Why in the WORLD doesn't anyone make a pepper laminate 870 stock? I know they make a lame-o thumbhole one, but a normal pepper laminate stock is the ONLY thing I would replace this one with! :D

Remington 870 "USSS" model, 14" barrel (mod choke).

The gun is a Police Magnum and comes standard with the Speedfeed stock (~14" LOP), serviceable ghost ring sights (rear from Iron Works, front unknown but has a tritium dot), Wilson 1 round magazine extension and a bright orange follower with a small finger that protrude through the Wilson extension when the magazine is fully loaded.


The following were added:

- Surefire 618 foreend
- GG&G Sling Adaptor plate and CQB Solutions sling
- Tacstar 4 round sidesaddle

I'm considering having a piece of pic rail mounted on the receiver to enable use of a Aimpoint H-1 or T-1, but the gun shoots very nicely already. Federal 8 pellet 00 buck with the flite control wad is GTG out to 20+ yards, Brenneke slugs are overlapping at 25 yards when I do my part.

Here's some updated pics of my 3gun shotgun. (FN SLP Mk1)

I've added a Nordic Components extended bolt handle and had Sam Hatfield (www.hatfieldsgunsmithing.com) install my Nordic Components large button bolt release. He also texturized my stock and fore-end in the aggressive texture. He's going to be making me a new front sight since mine is too low for slugs. With the rear sight bottomed out it'll hit 5-7" too high at 50yds using Federal reduced power Truball 1oz slugs. If it's possible he might be shortening the stock my 3/4"-1" also.

I placed 3rd overall at the Black Creek 3gun match on Saturday (three stage match). I placed 2nd on both of the stages that involved the shotgun! :D I'm shooting this thing so much better/faster than I did using a Benelli.

The folding stock looks the Remington of many years ago.

I'd shoot it before I did anything. Depending on your size, you might do better with a different length stock. I'm not a big fan of rifle sights on a SG.

I have a 1976 vintage 870P. My barrel had the front bead on the barrel and not on a base like yours. It was pretty short. The 24/7 big dot sight folks make three different big dot tritium styles that fit over your front sight. One is for bead on the barrel, one is for bead on a base like yours, and the last one is for bead on a vent rib. I had to enlarge the hole a little, then J-B Welded it on the gun. It was a big improvement for me.

My sleeve length on a dress shirt is 32" so I also added a youth stock to fit me better. If you're a 35", you should be GTG.

How new was your 870 USSS when you got it?

A guy I know works for the SOT that bought the whole lot from Remington and then resold them to SOTs and departments in several states.

I was told of the 300 some odd USSS models that all of them had been shot in some form or fashion.

I'm waiting on my paperwork to come in on mine. I've seen it at the SOT and it looks to be in very good to excellent condition.

I did notice that one of the protective sides around the rear ghost ring sight was bent a ittle, but it shouldn't affect functionality.

I think it's a decent bargain for a factory Remmy SBS with all of the add ons it has.

I organized a group buy fairly early in the offering. We didn't know that they were "used" per say and that they would be offered in "Grades" later. We did not ask for any "hand picking"

Of the ten that we bought, nine were pretty much 95% to like New, with handling/rack marks, the occasional light surface rust on the rear sight, ect. They did exhibit signs of having been "test fired"

The tenth was probably at a 85%, with a few more handling marks, being pretty dirty internally and exhibiting a burn pattern from repeated firing on the magazine extension tube.

I could not be happier with mine and everyone that has gotten theirs has been of the same opinion.

I say Old School. Strip your factory P wood, give it a goldish stain of some sort, then put about 6 coats of Tru Oil on it. Matte or Parkerized looks good with pretty wood, handgun or longgun.

I'm looking for some premium grade wood to oil finish an install on my formerly issued, now owned Wingmaster Magnum that I'm going to SBS.

I had the stock shortened and installed a Kick-Eez recoil pad. I can shoot this thing 24 hours a day now.
With the stock Benelli hard rubber recoil pad I felt every shot with Federal .00 buck.

Since I put the modded stock on I have shot 100 rounds of the same
Federal .00 buck over a 2 day period with no discomfort whatsoever.

RJ Modifications:
Move trigger & exchange for compliant parts.
Shorten barrel to 18.5 and thread. Then add brake and weld
Provide and install HK Sights

Mods made by me include:
Drill trigger guard
Enlarge and drill mag release
Drill and add a wider thumb tab on the safety, notch safety for bolt hold open
Add Fuglystick handguard. Custom made 12 in with slots for rails at 3,6,9 positions
Disassemble and powder coat in 10% black (flat)
Modify and install the SLR-95 stock to meet MA regs (not an easy project)
Towered sight and red dot. Looks odd but is really quite comfortable to use.

The bolt and release look like the work of Joey Piccinino who used to do gunsmith work on the side at Blue Ridge Arsenal back in the mid to late 90's. I think I still have my bolt and release on my Benelli that he made for me. When I get home in a week or 2 I will check.

My new 3gun blaster. I sold my Benelli M1 for $695 and bought this one for $680 brand new from Tanners on Gunbroker.

It's a 22" FN SLP Mk1. I use Briley chokes (Improved Cylinder & Light Modified), I plan to get a Skeet as well. I did a little WECSOG work to the loading port and shortened up the handguard so that I'm sure to get the shells all the way to the shell stop when reloading. It comes with 2 gas pistons a light and a heavy. Light is for 1.5oz or lighter and heavy is for 1.5oz or heavier. The light one works great with the cheap Wally World Federal bulk pack low brass 7-1/2s, I have about 400 rounds through it now with no malfunctions whatsoever. I'm using a 3gun gear side saddle and 2-shot form handguard saddle. This is probably the softest shooting 12gauge I've ever shot. With Federal Truball reduced recoil slugs it feels like you're shooting a 7.62x39mm AK if using the Light piston.
I've acquired a Browning Gold Sporting Clays piston which is made for 1-1/8oz or lighter I also got the Browning Gold 3.5" 12ga recoil spring. Supposedly these two work best together. I changed out the spring but it looked just like the one that I removed from my FN. I also now have a +1 mag extension from Nordic Components for those 'outlaw' 3gun matches I sometimes shoot where mag capacity isn't restricted.


Nice set-up. I used to have the exact same gun but sold it and bought the 18.5 inch version of the SLP instead. You are dead on about the recoil, it is very soft shooting for a 12 ga. which is one of the nice things about a gas operated shotgun over a recoil operated one. FN did a nice job of copying the design from the Browning gold and Winchester super X2 series.

Quick question for you. I have the Nordic bolt handle extension but have not been able to find a larger bolt release button. Where did you get that if you don't mind me asking?

I just finished prepping the the 870 for a class next weekend. It started as a $150 Wingmaster with 20-30% original finish. I added a 20" barrel, big dot, left hand safety, Wilson +2 mag extension and coated it in flat black Aluma-Hyde II.

thank you. i'm not 100% happy with the shotgun, i'm considering parkerizing the whole gun. also the aftermarket mossberg ghost ring sites need tweeking. considering a tritium front post, also the crappy mount on the front which was improvised since mossberg only includes back mount and front dove post.

Just added Some Scattergun Tech Trak-Lock ghost rings the front sight glows nice and bright green in low light conditions also added a 6 shot side saddle and replaced the factory spring and follower with a Scattergun tech neon green follower and wolf spring.MMM now I need to mount a Light:D

Changed the 870P up a little. I replaced the 4 shot Speed Feed stock with a "Youth" length stock from Speed Feed. The way the gun handles improved markedly.

I also installed a GGG rear sling attachment. Seems to be very well made, and all it has to do is hold the sling securely. No sharp edges either.

BFG Vickers CAS rounds things out. I'm in the process of getting an Eagle covered shell holder for the stock.

This is essentially what I'll be running in an upcomming Rob Haught class.

First day out running my #2 Saiga-12 after the addition of an MD Arms/Gunfixr 4-position adjustable gas reg and a Chaos USA tri-rail forearm. The reg allows you to "tune" the gun for reliability with a wider variety of loads than the factory 2-position device, and the Chaos rail in conjunction with a vertical foregrip completely changes the handling of the gun for the better (IMO).

The gun functioned with Remington "Gun Club" low brass (aluminum base) #7-1/2 game loads as well as with several brands of reduced recoil 00 buck on gas setting #2. Only problems were a couple failures to feed with RIO Royal 00 buck, but those were limited to one magazine (AGP 10-rounder), so the mag is the more likely culprit.

I just picked this up from Steve @ Parabelluminc.com He took it in on a trade and worked his magic on it. Nordic Works tube, Bolt Release Button, and Bolt Handle. I added a Nordic Works Barrel Clamp/Rail after the pic was taken. He refinished everthing in Cerakote OD and Graphite Black. I had an M1 years ago that I let slip away. I'll never say never, but don't wait on that call....... :)

At 25 yards with Federal Tactical Flite Control 9 Pellet 00 Buck the spread is 8 inches max and is about 1 ragged hole out to about 15 yards. It also love's Brenneke's just like my old one and got a nice clover leaf @ 50 yards.

Used M1's are going reasonably now on GB. You could pick one up and have it tricked out just the same.

here's something i'm tempted to buy; a neostead shotgun from south africa:) 12 regular rounds in a bullpup design. its got two chambers above the barrel. you could even decide which of these chambers feeds first, or alternate between both. its also got a unique pump action; you move forward, then back, not like the standard pump actions:)

Here's my Rem 870 Tactical with Knoxx stock. Added the heat shield and light (Streamlight TL-2 LED). Was gonna add the coil remote switch but found out after I bought the light that the remote switch doesn't allow you to turn the light on permanently in anyway. Only temp via the remote switch. So, I decided to leave it as is. The way it is now I can hold it temp on with my index finger while holding the fore end or push for in all the way for poerm on. I went with the knoxx shell holder instead of kind that goes on the left side of the receiver cause I like to have the shells on the right as I load them.

These few 870's I do are not something I really offer. It's usually only when it's a "do it or these negatives might just wind up at the TV station" situation :D

The front sling swivel is the one that comes from Scattergun Technologies, but I've cut the sling slot out and silver-brazed a regular sling stud onto it.

Here's the stock of that 870. They wanted the sling to be as ambi as possible. I like a sling that lets the gun hang in the proper orientation. I didn't really like the sling they used with the big, heavy, noisy clip, but........

Top is a 1950's Wingmaster with a 20" rifle sighted barrel from the 60's. Took off the nice wood and put it away and slapped on some inexpensive police wood with a nice comfy recoil pad. The original stock had a bit more drop in the comb and I couldn't get a pad that fit right to replace the rock solid original one. Sights are Meprolight.

Bottom is a Sacramento PD marked 1970's Wingmaster. I had it cleaned up a few years ago and just recently added the a newer 18" police barrel I picked up with XS sights.

Just got this Benelli about a week ago. Surefire Forend, ERT sling adapter, ZM Weapons sling. Poly-Choke II (without the vents) , XS 24/7 Tritium Standard dot front and Speedfeed IV-s with Swat Plate are on the way this week. I will post update pics. Thanks for looking.

Update- Got the Poly-Choke in Saturday and inlet the stock for the Urban/ERT sling adapter. No more nasty gap. Still waiting for front night sight. Scratched the SpeedFeed stock and plate .

Removed rubber from the butt plate, it liked to grab clothes and the 3 different buckshot I use or the 2.75" slugs aren't unbearable. 3" slugs are to much without the recoil pad and honestly even with it on. Luckily those aren't loads I use anyway. Just full power 2.75" buck and slugs.

Winchester Supreme 00 Buck 12 pellet at 1295 FPS is the only load I have tried patterning with the poly choke. I hope to have pics of patterning with 000, #4 and #1 buck up soon.

Update- Got the Poly-Choke II back from being parkerized.

The stocks are the 13" LOP from Speedfeed (IV-S). I replaced the buttpad with a SWAT plate (also from speedfeed) that reduces the LOP by another inch.

The barrel was cut for me by GunCat (Steve @ Rose Action Sports) and threaded for remchokes (had the saiga barrel threaded as well). I can PM his number or you can PM him here or Ar15.com

Historically interesting, but NOT as effective as modern methods.

If I have my referances correct, the A&W was also offered on the SPAS-12 and I have seen them on a H&K tac shotgun also.

Of the three only the A&W unit was designed to also be able to fire slugs. I have not done so with mine yet, but I have enough referacnes on it that I would be ok with doing so. The diverters realy seem to have had a lot of believers in the 70's no doubt because of use by the SEALs. Buy the mid-80's them seem to have disappaired for the most part. But then again #4 is preety commonly referacned as the go to shotgun load, bird shot was often referanced as being "less lethal" ammo, and skip shooting less lethals and bird shot was also broadly supported.
