I would like to set up a handgun with a sound supressor.
No special reason or "mission", just something for shooting for fun. But I prefer even my "fun" guns to be optimized for reliability and quality.
I mostly do/will be shooting Glocks, XDs, MP, or 1911s - so I would prefer to use one of those models. (calibers: 9mm, 40sw, 45acp)
Referencing the handgun, new barrel, and supressor:
Is there a certain platform or caliber that works well or does not work very well at all ?
. . . .a certain replacement barrel that is recommended?
. . . . certain models/versions that won't cycle well ?
. . . or mods that should be done to get them to cycle reliablilly . . ?

Tilting barrels require a recoil booster (aka Nielsen Device.) Also with a smaller diameter bullet you get better sound reduction from a suppressor.
Lone Wolf makes an inexpensive ($89.95) threaded Glock barrel, that is certified by Gemtech.

Fyi, AAC Evolution series cans have the Nielsen Device built in.

Afaik, only the Jarvis is made to drop in / ready to shoot specs. No extra machining of bbl to your slide needed.
Choosing your thread is an issue also. From what I've read so far, the one metric option, M13.5 X 1 LH, has the advantage of staying tight longer while shooting because it's a left hand thread.

The Glock will likely be the easiest and quietest of the pistols you prefer.
As mentioned, you can get a Lone Wolf barrel and be all set to go.
The Evolution 9 from AAC is VERY quiet and an excellent pistol can. It will work perfectly on a Glock.
If you are running a 9mm carbine -- which I think you said you were at SHOT -- I would recommend the SWR Trident 9 and get either the 3-lug mount or the screw-on mount for use on the carbine. It's full auto rated.
Apparently, you can order and "up armored" Evolution 9, but I would only buy suppressors that are in stock somewhere. Trust me -- do not custom order suppressors. It takes long enough for ATF, no need to add months to the wait for the can to be made.

BTW: For a pure toy pistol/suppressor combo: I use a Beretta 92FS.
As Shivan suggested, the Glock with the EVO-9 is a whole lot quiet fun. Totally hearing safe and reliable on Glock 19. Just go get some 147 gr 9mm and blast away.
My favorite can is the TAC 65 22lr. Cheap ammo and user serviceable (cleaning). It was around the area of 175 without the stamp. The host gun is a Walther P22 and a Savage Bolt Action. Low cost fun at a reasonalbe price.
If you want a 9mm can, the AAC EVO9 and the SWR can are pretty much on the same level. They are both great cans, but the SWR is full auto rated.

Hearing safe, leave your foamies at home. One guy shoots his in his basement into phone books it's so quiet. Another said he was shooting in his backyard and his neighbor next door, who was outside, didn't notice.
A question that I had along the way to my Evo 9 purchase for my 226 9MM, ammo. Like DBautista said, for 9MM subsonic is recommended. You can shoot the lighter grains but they will be louder. Also, read up on Silencer Talk about JHP bullets through a wet can. They recommend against it.
I'm getting ready to make the same jump using my G19(and G17). I think I will be getting the GemTech Trinity (http://www.gem-tech.com/TRINITY.html) w/L.I.D.(Nielsen Device) primarily because you can purchase the extra end cap(1/2"x28) and use it on a standard 22lr rifle or get the Tri-lock for an AR15 9mm upper. Anyone here use this setup?

What do they say about JHP's through a dry can?

You really can't go wrong with a simple integrally-suppressed Ruger Mark II or High Standard.
My AWC High Standard runs like the Energizer Bunny until I run out of bullets (which you can buy in bricks cheap).
Suppressed 22s are also great for training new folks not to be scared the first time out (no loud 44 magnum bang, recoil, etc.).
Although there are smaller and sexier 22s (the Walther P22, for instance), I didn't have a particularly good experience with mine (three times back to Smith and Wesson, and finally they cut me a check for the full purchase price. I told them I LIKED the gun's size and looks, and I just wanted them to fix it. They insisted that's the best the gun would do, and said they'd rather keep a happy customer rather than keep on having to back-and-forth it without it getting any better).
As for suppressed 22's...
I have been thinking about putting a can on a Glock 19 with an Advantage Arms conversion kit.

HotRod / Rob S.....I use my Trinity on a G19, G17 as well as my 6" 9mm carbine/SBR. It works flawlessly. I would highly recomend it. In addition, I have turned the barrel down and threaded my Ruger MkII and use it on that as well. When shot side by side with an Outback 2 on the Ruger, the Trinity is quieter. Gemtech makes adaptors for the Trinity so I am able to use it on various thread configurations. I am very pleased with it and would recomend it without hesitation.

Almost forgot. I use the Lonewolf barrels with no issues, no fitting and no hasles. Nice folks, I enjoyed talking to them at Shot.
I've used my Evo 9 on my 19, 226 and an older 9mm AR and I have no complaints. The Gemtech Trinity and SWR Trident 9 are also good choices IMO.
SWR Trident or the AAC Evo-9 would be my two top picks.......edge to the SWR. Both are neck to neck in suppression and can be converted from boostered to a 3-lug mount. Both are built tough as nails and are type III hardcoat anodizing. The trinity is a nice can, but not as quiet as the other two.
