G19 on hand. Here's how you do it:
1. Detail strip the G19 and the G17, then partially re-insert two of the three pins into one of the frames (let's call this Frame A). Leave the pins sticking out of Frame A about 3/8".
2. Put Frame B beside Frame A so that the pins in Frame A go into the corresponding holes in Frame B. Press the two frames together so that they don't shift in relation to each other.
3. Scribe a line on the side of the G17 frame.
4. Separate the two frames, then repeat the process for the other side of the G17.
From there, cut the G17 frame with a fine-bladed hacksaw. The marking process described above will leave the G17 frame a little bit long, so you'll have to make the final cuts with a rasp. Once a G19 magazine seats easily (with enough clearance to seat in case of dirt or debris) you're almost done, but a couple of finishing touches remain.
Someone has already mentioned cutting the half-moon for the grip plug, but you also have to restore the flare to the magazine well so reloads don't hang up. (The stock G17 magazine well is flared, but you just cut that part off.) This is more of a hassle than any other part of the job. Then finish it up with a fine file and/or a Dremel.
The G19 floor plate rides at a different angle than the G17 floor plate, so a cut job leaves an odd-looking angle between the bottom of the factory texturing and the bottom of the frame. Stippling is a great way to cover this up, but that's a different thread.

WOW, I really like that idea.
I did one of these grip chops a few years ago.
Ended up regretting it as I didnt feel like I really gained much of anything besides killing the resale.
That is if that's something that concerns you at all it definitely something to consider.

Here is a few if my g17 cut to G19 mags/grip. Damon at SSVI performed this along with the stippling job. I have tried my hand at stippling but I really dont have the artistic vibe going nor am I patient enough to perform this type of work. I think it turned out well. His turn around time was reasonable as well.
I have done a ton of them and they are becoming more popular.
