View Full Version : class gear
i have an eagle chest rig that zippers and clips in the front. don't know the name. i have 4 dbl m4 mag pouches with flaps with velcro attached, 1 flashlight pouch, accessory pouch and 2 pistol mag pouches and camelbak . i think this set up is ok for shtf but i'm not a fan of the flaps with velcro on the m4 mag pouches.
for classes, what rig is a good suggestion? a little lighter and simpler but still incorporating pistol mags and a decent amount of m4 mags. i felt 4 mags would be fine in single mag pouch config. maybe 6 if the class was high round count. i like the idea of the cumberbund/pouch idea on the esstac bush boar but don't know about their quality.
on one hand i want something light and simpler but still supportive, on the otherhand i'd like to double this as my back-up bugout setup
My rig:
4 mags total (with one in the gun), and i have 2 spare pistol mags on my chest (in addition to two on my belt). plenty of room to expand.

Only thing i'd like to add is a IFAK on the right side and some type of general purpose pouch on the front.
Believeraz, i understand what you're saying. It's easy to get stuck on the gear. I am not going to be using this gear for work, as I work in a restaurant and go to school for music. I just am a gun enthusiast and want to be more proficient in case of emergencies and frankly , to have more fun at the range and to get better at class.
When I ran my vest at class, I only used 1 mag in each double mag pouch with the flaps tucked behind them because It was more comfortable. I wonder if I should always do this or just switch to different pouches on the vest I already use.

Why fix something that works for you?

Newyork,
Hoss got it right. Why change what's working? Master what you have, then branch out as needed.
IMHO anyone outside of a professional user that thinks they're going to be using any kind of load-carriage in a defensive situation is deluding themselves.
I use a chest rig as a way to carry extra ammo to the line to back-feed into my belt-mounted primary pouch or a Redimag. The setup that hoss posted, with perhaps a leatherman-type tool and/or med kit is the A-answer for pretty much all non-professional users, and may very well be the best solution for LE too (but that would be outside my lane).
There are multiple threads here on chest rigs, load carriage, etc. Something else that you may find will help you is this article (http://tacticalyellowvisor.net/8343/56227.html) on thinking of load carriage as a total system from the belt all the way to armor. I think that this is the single biggest point people miss when choosing gear: it all has to work together.
No pistol ammo here, but this was my most recent training and competition rig. It's being retired for a custom hard-stitched solution I picked up from a local maker yesterday.

Rob s are you thinking my solution would be to sell my chest rig as configured and buy a paired down set up more suitable for traing since I am not a soldier? I'd walk away with extra cash for ammo. I wonder what I could get for my set up? What do you think? I like the eagle M4 fb shown above. I also think the new BCM set up might be a good set up but more expensive.

I use an Eagle FB 3 rifle mag chest rig. An Eagle padded Molle belt w/suspenders. Attached to the belt is my Safariland 6005, a double Eagle pistol mag pouch, a Leatherman case, a really small boo-boo pouch, a dump pouch a two Eagle single rifle pouches. The chest rig is to reload the rifle pouches on the belt when needed. All reloads come off the belt for consistency and speed.
I normally use a Wilderness belt, Raven 1911 holster and a weak side comptac mag pouch. If I were to purchase an Eagle padded belt, could I attach my raven to it? How? I like the sound of your setup GotM4

put the belt loops that come with the Raven in the oven until they go flat. Then pull them out with work gloves and attach them to the holster with a slight bow in them.

That's made by Emdom. I run it that way so it folds back over itself then I wire-tied it down so that the holster rides high and doesn't flop around. It's actually almost in same exact position as my dropped offset Redi-Tac holster for my M&P Pro and my STI .

Now that's slick. Beats my 550 cord method through the grommets...
