View Full Version : boots?
Im looking for a comfortable pair of boots that will run less then $100, black, breathable, but at the same time, i dont want my socks to get wet when i step into a puddle.
sorry. everyday use. i work at a range so im on my feet a lot and have always been a tennis shoes kinda guy.
I liked these and am getting another pair.
it linked a sling adaptor..
i guess what im trying to say is im looking for a rugged pair of boots that are not too bulky and heavy. are they all the same when it comes to boots or are there any particular brands i should drift towards or stay away from?
Oops. fixed below.

There is no other boots, but DANNERS! haha. Yes, there are others and I have worn them thru the years, but for patrol, range, calls outs and K9, Danners are the boot to have and wear. Oh, and they are resolable too.

Alico are my current every-day-wear boots

If interested, STP often has sales, so sign up for their flyers
As mentioned above my others, Danners, and Wellco both make fantastic boots. Oakley boots while comfortable break down very fast especially in high heat environment.
If you are looking for a hiking boot design more so than G.I. style, Take a look a Marrell (http://www.merrell.com/US/Home.aspx) I have worn my pair of Marrell Chameleon 2's for over 3 years now with 0 complaints. There are a lot of great boot company's out there. I suggest you go try some on.
If you supply more information on your needs and intended use then maybe I could point you more in the direction you want to go.

Ain't that the truth. Danner boots are great. They are rugged and durable and don't break in your feet like the old regular Army boots. Twenty years ago I was on jump status at Ft. Bragg and I really liked them a lot. And on those looonggg road marches, they were great, my feet did not blister up and cause me excruciating pain:eek:
The Airborne Infantry is where boots are really tested.;)

I just recently bought my first pair of "tactical" boots. After trying on several different brands I decided on the OTB Bushmaster boots in tan. They are very comfortable, lightweight and super breathable! I tried them on after wearing my K-Swiss all day and felt like I was bare foot wearing these boots! I highly recommend!

When you're right, You're right!
If you look at the long run, the 200 plus cost is really cheaper.
I bought a pair of the Danner Telson 8 inch with gortex and the side zipper about a month ago and they have been great. They are a little warm in temperatures over 90, but on the night shift they were just right.
If your color choice is limited to black, then Danners are probably the way to go with the myriad choices they offer.
Otherwise I've spent many years in the field with Army jungle boots and goretex booties.
I'm going to break the rules, I kind of like my Bates ZR Duty boots.
I am also setting here wearing a pair of Oakley NAIL hikers that are beat to hell and back, and almost 3 years old. Desert heat might kill them, but as work shoes my Oakleys are the best thing since slided bread and shaven panty lines!

One thing I learned about my Thors, is that they don't like hot brass. I was firing a SAW (left handed) while standing and the brass piled up next to my right foot. I had one piece of brass that stuck to the nylon upper and melt a nice whole thru the boot.
If someone is on a budget, the Czech surplus desert boots are my new favorite. They are made of cotton duck with a light padding. Reminds me of an old pair of sneakers. Very little arch support though. They are not waterproof. But, they make a great range boot.
Price is only 19.97! Brand new...

Iraq Ninja,
That SUCKS w/ regards to what happened to your THORs !
Sorry to hear that Dawg.
I know on my OCONUS deployment every day for 12 plus hours w/ 65lbs of KIT that he THORs absolutlely rocked for my feet and needs.
While addmittedly about the same comfort level for me as GSG9's they have a
WHOLE lot better wearing durability than the Addidas did.
The ones you mentioned look comfy for the DAWGs.
I will look for them.

HOP,
I still love my Thors too, but one now has an extra air vent :).
While we are on the subject of boots, we should mention socks...
I've worn both Danner Arcadia 6" (summer) and 8" (winter) boots for the last 10 and 5 years, respectively, and still have them today. Both have Gore-Tex to keep my feet dry and they are absolutely rugged, sole and leather. These are what I wear for patrol and there were days where I have been on my feet for an entire tour with minimal sore feet. I've worn Rocky Mountain boots prior to purchasing Danners and the Rockys caused pains to my right and left heels.

Nobody's digging the Chuck Taylors?
I've got four pair of Converse Stealth that are the most wickedly cozy boot I've ever worn.
Almost two years of daily wear, in the outdoors, on one pair that is still holding up extremely well.
I had some Matterhorn Bootzilla kicks that, though lacking in comfort, made up for it in durability. Those things are unreal.
looks like i'll be trying out the OTB bushmaster, any recommend places i should order?

Sportsman's Guide can !@#$ %^ &*$%. I would rather go barefoot than deal with them.
Sorry to hear about your OTB's. I will keep that in mind. Here is my recomendation for the best boots. At $70.00 they can't be beat.

Nothing against Grey Group but if you are in Houston, you can try them on at Top Brass Military on 45...just to make sure you get the right size.

Regarding OTB (On The Beach) THORs,
VERY comfportable for long watches, light, good secure footing on surfaces, agile etc.
They do not have a lot of protection as others regarding shank & toe box etc.
BUT what they offer in lightweight, speed, flexibility all day/night comfort tough to beat.
ON my last deployment we had some 18 hr. HTZ watches. Sure glad I had them and not Danner's etc...

Buy a pair of Keen hiking boots. They are by fare some of the comfiest and longest lasting out there right now. I know a couple of SF guys that have been "testing" them for some time. For duty boots I like Lowa and Danner.
My hunting/outdoor boots are either Danner or Filson, I would not wear Rocky or Herman Survivors if they were free as they cause me pain after the first mile. There is no such thing as a good cheap boot IMHO, just good boots, and cheap boots.

I wore a pair of Keens a couple trips ago and they are comfortable as shit. I couldn't believe a waterproof boot could be so light.
Had a pair of Keens and for some reason my shins hurt like all hell after a say a vigorous 5 mile walk in those boots. Took two pairs of Asolo Fugitive GTX boots with me to Iraq, and coupled with Smartwool Adrenaline socks, remain my favorite boot/sock combo. I'm sure you'll be able to find something under $100, but frankly I would highly suggest doubling that budget if you can and buy a solid pair of shoes designed around performance rather than just value.
Any opinions on Garmont T6 & T8's?

I have a pair of the T6 desert boots. Well made, comfortable, but a tad bit heavy for my work. They would be nice if I was humping a ruck and needed more ankle support.
I didn't like driving with them on.
I feel that finding one boot for all situations is like trying to find one mag pouch to fit all kinds of mags, or one universal camo pattern. You can get good ones, but not excellent ones.
For a work boot I currently use a hot weather, side zip Belleville

If I am just spending a day on the range, I like a hiking style boot. I use these Merrell's. MOAB ventilator, however mine were in a brown, not gray.
