I fired my 1911 for the first time in 4 years last weekend. I forgot how easy that pistol is to shoot! I noticed the finish was worn of from the leading edge of the slide from when I used to carry and shoot it more often. I also noticed that I could almost shave with these edges (this is an ORM 1991A1), if I was out of Mach 3 refills.

1. How much does a basic dehorning job run , ballpark?

2. Is it necassary to refinish the whole pistol?

As my pistol does not bite me, to me dehorning is to save wear and tear on your holster from presentation drills. Am I missing anything?

$65 on the low side $90 on the high side for a complete dehorning of the entire gun. Most smiths will dehorn the slide only if you so choose.

If the gun is blued/Parkerized and you have the gun dehorned from top to bottom it will require that the entire gun be refinished. If you have just the edges broken on the slide then you can have just the slide reblued but it might look off if the frame has some wear.
