View Full Version : Anyone got pinged for oversized baggage with Storm IM3100?
Anyone flown with the IM3100? I was just browsing the regs at the major airlines and 62 linear inches is the limit for regular baggage.
The storm im3100 measurements on their website come in at 63 inches... which is a $175 excessive baggage fee on most airlines.
Anyone really been pinged on that 1 inch? If so... it looks like I'll be returning/selling this storm case and getting the Pelican instead.
Seems odd that this would be outside of normal regs for airlines and considered the "best" traveling case by most sites selling them...
That is not the measurement of the IM3100. But I know how you got that number:
39.8" (Length) + 16.5" (Width) + 6.7" (Height) = 63 inches
There's your length,
I have a IM3300 that is 53.8" in length, and it has always been just irregular baggage, like a hockey stick or surfboard, and had no fees applied.

Same here. Rifle cases have never been treated as an additional bag for me. I have a large piece of luggage for my gear and a separate rifle case. They never weigh the rifle case, either.

Good to hear you guys havent had problems... this is why i asked:
From United's website:
Oversized, overweight and excess baggage and special items
You may be subject to additional fees if:
* you check more than two bags;
* any of your bags weigh more than 50 lbs. (23 kg);
* any of your bags exceed 62 linear inches (158 linear cm)*; and/or
* any of your checked bags are considered special items.
*linear measurement = length + width + height
So does the extra baggage have to meet all of those categories then? i.e. over 62 total inches AND over 50 pounds, etc.

Ooo! Interesting definition of "linear measurement". I hope that is a typo. Since the airlines are struggling I'm almost certain that they WILL at sometime adopt anything that can garner them extra money.
Southwest has listings for maximum, and then they have a listing for "Sports Equipment" that allows excess. At least they did several years ago. I flew SW many times and never had any problems with my sports equip.

That's an interesting point about case sizes. I checked Jet Blue's site. They have a maximum linear limit of 62" in the "Checked Baggage Requirements" section. They have a separate "Sporting Equipment" section, but I did not notice any waivers for the maximum baggage limit for gun cases, etc...
I went to the airport today and asked a check-in lady about my upcoming trip. She said that the l+w+h is indeed a 62" maximum.
And rifles/sporting/other equipment all falls within that 62 inch limit.
The good news is that i told her that my case is 63" and she said:
"We have never gotten out tape measures to check... as long as it is close, it wont be a problem". So as long as youre not coming in with a trunk big enough to fit people inside it should be ok.
So here we go....
dr Texan,
Which airline was that?
dr Texan,
Which airline was that?
specifically i asked the lady at the United counter.
ill find out for sure soon enough :eek:

I hope the people @ the southwest ticket counter don't bust out the measuring tape on me. I bought a pelican case designed to hold a breakdown shotgun from cabelas and it is pushing the limits at 62 1/2. But from what the lady told you I should be GTG. We'll see pretty soon.:D
united gave me zero issues flying with the 3100 even when its a couple inches oversize. Compared to other "oversize" baggage youre checking in with, they look at you twice wondering why youre even in that line.
