Since I started doing some carbine training recently I had to figure out an ammo-carrying solution and needless to say it was confusing. There are lots of options out there. Folks in the military and law enforcement use this stuff for work so they know it better, but they still often have questions about specific applications.
So, inspired by rob_s's M4 spreadsheet I put together a spreadsheet to break down the different options and help people compare them.
Here's the pouch comparison spreadsheet. (http://pouchcentral.blogspot.com/2009/12/modular-and-belt-pouch-comparison.html)
There are two tabs in the spreadsheet, one for rifle mags and the other for pistol mags.
On each tab you'll see the pouches grouped by platform (M4, 7.62, AK), style (shingle vs. pouch) and capacity. So for example, if you want to carry three magazines side-by-side, look in the M4 Triple Shingle section. If you're looking for a 7.62 pouch that holds two mags stacked outwards, look in the 7.62 Double Pouch section.
(If you're new to ammo pouches, a "shingle" generally holds the mags side-by-side across your body, while a "pouch" generally holds multiple mags stacked outward from your body, often with a flap to secure them.)
Pistol mags are grouped similarly. They're broken down by double-stack vs. single-stack, and then by capacity.
There are a bunch of manufacturers represented but I am adding more all the time. I hope it helps!
p.s. I'll also be blogging about this and related topics at http://pouchcentral.blogspot.com.
