View Full Version : Anything here about LMT going MIM?

I saw a thread on TOS about LMT going MIM for their gas keys. Guys are getting cracks and crumpling of the gas key inlet even in low use carbines. What's worse is cracking due to staking and LMT telling people this is perfectly normal.
Has anyone here had any problems? LMT is saying it's purely cosmetic, but I'm not a fan of pre-broken parts. I agree with one poster over there who says this is an item that should be added to "the list". If the Military specs out bolt, carrier, and barrel steels, I'm sure the key falls in there somewhere (or with something else).
For future reference, does anyone know who does and who doesn't sell forged gas keys? I'm confident Colt, Sabre, Rock River, and DPMS all use forgings.

For me, and this is just my opinion, this is a non-issue for booger eaters on TOS to fret over. Got a problem with it? Take it up with LMT and they'll make it right. I think it's bullshit the way people drag companies through the mud without giving them a chance to address their issues. If you aren't comfortable with a mim'd gas key, they are 20 bucks to replace. Nobody has to buy into LMT's line about their new part being better, but we're all big boys. If you don't like it, put on your big boy pants and do something about it instead of keyboard crusading over it.
BCM sells forged keys for like 20 bucks including hardware.
Wouldn't things like contacting LMT and trying to find out who reliably makes forged gas keys be doing something about it?
By the way, for some reason nothing came up in my search but I found a previous topic about it here through google. Sorry about that.

I have one with the MIM key. When I got it the staking marks were cracked like I had never seen before and I got curious. I won't be using the one I have, and I won't be buying more. Not when BCM BCGs are available without the MIM.

Sorry, the chart. And am I the only one this topic's replies are completely scrambled for?

Rob, have you considered adding it to the list? In other topics it says gas keys are supposed to be chrome lined as per Mil Spec, but people are saying the LMT's are not?

the time stamps are all screwy. i wasn't responding so much to your post as to posts I saw elsewhere like on TOS. I wasn't necessarily calling you a booger eater.
That's good to know, as fortunately I don't eat boogers. :D

If my CRS memory serves me well Grant posted a few days ago that the latest LMT BCG's he got in did not have the MIM gas key.So maybe LMT dropped it after the crap storm.Other than that I have not inquired as to what the gas keys are made of since the original discussion started months ago.
Like Spamsammich said,if there is a problem contact LMT and let them deal with it.I can say for a fact that Mr.Swanson at LMT is responsive to customers....for a most recent example I just spent the last three days passing emails in great detail with the man discussing bolt specs and design, and have done similar inquiries in that past with the same results. If you see something that causes you to have questions contact them.In my experience LMT will either answer the questions and say good to go or replace the item in question.
So I have absolutely nothing negative to say about LMT as a company or thier products.Been extremely good to me.
As far as other brands, yeap BCM and Daniel Defense are top notch in quality and customer service as well,so you can't go wrong there either.
That said Ive started spending as much as I can with DD due to thier quality, customer service and mainly the fact that they are a good ole southern based company.
FWIW, Last week, I just received a backorder of 6. All 6 have regular machined chrome-lined keys. In August, I received 4, two had MIM keys and two had machined chrome-lined keys.
