Is there anyone who makes tactical clothing (pants, vests, etc.) in the USA?

5.11 and everyone else I've seen are all made overseas.

A good amount of TAD Gear's lineup is USA made.

Most of TAD Gear's stuff is made in the US and it's quality is unsurpassed. It's worth every penny.

Another vote for TADs USA made clothing. The materials, workmanship and layout of the clothing are top notch.

Crye precision also makes USA made pants and shirts but while the materials and workmanship are high quality the layout of the pockets are not as versiatle as the TAD stuff IMHO.

+1 for TAD

I'm usually wearing at least one piece of their clothing at all times.

I'm definitely pro TAD as well. Their designs are unsurpassed, and quality is top notch. The softshell jackets they make set the standards for all.

TAD all the way, they have great gear. The market has been saturated with 5.11 gear it's like Under armor with the fitness market...

I think some of the Arcteryx LEAF line is designed and built in Canada (I know my Combat Jacket was but my pack was not).

TAD Gear, as mentioned, does some of their stuff domestically as well.

Beyond Tactical makes everything in the US and it's custom. I have some of their kit and it's pretty slick.

I believe Crye also makes their stuff here.

Most of these folks sell product that start at $100. I've had all of the above, except the Crye, at one point or another and it's all top shelf. In terms of longevity, I found the Beyond stuff outlasted the others, but in terms of actual pocket utility and design, I think the TAD stuff had a little edge.

Then again, if given the choice, I like EOTAC's pants the best for "tactical" and Kuhl's pants the best for comfort and function. Kuhl is a surprisingly bad ass maker of clothes.

what about for us tall guys? The 34" inseam from TAD is a killer for me, and I've emailed them about getting an unhemed pair with no response:(
I am looking at the spartans though

I am not so sure that what you order is what you get from them. I ordered a custom made jacket and pants from them. The pants the waist was too big and the inseam too short. They reluctantly took the pants back to mod them (add a draw string) which did not cure the problem for the waist, legs still too short and ever since I have had a $225 pair of pants that hangs in the closet and reminds me of how someone's else's error becomes your problem.

I think I know what size measurements my pants size is.

Their customer sevvice sucks. Beyond Tactical / Fleece to be avoided.

mm,

I have a quick question for you. Not to take this thread completely of topic but I was looking at the TAD stealth hoodie. I know you reviewed it and I was wondering how it would do in the winter. I live in New England and for a lack of a better word's winter sucks here. I was just wondering how it would hold up.

Thanks,
Mike

redsox20 - i've only gone hiking in the mountains/snow with the TAD stealth (gen I and II) - i don't live in an area with very cold, crappy winters, so i can't speak from any personal experience.
note that there are quite a few different versions of the stealth, so each one will perform differently. the current version right now is called the 'reloaded', and is much like the gen I schoeller material - lightly insulated, and quite water/wind resistant.
if by 'hold up', you mean 'durability' - i don't have any reservations about the material or quality. as far as performance, like in wet weather, breathability, etc - that's going to depend on the conditions you use it under (static vs exerting etc).
for example, if you're walking around town in the cold, it might not keep you warm enough. if you're shoveling snow in your driveway, you may sweat like a pig.
it all depends on what you're looking to use it for.
i'll PM you with someone who lives in new hampshire and uses TAD gear - he might be able to answer your questions better than i.

That's what I wanted to know thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I usually dress in layers anyway. My grandfather always say's, "if you have it you can always take it off." I'll shoot any email to that address you sent me, but I'm almost certain I'm going to snag a stealth reloaded soon anyhow.

Thanks again,
Mike

i have the stealth reloaded - i'll be writing it up when it gets colder. note that it's a snug fit, and if you want to layer it over anything more than a t-shirt or thin baselayer, you probably want to go up a size.

Hi Cold

I have a pair of their Mojave pants(I got last year) and one of their soft shells from several years ago. Both were fit very nicely. I've never had to interact with their customer service so I can't speak to it ^_^; (Honestly though I'm not trying to be their shill - I like their stuff but I prefer Kuhl or EOTAC)

I've had great customer service(albeit sometimes a little slow) from TAD.

I have a consistently awesome experience whenever dealing with Grey Group though, so I tend to buy everything from them or REI ^o^

Very interested to read that, mm. I really want one of them but am not sure if it's exactly what I need. Also a little unsure on the sizing since I fall right at the M/L division, and while I'm sure a medium would be a little small I'm not sure if a L is right for me or if I need to step up to XL, based on the many, many comments that they run a little small/tight.

it's going to be at least a month before i'll be able to get to it. based on first impressions, it's going to be very similar to the gen I stealth hoodie (http://militarymorons.com/gear/clothes.4.html) as far as materials go. the differences are in the details/features, like the better hood etc.
if it's a stand-alone jacket you want, then you're probably ok with an L. if you want to wear it over a thicker mid layer, probably not.
personally, i don't like layering insulated soft shells over anything more than a thin base layer. if i need more warmth and weather protection, i'll wear a thicker mid layer with a more roomy hardshell (which are getting lighter nowadays).

Thanks, mm. I bet a large would work well for me. It would usually be layered over a flannel shirt, or something similar, with maybe a pullover lightweight fleece "overshirt" if things were really cold. Last winter I was able to make due with an old lightweight LL Bean fleece jacket and layering it together with a hooded windshirt underneath over a flannel for wind resistance, but I would end up with about too as it got colder, and I still didn't have much wind/water resistance. Unfortunately I got caught out in the middle of nowhere freezing my nuts off more than once when the weather changed on us last winter. I'm an engineer but I end up in the field a lot in remote areas and don't always get to plan very far ahead on my clothing choices. We don't get much in the way of ridiculously cold weather here in OK usually, but the wind can be killer.

It would be nice to have a jacket that can handle all the wide range of conditions with a little layering, versus my current method of carrying around a small gym back full of different shirts, jackets, and windbreakers. It gets to be a pain when I'm playing "musical trucks" from the motorpool ;)

Sorry for the hijack folks :o
