Impressive I say!

Wonder if someone could do a step-by-step paint process of their arms either photos or videos?

In the beginning it was black and then it was wrapped in camo clothe....

and then It looked like a plastic army man gun.

I almost left it that way but I want it to actually blend in a little.

This picture is so sexy I made it my desktop wallpaper. Hope you don't mind.:)
If I owned these two rifles I'd carry a picture of them in my wallet between the picture of the wife and kids.
I'm guessing you had to completely dismantle everything to get that kind of quality paint job. If so, how long did you have to wait to reassemble??

Post your painted AR's here and possibly a brief description on your inspiration or process.

Here's mine:
Started with a new build and decided to use Brownell's Alumahide in Caote and Dark Earth. I also decide to use both colors and use the darker tone as contrast.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/peewee_dignos/A052.jpg

After a few weeks, I decided to paint my other AR this time in OD. I gambled and used a new paint called Painter's Choice (Oregano) and went with an old OD look.

Are the black surfaces like the forward assist, safety and charging handles just unpainted or is there a third color?

SPECS:
- ADS matched upper & lower, OD Green
- DPMS lower parts kit
- Young Mfg Chrome BCG
- Titanium firing pin
- Extended Charging Handle latch
- MagPul MOE OD Green Stock (MilSpec)
- Non-Rotating Pin Set ("Anti-Walk")
- Hogue rubber OD Green pistol grip
- DEZ Arms 16-inch H-Bar barrel, with M4 feed ramps (to match upper receiver)
- Yankee Hill Machine rifle-length lightweight free-float tube, with end ring
- Yankee Hill Machine low-profile gas block (set to proper 1/32" backspacing)
- Slip-Over flash hider
- MagPul rail covers (Black, OD Green, Flat Dark Earth for a sort of ACU/digital camo suggestion)

I stripped & DuraCoated the remaining parts WW2 OD Green and then applied Matte Clear over everything to match the OD Green ADS upper/lower receiver set. The Non-Rotating/Anti-Walk pin set was easier to install than standard trigger/hammer pins!

The sad thing is that now I have to sell it! The wife declared that we have more than enough AR15s and spare parts, so the excess guns have to go... oh well!

SPECS:
- Superior Arms lower receivers
- DPMS lower parts kits
- Blackthorne upper receivers & barrels
- Young Mfg Phosphate BCGs
- Extended Charging Handle latches
- Extended Bolt Catches
- MilSpec 6-position collapsible stock (wife's); 4-position collapsible stock (daughter's)
- CAA pistol grip (wife's)
- Cavalry Arms handguards (wife's)

I completely broke down both carbines to strip & DuraCoat. DuraCoat Matte Clear was applied over everything when complete. My wife's carbine was painted with what is supposed to be a lightning bolt for my wife's favorite NFL team, and my daughter's pink carbine was decorated with custom-painted (DuPont urethane) pink camoflage furniture.

My wife & daughter love their new carbines! We went out last weekend to break them in, and everything worked flawlessly on them. Now they want to go out shooting every weekend!

(Hint, hint, fellas: girls/ladies are more likely to be enthusiastic about shooting and not questioning your firearms purchases if they have their own guns... :D )

You are diabolical. Does the pink rifle have "chips" in it like desert camo does? If so, that is brilliant!

The answer to your question is YES, it does have the "chip" effect reflecting old 3-color desert camoflage.

However, I can't take credit for painting the furniture: I bought them that way (dirt cheap, too!!) from a guy in Missouri who sells these custom-painted furniture kits on eVilBay. I had purchased a desert-camo furniture set for my wife's gun, but then she dropped some hints right after I bought that furniture set, that caused me to DuraCoat her AR15 in her favorite NFL team's colors instead...and subsequently sold the Desert Camo furniture set.

Thanks for compliments! My girls LOVE their ARs!!

Yeah it looks that way on the pics. I should have turned the flash off. I misted the light green with dark green. It looks closer to foliage green under normal light.

I like it. I am inspired to get a cheap stock set and try it out. As to painting the whole thing, I think that a few strips of white nursing tape here and there on the receiver and it would break it up enough, yet get rid of the tape and the furniture set and you will be ready for Spring.

-Got 12" of snow last Thursday, 3" Monday night and another 6" last night. I am really ready for Spring.

Thanks. It was supposed to be a FDE-like finish with Rustoleum paint, but the paint didn't cure right and was screwed up. It was removed with brake cleaner shortly. I just ended up painting a camo pattern over it...so this finish wasn't what I had intended it to be.

Yeah the mesh laundry bag works and there easy to find. Try using a small piece of spider mesh if you can, or even camie netting from the military work and provide cool patterns.

Anything to break up the outline, and reduce contrast to background, and reduce shine.

I index the tip of my trigger finger right on rear corner of the mag release fence... the Mk18ish paint job was pretty new when I took the pic, so very little wear... and I had shot it too soon after painting, so the paint wasn't quite cured and my gloves wore it off the front of the pistol grip.

i wish krylon would come out with a darker tan- more FDE, or even just a nice solid brown. they've got black, really light khaki, and OD... little too much contrast for good cammo, in my opinion. the idea is to break up the shape, not make it look like something else.

Use the light khaki, and over-spray it from about 2 feet back with the brown to tone it down some. Dark grey primer works pretty well too either as a dark grey or for toning down light colors.

http://i26.tinypic.com/2jbl2tc.jpg

If you look at the light areas on this scope and stock you will see that it has been oversprayed lightly with green and brown to take some of the brightness out of the khaki. I also hit the brown and the green with some of the khaki to fade them a bit as well.

Paint wise, just used Krylon camo Khaki, camo brown, and Satin Brown boots. I also used a 'honey' colored clear coat 'glaze' to tone down the bright khaki.

Krylon did make a brown camo paint I know they did as I have a can of it I think I got it at walmart. But I agree I wish krylon made something that was a good FDE like magpuls, I think that their camo ultra flat OD green is a great match for Ranger Green cordura and webbing.

unless you're just soaking the weapon, the paint doesn't go anywhere you don't want it to go. personally, i just basically mist the gun, and if i want it darker in some spots, i mist again. my experience is that light coats will hold up better than thick coats, because the paint does wear off and/or get lifted by oil and solvent- thinner coats will wear in more isolated spots. i also dont care if it wears, though.. obviously the thicker you lay it on, the longer it'll take to "wear through," but it is more likely to flake as oil seeps under.

as far as wear- yes, it wears

Thank You Sir,

It started life as a Colt 6933, and has been through a few changes before its current state. It still has the factory Colt barrel, I shaved the FSB down to fit under the Mid-length URX II and had Texas Armament re-park it for me. You cannot see it in the picture, but the voids around where the MIAD and the enhanced trigger guard have been filled with epoxy, then sanded down so that the whole area is extremely smooth with no edges to rub the middle finger. I also polished the BCG bearing surfaces, BCG hammer cocking surface, and the hammer face.

Colt 6933
KAC URX II Mid-Length
REDI-MAG
Colt low-mass hammer and blue hammer spring
Magpul MIAD and Magpul Enhanced Trigger guard
Magpul UBR
KAC 0-600M BUIS with the aperature custom bored to the diameter of the 300M BUIS
Larue FUG
KAC Triple Tap Brake

I liked your color scheme as it's also unique. The barrel shouldn't discolor unless you put put a couple hundred (or close to 1k) in quick succession. As for wear, it's bound to happen, but heck, these are 'tools', so I guess it's almost like painting a hammer or screwdriver. It's going to get wear with use, haha. Bad comparison, but you get the point.

The gun's a standard RRA lower with a Stag upper with a Krylon rattle job. I'm not sure why you're not able to find Krylon, as they're pretty common/available in many places. I just got the ambi selector last month. If memory served me right, it's a RRA ambi switch. It's holding up well for now, only time and hard use will tell how it'll be.

I saw the rustoleum camo last night in my CTD catalogue and it was 6 cans for 17.99 in 3 colors...wow thats a deal.
I am partial to krylon camo because I know what it does and doesnt do...I also know what it likes and doesnt like.

The paint is a great protector from normal wear and tear... It keeps absorbs all the scuffs, scrapes, dings and knicks... It will wear off more high traffic areas faster depending on the finish on the metals surface. I notice my bead blasted ss barrel has yet to lose any of its coat and I relate that to how porous it was after bead blasting... Regardless its just an excuse to do it again and maybe try a new scheme...
I also baked what I could in an oven for over 24 hours under the heat from the pilot light only... some shyt I left in for a couple days.

It is finnicky on certain teflon coated surfaces btw...

rustoleum is good paint.. i hate how long it takes to cure, though.. freaken weeks before its good and hard, even if you bake it. krylon's good to go in like 30 minutes.

when i applied the krylon to my rifle, i did it in direct sunlight with the temperature at almost 100 degrees, while spraying the stuff on the rifle, i could literally watch it dry. It was dry to the touch in about 3 min and hard as a rock after 10.

when i was about 13, i tried painting my paintball gun a camo pattern with rustoleum and ended up stripping it off because the shit still wasnt dry after a week, hell after a few days it was still tacky, and i applied it properly in every way, under ideal conditions. ended up repainting it with krylon with much better results.

Yea, that's true of Rustoleum. I learned to get around this by using a heat gun carefully. If done carefully, it's pretty much cured at around 20 to 30 minutes. I tried this trick once, and it worked pretty well. I could kinda see the paint evaporating as it was drying under the heat. Make sure it's done in a well ventilated area though.

last time i used rustoleum was on some magazines.. i set 'em in front of a space heater in my shop for 3 days, and they were still tacky. i think it's got more solvent or thinner in it, so rustoleum'd plastic parts stay tacky even longer... i've had pistol grips and stocks that seemed like they took over a month to cure up.

satin rustoleum is pretty hard to beat for magazines, though. especially since magazines can sit around unused for the 3 weeks it takes to get them decently cured.

Here's mine. It's in the SBR thread as well. While not really painted, it has been changed from the normal black. :p

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/342/9074a96b9b055c84.jpg

It's a custom machined lower from a manufacturer up here, cerakoated in tan. The internals are a mix, a few DPMS pieces(until I can swap them out!), Diemaco trigger/ hammer/disconnector, KAC ambi mag release, TROY M16 sling mount, Magpul MIAD and CTR.
The upper is a Stag N8CQB, 10.3" heavy barrel, KAC RAS, Magpul XT rail panels and rear MBUS, KAC hand stop, and Aimpoint T-1 in a LaRue LT660.

What I need/want is KAC Triple Tap(but will likely end up with a PWS), an ambi selector, and a FF rail(a URX II if I could find/get one). Once I change the rail, I'll cut down the FSB and put on the front MBUS. Oh, and probably a Surefire X300. :)

That would look sweet if you had the upper coated.

Just to mention that the KAC Triple Tap on a SBR would probably be fire breathing signature. Not to discourge you, just thought to mention. I have one on my 16" and it's a sweet break.

I'm gonna do a few other pieces in tan, maybe the upper, not sure yet.

I've seen the pic of Costa's gun in the dark, and it made a sweet fireball. :D So I know what you mean. Ideally, I'd get one for my SR-15 as well. But I'm just a poor government worker. lol

I'll try a PWS first I guess.

Hey Gunner, is that only for regular troops in the Bundeswehr, or is it also "Verboten" for a private citizen to paint his rifle?

Overhere, I'm not allowed to paint my issued service rifle (unless I'm SpecOps, which I'm not, I'm your average LSHD reserve OPFOR :D) but as a civilian I can paint my personal firearms in whatever color I like.

TheGunner
09-23-09, 06:13
Well, the troops in the sandbox can paint there rifles if its ok with the CO.
In country, no way unless you are SF.

As a civilian it is a little complicated.
Painting you rifle in camo is not VERBOTEN by law, but by the sport-shooting-associations. All of them.
Sounds insane but I can almost understand it.
The public an the politicians over here are more or less all anti-gun.
The only jutifications to get a gun-licence here is hunting and sport-shooting.

For sport-shooting you need no camo and the hunters are of the old loden coat style, so its wooden stocks with scrolls only.

By them, the anti-gun-guys, painting you rifle in camo will not fit in the legal-raster but in the militia, right-wing, active shooter, nazi, gun-weirdo raster.
Every time we have an active shooting /school shooting in Germany the public is...lead by the medias...beating the drum for a weapon ban. And as we all know, politicans want to keep there powers.

So to stay low profile no camo on the rifles, no camo dress on the range, no 30rd (can only hold 10rd´s anyway) "bananna" mags at matches (IPSC).
Be sure that if you train for the next Zombi-invasion in your battle kit, you will be on the next news with some stupid, false statement that could have effect on the entire German gun-law.

That is why they don´t let you shoot camo-guns on the range.
Even singel color OD guns are touchy.

Stupid but that´s the way it is. It sucks.

Cheers,

Gunner

You write some of the oddest shit i've ever seen on this board, man.. that's not an old style CAR stock- it's a VLTOR. and what's a "full sized carbine?" A "full-size" M4 carbine is a 14.5" barrel- that one appears to be a mid-length 16"

Can someone please tell me how to post a picture that I have saved to my desktop.

you have to host the photo somewhere- flickr, myspace, photobucket, etc... then you copy the pictures location (by, once posted, right clicking on the picture, selecting "properties," and copying the address) and click the sunset icon here on the post page.. paste the location of the photo there and it'll appear in your post.

I like the dirty looking tan´ish the best.

We are not allowed here in Germany to paint our rifles in camo.

Hey team..
First post here.. I just spent the last 1hr going through the thread and I have to say that you guys have some absolutely beautiful rifles.. Well done..

However I have a little different idea of what camo is, so with that said I’m betting that most of you (but not all) LOL.. Will hate my latest’s creation.. I call it Zombie Camo Hahahahahahaaa.. I just had to post it up.. You either love it or hate it!.. Hahahahaa I cant wait to hear what you think of it..

Some quick facts:
The following colors are Durcoat
Green, Brown, Black and Beige

The following color is from the House of Kolor (Auto paint)
Candy Purple

30% of the skulls where from stencils the rest of the skulls, Our Constitution and the Reaper were hand down.. (Took forever!).. Well three weeks..

LOL.. Let the comments begin and how I destroyed I perfectly good AR.. LOL.LOL…

Here's mine. Took awhile for me to get the nerve up to paint. Started with OD to get a feel for things. I wanted the paint to be dark and close to the black so it didnt stand out alot. im going to let it get all bumped up over the years instead of add a second detail layer.

of you guy's that have the balls to paint your rifles...I couldn't do it. I guess I respect the "black" in the black rifle, but what I am saying is that they all turned out awesome...

I was thinking about one of my HK's..., but I would "F-IT" up!!!

Great jobs!

Its a flash hider, it works as wel if not better than the birdcage it replaced. I have not tested it that much though. I honestly got it cuz it looked cool.

Dang! should I do it? If I only had a little artistic talent I would feel better about a perfectly good finish and a can of paint.:(

Absolutely.

Nothing screams "that guy has a gun!" more than the outline of a black rifle.

Other than the rifle I use for patrol, I have either painted or plan to paint every other one I own. The one I use for patrol doesn't really need it because the rest of our uniforms make us plenty visible, especially the bright shiny badge:mad: (I know it's tradition and it looks good but it's a major target indicator, even in the dark)

Not too much of an issue, since the paint was old and was almost saturated with oil and solvents. Cleaning it off with 100% acetone was a lot easier.

what you do is post them on a picture mule, like flickr or myspace or photobucket, and then you copy the image URL and post it in here... you can manually type (no quotes) " image url " or you can click the icon of the sunset (orange and green button) and past it in there.

so long as you don't move these above photos from where you uploaded them here, they'll stay visible in this thread. do it the other way in the future, though.

Ahhh, this is perfection right here. Shit, I may just print this out and go find someone with some talent to replicate it for me. Well done dude. In fact, prefer it as you have it here better than with the brown you've added, and the worn and abused look is just full of character.

This purchase was initiated in November of '08 (go figure). Due to some backorders and then an order change it dragged out until December of '09. Then the ATF took the reins and ran with it until last week. I picked it up yesterday.
Slapped some parts on it that I had and now I'm trying to convince myself to finish the camo job on it.
