I pulled my disconnector spring out of the trigger to see what was what and then kinked it trying to squeeze it back in, flared end first (new Colt spring on the way from Brownells).
What's the best way to install this spring without damaging it?
I push it into the trigger with my fingers and then use a small punch to push it down and and seat it.

What I have found that works for me is a little bit of white lithium grease. It usally goes right in with a little pressure.
I push and simultaneously twist in the direction of the spring coils. Basically the same method used for installing the Extractor Spring.
I found that some lubricant (as has already been said) and "screwing" it in (as has already been said) works.
