This past Feb was the first time I had the opportunity to handle and fire an AR
Shortly afterward, I decided to get one and set about doing a lot of reading and research. After a few wrong decisions/purchases, long story short, this is what I have ended up with.

http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/yy90/malcontent_2009/DSC02177.jpg?t=1254101804

http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/yy90/malcontent_2009/DSC02164.jpg?t=1252774599

Don't want to bore you with all the parts/pieces, but if you have questions, I'll be happy to answer them..
I am trying out the Scar heat panel on the rail. If I like it, I'll buy more.

A huge THANKS! to rob_s for putting together 'The Chart' it was a big help; and to Pat Rogers for all those AARs that I have read over the past 6 months with what fails/works;

Hello, I am new to this forum, I like the threads and thouught I would post some of my work. This SP01 is an old timer, at least the upper is the lower is DPMS with old grip and stock. I used Brownells pivot pin adaptor to match the upper and lower receivers.

Thanks, its the smoke in the air as well as off the casing that really make it work, and thats something I had no control over. The other obvious factor is the shooter, and it takes someone who knows how to run a gun for me to end up with decent images. A rookie shooter would have ruined the image.

In short, I had little to do with this shot other than being there as a shutter monkey. :)

Nicely done. My side gig turned into a second full time job, but it keeps me from working the typical cop offduty jobs, and gives me something solid to do when I retire.

I could retire now but I would be better off if I can push it out about 5 years. I hope to keep up with the tactical painting and gunsmithing work. My website is www.threewolves.com if you want to check it out. Here is another one that I did two years ago. This piece went to the Sandbox with Shadow6.

I really like that setup, I also have a CD M4LE and I have been trying to decide between the Troy drop in, or spring for the Daniel Defense Omega. How does the finish match the CD? I will probably go with the Troy, I am having a hard time justifying the extra $100 for the DD myself

I used to HATE training in the rain back when I actually got paid for it. But now I don't mind it so much, especially when it keeps the temp nice and cool.

It's the new BCM Gunfighter Charging Handle (the smaller Mod 04 version). I like it a LOT! It pulls straight back to the rear, instead of veering off to the left side like my PRI did. I highly recommend it!

i pitch a little tent when i get to go shoot in the rain and mud. two weeks ago i saw this thunderstorm from hell comming in, so i went to the range. lol.. worked out nice cause nobody else was there, so i was able to do 200yd dashes up and down the firing line with all my gear on, pullups and pushups in the mud with out looking at me like ima a crack head.

Well, the DD Omega is free-floating while the Troy drop-in is not. The Troy MRF series is great for Free-float if you want to go Troy. Check Grant's G&R Tactical website and see if they have any open-box sale item rails left. I got my free-float Troy MRF rails for about $180, a heck of a deal!:D

Thanks, I will definatly check them out. Turns out the place I put the Daly M4 LE on layaway accidently put a SW MP 15a away, they are going to see if they can get another DM4 LE for me. If not its no biggie the MP 15A has the better Troy sights and is a little cheaper, the barrel is only a 1x9 and it has a carbine buffer, but I am only planing on shooting paper and the buffer is an easy fix.

Thanks, I was trying something new. The second pic is probably the best pic out of all 200+ I took yesterday, and it was an accident. I think I'm finally beginning to figure out this lighting thing.

Yes, it's my BCM 11.5" upper with URX Rail and Triple Tap. I got rid of the LWRC upper about 4-5 months ago, as it just was NOT for me. But I had already registered the lower as an SBR, so I'll be keeping it forever.:)

Ok i'll probably get bashed for this because I'm sure i need to go to a photo forum for these questions but here it goes. Stickman and Trust, what lens are you guys using to get these photos. I have a Canon 30D w/ a 28-135, but can't seem to get the close ups or angles that you guys are getting and still get the whole gun in the picture.

With a 30D and 28-135 lens, I could duplicate every photo you have seen from me. Much of my older work was shot with a 20D and Tamron 28-70 (and I had no shortage of published with using that combination). Your question is kind of broad, it sounds like you need to play around a little more with layout and camera angles. Then again, so do I. :)

Thanks. I'll definitely consider that.
The Eotech is a tad too far forward. I will move it back a few notches. I placed it there so there was plenty of room for the magnifier, but it can still stand to move back a bit. I also don't like the battery portion of the optic being so close to the heat of the barrel. I don't know if that can actually DO anything, but it sure doesn't hurt to have the optic backed up a bit.

Wow pretty crazy looking, clean yet sophisticated.

The very first AR15's had bakelite pistol grips, carbon fiber handguards and buttstocks. I gave the pistol grip a faux bakelite finish, and the buttstock is a USGI pre-A1 variation. The upper, lower and charging handle are NODAK mfg, the barrel and other upper parts are USGI. I still need to pick up a chrome BCG from young mfg. It's like a spacegun. Orion arms did an even better looking one with a top charging handle not too long ago, but it had a lot more custom work done to it and parts sourced.

Here's an original.

I can't imagine just how hot that pencil-thin barrel must have gotten under a sustained high rate of fire!

Also, and I might just come off sounding like a jackass here, was carbon fiber available back when that AR-15 was developed? I thought that carbon fiber was "invented" just a decade or so ago... although I actually have no idea, I'm just assuming here. I would've thought the buttstock and handguard were comprised of fiber glass or some form(s) of plastic.

I would've thought the buttstock and handguard were comprised of fiber glass or some form(s) of plastic.

No prob, and I'm pretty sure you're right, I think it was fiberglass.

Lots of people use lightweights without issue, they balance better. I read documents relating to the A1 to A2 switchover that indicated people generally scored better with A1's. It was chalked up to the A1 sight post, but my guess is the weight difference helped too.

This one was just built for anti-aluminum can duty.

Did you paint the buttstock?
CavArms makes an A1 length buttstock in Foliage Green.

That one is an A2 that came from Rock River Arms.

Oh no doubt. I love my super light KAC SR-15 E3! I shoot very well with it, I just have to wear gloves if I'm burning through ammo doing some training because the thinner barrel profile really heats the URX II handguard up! But the much lighter weight of that smaller barrel is worth the extra heat in my opinion, as it allows me to run the SR-15 almost as easily as one of my SBRs in a carbine class, because it weighs just 3 ounces more than my 11.5" SBR that's setup in the same configuration.

Correction, brother... it's NEVER a bad combination!;) Great looking blaster, man!

DPMS sells the tubes. Would have went with a clark tube which is a few oz lighter, but they clark tubes are gray in color.

There's another company that makes a variety of carbon fiber tubes, I think they're called hyperform.

10-11-09, 23:15
That's cool, as long as it works for you. Is there any particular reason for going with that over a drop leg 6004 style? IMO that would make your draw much more natural, and if you ever decided to run a plate carrier or chest rig your draw would be unimpeded.

On a side note I HATE YOU! I get more and more jealous of that SBR every time I see it. One day... one day.

Titleist
10-11-09, 23:57
Simple answer is that I'm used to drawing from my belt, and specifically Safariland doesn't make a holster for the M&P Pro + X300. I occasionally run plates using an RRV or RBAV and as long as I keep my right side slick (no pouches) and don't block my holster there's no problem with my draws. Right now I'm just waiting for that ICE belt, which should make my belt kit damn near perfect.

Sorry for inspiring hate! :D

That'd be a bit of a drive from SoCal. But the offer is tempting.

And Safariland does make that stuff for that combo, I have one for my M&P and x300. They can do pretty much any combination you want by special order. Give them a call and they will hook you up. Turn around time pretty damn good as well.
