Thanks man, that's actually the first AR I ever painted. I'm pleased with the results. :D
I call "photoshopped." You put a camera on a tripod, snapped a pic of the ground, placed your rifle in the frame being careful not to touch the camera or tripod, and snapped another pic. Then you fired up GIMP or PhotoShop, opened both images, layered the rifle pic over the ground pic, and hit the top layer with 50% Transparency save for the MIAD and magazine.
:D Looks about as perfect as I've ever seen.

Thats an "operator". Very nice work.
here is my olympic plinker. been modified to resemble the one in blood diamond. now where are my bdp lmfao
Some dumb ?s but how do you like your flashlight mount, where did you get it and how much. Thanks.
well i love it it stays secure during firing and holds my surfire perfectly. i purchased it through amazon from m1 surplus. it was around 30 bucks and came with two top pieces one with a rail and one smooth top. i was actually hoping i could grind it down to get it to fit between the gas tube and barrel but my barrel was too big but it works out fine where it is. thank you for the interest

What Brand/Color name is the darker brown in this paint job? I think I want to paint my rifle a solid brownish tan color and this is about right.

It is and I did it myself. I got it from mydipkit.com or something similar. The process is fairly simple although you would have better results from a professional.

NOT ONCE EVER
It makes it yours! Custom paint is awsome! Its like wearing your underware on the outside of your pants(you know the ones with the little bunnys on them).

I personally won't use Krylon any more due to overall feel afterwards and a bad experience but I've done a shotgun and now my SBR on top of several stocks with DuraCoat.
I don't need to paint mine for real time operation use, but I do it for a little extra protection and personalize it. You can't see it but I have "B5909" painted pretty subdued on my stock. Any Army guys will recognize it as my Battle Roster-1st initial of last name followed by last 4 of your soc. Its yours buddy, make it yours.
I have an SBR and would like to just Krylon it a tan color. I really like the look of them when the Krylon starts to flake off due to wear. Just looks bad ass in my opinion.

Is it really such a great idea to advertise this to everyone and their mothers at the range... I imagine posting it on the internet isn't so hot an idea either.
My SBR has iron sights, do you tape up the front post sight and rear peep? Do you have to tape up anything else? I assume you just pop a mag in and close the dust cover and fully extend the stock and get with it?
For my SBR paint job what I did was disassemble the iron sights. I left the post and rear appeture black but spray the housings. With this I still get a good sight picture as the post stands out. You could mask off the tops of your irons and be just fine. With my ACOG I masked off the fiber optic bar and the glass portion. on the occular lense I used one piece and then on the objective lense I used many pieces to tape on the inside of the housing and stuffed a cotton ball in to ensure the mask was on all sides.
As far as magwell goes stick a mag in. Close your dust cover and spray. Also with that if you want you can take the dust cover off and hit the inside (out if its open) so its not black and stands out.

I haven't tried it myself, but there's a pretty good tutorial on the Lightfighter forum. I have an old SKS I've been thinking about experimenting with.

One of our members here used that tutorial to paint his rifle and it turned out really well.

When did Aveno start making paint? I thought they only made soap? I would definately be interested in picking some up though as I've been really impressed with Aveno products. Aveno helped cure my acne in high school and get laid.
To get that scaley look use a mesh net. I use a mesh dive bag; you can buy them at your local dive shop for about five or ten bucks.

Any updates on this? I've never seen old fashioned woodland camo dip, i'm loving it!
I have been pm'ed a few times about what type of camo paint i used for the woodland guns. The truth is i am starting a small hydrographing company and this is some of our first work. So it is woodland camo dipped. Much better finish than a painted gun in my opinion. But i am biased:D

What Brand/Color name is the darker brown in this paint job? I think I want to paint my rifle a solid brownish tan color and this is about right.
Thanks,
Mark
Haven't been on for a while, sorry I missed this.

My Aveno Woodland MarPat paint came in the mail a few days ago. I plan to following the Pat Rogers method.
How do you get the snake skin look? Is it nylons?
mesh bag as mentioned. if you let it shift slightly while painting, you get a nice 3d effect as the colors layer.

I know the background sucks, I was taking the pics for other reasons. But I figured I'd go ahead and post them anyways. Maybe my ass will grow a creative hair soon and I'll feel like actually putting more effort into taking decent pics:D
Paint was a simple base coat of Aervoe brand Light Coyote, followed by a coat of their standard Coyote on top of that. That's it, nothing special. Just wanted something other than the black/FDE mix that I had on this one before, which I always hated for some reason on this particular gun. I'm happy with it now.... mostly:p

Also, here's my BCM 14.5" mid-length being run in my Vickers Tactical class a few months ago. Used the method "From The Book of Pat" to paint this one, using Aervoe paint, and it turned out great (same as my M&P15-22 back on page 37 at the bottom).

Here it is amongst some other unpainted carbines. You can REALLY see the difference a good (and functional) camo paint job makes. The other painted SBR on top is fellow M4C member TwoSqueeze's BCM 11.5" with Battle-Comp brake. Very nice little blaster!

This is gonna get some OD blotching and overspray after the remaining black parts get done, to break up the results of my inattentiveness (shouldn't have let the laundry bag mesh line up like I did). Otherwise, just gonna keep getting it dirty.

That's Duracoat Multi brown base coat and then German Flecktran Dark green and then Olive Drab and then I traced the patterns in matte balck then used a stencil to shade the multi brown. Pictures don't do it justice

Who offers hydro dip? How well does it hold up?
Adams Arms mid-gas piston 14.5" upper with BCE 1.5 pinned, Gunkote'd FDE, and barrel contoured under the handguards to m4 profile by Adco.
Eotech and stock painted by me with Alumahyde Coyote. Grip and rail covers magpul FDE. My first foray into 5.56, and wanted to try a piston for the hell of it, so figured I'd take advantage of mid-gas and a BCE.
I was going to GK the lower as well, but I'm kind of digging the two-tone look.

carp:
Nice job. Which colors did you use?
I like it carp, looks like it would disappear real quick in the woods and brush.
... so when are you gonna paint the optic? :D
Gents, I purchased the Aervoe paint from Brownell's. I used Sand, MC Green, Dark Green, Earth Brown and OD. I also used a Rustoleum light green in a few spots. I believe they label it "Army Green". It really is what I would label loam green. I thought it sort of resembled one of the multicam colors.
I stuffed paper in the magwell and barrel and taped the irons and top of the rail on the receiver. I hung it from a pipe between a couple of saw horses. Then sprayed a sand base. Then Marine Corps Green (the darkest green). Then Earth Brown. Then Dark Green (actually lighter than MC). Then oversprayed a bit to blend with OD. Then spots of the Sand and loam green and a light OD overspray in a few areas. I didn't even wait between coats and just held the templates up with my hand. I cut them in small enough pieces to be manageable, but large enough to cover overspray. I suppose a fellow more patient than I could do a better job if it really mattered to them. I just wanted it to be functional as a tool.
I attached another image showing the cans and templates in case it helps someone. Sorry for the crap photos. I didn't plan on posting them, so I just used my phone. This image makes it look more green than it really is. Might have been before last OD overspray. Not sure. I suppose it is essentially the same process that Pat Rogers more professionally revealed over on Lightfighter.
I agree that black ACOG really shows the contrast. I've mostly used irons on this gun (practically, it really is only a 200-250 yard gun), but I threw that ACOG on it late season when light was worse and longer shots possible with the leaves down (good set-up, by the way). So, I might as well paint it too. I've used the same process on smaller items (holsters, bipods, SF lights, stray cats, etc.).
I suppose I re-channeled my childhood military modeling kit skills. I grew up during a time when kids did things like that and then went out and shot each other with Daisy Red Ryders and blew up the models with match tip bombs. Ah, the good 'ole days.
Happy hunting brothers,
Carp

How do you like the Adams Arms upper so far?
Redundant repost, apologies
Love the adams arms upper, I cant say I've put it though it's paces or anything, but it is a simple, robust and elegant piston adaptation for the AR15. Thus far the accuracy appears to be "it hits what I put the dot on." but I've really only been fine-tuning the function.
My original upper is a 6.8mm with a semi-auto BCG balanced by an extra strength spring and H2 buffer. For the Adams Arms upper, which has a full auto BCG, I had to switch to a carbine buffer, but kept the extra strength spring. I was originally experiencing short-stroking, due to the over-weight H2 buffer. I tried an H so as to move in a step-wise fashion, but still had occasional problems until I switched to the standard carbine buffer. Since then I have had no issues, but my round count is only about 200
All in all, it works as advertised. The recoil is soft, the mid-length gas system is great, and I love that the piston system doesn't cook off oil from the internals as quickly my DI 6.8mm, allowing less oil to be used overall. This would seem to be the best part of the piston system thus far. Also, the melonite finish is quick to clean, and I have had no wear marks on the buffer tube so far.
As far as furniture, the Samson extended rail seemed excessive to me at first, but it is growing on me, and it weighs so little I'm reluctant to chop it down unless I take some courses where I really notice it.
Finally, the BattleComp is awesome. Returning to target is effortless. Between the 5.56's minimal recoil and the BC, it felt like shooting a pop gun; I couldn't help but chuckle the first time I shot the upper. This is just my limited experience with a pretty low round count.

Mine has a Khaki base. Then I overlayed some straw for the "pinestraw" technique. Sprayed it with brown, lightly. Then taking off the pinestraw letting it dry wit ha fan blowing on it. reapplied as necessary until happy then I just lightly misted ODover the whole rifle.
Try it with carboard boxes or a toy gun or something first.

I have not tried duracoat but I have used the Aluminhide II (coyote brown I think it was?) and it came out great on another rifle I had (I'll try to find a pic). It matched the Magpul FDE furniture perfectly.

I used a combo of rustoleum and krylon that I could find locally and sponges cut up into little chunks to create the pattern. Started with a base coat of rustoleum camouflage khaki followed by stripes of krylon Italian olive. Then sponged olive over the khaki and vice versa. Over the whole thing I sponged rustoleum camo dark earth, army green & a little bit of krylon pebble. A light misting of khaki and olive, and voila...
If you search the refinishing forum on TOS you'll find a sponge camo tutorial, that's where I got the idea as much as I loathe to admit it....

How do you like the AA system?
Y'all make me want to build a new rifle, just so I can paint it.
It is a damn shame my agency will not let me paint my work carbine. It would definitely add to the functionality, as there is no naturally occurring black in nature.
Recently at an agency run carbine class, the instructors (SPECOPS types who are not subject to my restrictions) had painted carbines. The paint was chipped and worn. Personally, I thought it gave the carbines character. Functionally, the randomness of the chipping certainly must aid in camouflage.
My hat is off to those who took the time and did some really solid work.

maybe there is oil or some other protective film on it? you could try lighter fluid or acetone to take it off. also, a little bit of sandpaper may take some gloss off (if there is any) so the paint has something to stick to.

Jeez, you guys are so critical. I tell ya, if its not EXACTLY how you want it its all wrong, huh?? Get over it guys, first off the MBUS can me mounted in any configuration, and I just had them on there so I could paint them also.
And no the fiber optic on the scope is not painted I masked it off first.

Great answer.
Another way would've been to explain why you're doing what you're doing. No one was criticizing you. Generally sights are mounted correctly and in the normal spots. If you have a reason for doing what you're doing, we're all ears.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the positive feedback. This paint job was my attempt at creating a multi-environment camouflage for the various types of terrain here in Central Oregon. I feel like it worked out pretty well, plus it was easy and cheap which is a winning combination.
You've seen what it looks like in my driveway and the high desert, now here it is in the amidst the ponderosa and bitterbrush..
That'll blend in around here real nice. I'm very much considering trying my hand at that.
However, I'm kind of leaning towards a UDE thing because it blends in around buildings, more.
Or... I'll just leave it black..

Are you over here on the dry side of the mountains too?
You should definitely try your hand at the sponge camo, it really is super easy. UDE would be cool too. The nice thing about rattle canning is you can come up with pretty much any color scheme you want and its pretty cheap. Or you can just leave it black I guess, but where's the fun in that?

Using matched furniture keeps it looking better longer, as the plastic parts, if painted, would probably be the first to wear off. Especially since they're the points of contact during use.

Used Aervoe sand, coyote brown, and O.D. green. The R-1 was previously painted with Alumahyde II coyote brown, all I did was take off the sling, taped up the sights, Battlecomp, lenses (optic and flashlight), tail cap button and stuck some tape in my IWC sling mount then tagged it up! The MOE stock and Tangodown grip were already FDE, btw.
Excuse the cellphone pictures.

QUESTION EVERYONE: How does the paint affect AR resale value? I painted a KAHR 40 blued pistol with Brownells dark earth and am having a problem selling/trading it, even though the paint job came out great.
cant say for resale but i have been able to make some extra spending money doing my operator paint style (krylon tan and some green like spec ops overseas) for my friends, and i always take a painted ar-15 to gunshows to try and drum up business.

There are two types of people - those who will paint their weapons and those who won't. The first group won't have a problem buying it if that's what they're looking for. The latter shudder at the thought.

Nah, I'm a bit further north. Portland. On the outskirts.
I used to live near the mountains though. I've tried to stay in the wet areas though.
That's why I mentioned UDE. It blends in better with mud, and buildings.

Thanks, the rifle was cerakoted patriot brown. It's a little darker than KAC taupe and the LMT sopmod brown. It's closest to DD's FDE, like which can be seen on the RIS II in the photo.

It's not as so much about having an 'abused look', but actually using the rifle as a tool. The look is just a side effect of use. The Rustoleum holds up relatively well, but there are flaking/scratches that aren't really noticeable until closer.

The shake n spray kit works fine for small jobs, just move the part as needed, not the angle of the sprayer. For bigger jobs, most any airbrush will do once you get the mixture right and dial in the output. Either way, disassemble the internals, and prep the surfaces properly for the best result. After that, be patient with light, multiple coats or you'll be sorry!

My 2 newest builds - a Mega MA-TEN .308 and a Noveske Gen2 FFL with MUR upper. Both rifles have Troy TRX Extreme Handguards and AAC Muzzlebrakes.
The 5.56 rifle will be my new duty rifle, replacing my wife's AR that I've been carrying for the past couple of months (I had been carrying an ACR but came back to the AR platform). The T-1 will be getting some paint, just don't have the right mount on hand for it yet.
The .308 is going to be used in a hunting/LR plinking role. I've got a 1k yard range and I'm hoping it's up to the task of ringing a steel gong at that range consistently.
The rifles were painted with Duracoat Tactical Flat Dark Earth. It's very, very flat paint and has almost no reflectivity at all. I'm probably going to sponge over with some browns, tans, and greens when I've got more time on my hands. I've never seen Larue's UDE up close, but from pictures this seems very close to that color. You can see the FDE plug on the ACS stock for contrast with Magpul's FDE.
The top photo is WITHOUT the flash, bottom is with it.

John,
The 5.56 looks almost identical to the rifle I am in the process of building....only difference would be standard lower and stainless barrel (as I will be using it in a "semi-precision" role with a 1-4x). How do you like the TRX Extreme rail? What length is it? How does it balance with the M42K on there?

I love the TRX Extreme rails. I have no need for a quad rail and they give me the ability to attach anything I need to the rail without paying the weight penalty for all the extra rail space I don't need.
It's a 13" rail. As far as balance with the M42K I think it feels fine considering there's a 1lb. weight hanging off the front of the gun:D.
The barrel is a 14.7" from AR Performance. It's a 1/8 twist, ratchet rifled, mid-length gas, and is QPQ (melonite) coated. They sell them as 16", but they'll cut it down for a reasonable price. It's threaded 5/8x24 and the AAC 51T brake has been permanently attached. The barrels come with a 9310 alloy bolt and are on sale right now for $265 shipped (INCLUDING the bolt).
I just finished assembling these before the picture so I don't have any range reports yet.

Awesome. I just picked up a Noveske 16" SS and will more than likely have an M42K on there in the future...but I went with the 13" rail just in case I ever wanted to do the SPR/M4 so that I can have the clearance. Thats not a bad deal at all for the barrel you got...should be a good shooter. Looking forward to a range report.

The paint job and dark patterns you did are awesome, a lot of people mess up when trying to apply the patterns but I think you nailed it. I'm not feeling the bright base coat though. Is it white or is that the camera flash brightening up a tan color?
It looks like Krylon Khaki. Under a harsh flash it will appear almost white.

That's what I thought. I personally love krylon, it's cheap, and the fact that it wares off fairly easily, I think gives a gun character.

Thanks. I guess the first step is usually hardest (the mindset to do this)...as you're taking a $6 can to spray something that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars. I went in with the attitude of "spray this tool and get it done with," then shot the hell out of it.
Used Rustoleum sandstone series brown boots, and Krylon's camo dark brown.

No. No it is not. Just because someone likes a camo pattern with candy pink, sky blue, and jet black doesn't make it an effective camouflage.
To answer your question, no, you didn't mess up too bad (or at all). You're just not done. Personally, I would dust over the entire thing with a rattlecan (Aervoe or Krylon) of OD and finish it up with a really light dusting of whatever dark brown is available.

doc, no real reason. I wanted to see the balance of the carbine with RAS and the old CAR stock. I just got the MOE handguards recently, and I haven't fully decided if I'm dedicated to using them yet. I've shot a couple hundred rounds (static and moving), and they're growing on me.

No doubt!!!
I'm not a guy that needs to camo or paint a gun, but I got tired of black and rattle canned my newest carbine. It didn't quite turn out as I planned due to using too dark of a base color and too much OD mist coat over everything. The multi color pattern almost disappeared, but for now I'll leave it alone. I have a light and sling mounts on the way for this one, maybe I'll redo it once they're on there:

ETA: I just noticed something...interesting. In the pics I posted, with actual sunlight shining on the carbine, it looks like it's generally green in color. Sitting inside, it looks brown. Probably an effect of the OD, but I'm surprised at the difference in perceived color in different lighting.

Thanks...I do need to get it into the environment around here and see how it blends before I do anything with it. Even though I don't 'need' my carbine to blend into the background, if there ever was a situation requiring me to bug out, this is the one I'd grab (after some more testing).

BCM, This is fricking awesome bro. I'm not all for tryhing to duplicate a camo pattern as the best pattern is one localized. But I do have to say this that is slick, it's smiliar but enough difference to look nice.
Would you mind sharing colors, layers and the colors used, and what you used as templates? Thanks in advance.

Far as I know he likes it alot.
I havent shot with it, I was just there to paint, but I played around with it, reticle looks good, works in low light.
The mount I dont like...at all. And its heavy.
I could shoot with it though. The lens is big, looks good.

Thanks buddy.
I tried matching the ATACS pattern without "matching" it.
The matching I did was colors and BASIC pattern.
On all of my painting for rifles, I strictly try and utilize a hard line fading to shadow, if you look outside at plants and trees thats how it is.
My "stencils" include an old target backing (usually cardboard" with bullet holes.
This makes a broken up pattern.
I use OD Green, FDE and Dark Brown and usually follow up with a nice light dust coat of my light color to mute the darks.
Seriously though it looks sweet!

I stripped it down and used Moly resin OD and flat black. then came back after curing and filled in the roll marks with the black and then back into the oven.
the skull was an after thought and I may cover it with another coat of OD.

It came out good and the finish is better than the pics show. it was coated a few times and after 3-4 shooting sessions it no-longer gave off a "paint" smell when hot. I like the FDE but in Indiana OD is my choice. I considered a grey color but was not sold on it since I don't know anyone that has it done that way.
I am waiting on a Noveske lower to arrive but that will most likely stay black.
If MAGPUL puts out maybe it will be an FDE project.
I'm the other way around - I think FDE is great in Indiana because we're brown so much of the year. It's really only green for a month or so in the fall and spring, the rest of the time it's either cold-brown or scorched-vegetation hot brown.
Alumahyde is good shit.
Quietshooter that looks awesome.
Thats the color I had planned on going with my M4.
That or a brown, and Only on the Lower.
Can you take some pics in natural light?
I would like to see it.
Good job man

Looks good man. Do you like it?
I would do the Gear Sector mount black and the AFG.
Good job!

The GS mount was black but I had it coated was well. I'll eventually put a FDE CTR stock on it once I get around to picking one up and also swap out the mini with the Surefire dark earth version. I'm waiting on the FDE MOE+ Grip as well.

It's a BCM upper with DD lite rail on a KAC SR-15 lower, Battlecomp, T-1 Micro on a Larue mount, Troy Buis, Surefire 6PX tactical in a Danger Close Counsulting mount, Larue handstop, BFG VCAS (thing is like 3 years old or something still works like it's brand new, sopmod stock.
Paint job is krylon ultra flat OD and tan with some textured stone paint mixed in here and there.

Oh and here's the pistol, just a G17 with a Surefire x300. Extended controls and lighter trigger. Dawson PI sights all black.
