Needs a sling and a light or its a no go.

A sling, sure, but a light? How to mount it?

There are any number of options you can use to mount a light on your AR

1. Get a mount that attaches to your front sight post

2. replace the hand guards with a rail system

#1 is you least expensive route but if your like most here you will be stung with the ultimate bug and want to super tactical your rifle out with all the bells and wistles that are avaliable.

Agreed. If you don't use your AR as a fighting tool, you could forget the light. But some of us use them for home defense and/or duty.

I basically agree on the electronics. I personally can do without, but the light is mandatory.

BTW While my experience may not be as much as some I was a MEUSOC qualified Marine who spent 3 months in the African sandbox called Somalia and I got the tee shirt to prove it (doesnt fit well anymore.... I think it shrunk)
We didnt have optics/lights/lazers in 94 but Im sure we would have used them if we would have had them
all Im saying is you can get along without them

You fixed 99.99% of Bushmaster's problems and have a practically minded, utilitarian setup. Me like:D.

Thank you. I bought the rifle in '04 during the ban. It was a package deal that included the Aimpoint and the ARMS BUIS. When I got it, I got it with the Stubby entry stock. It was either that, or the fixed adjustable. Here it was when I got it:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/lagadelphia/fullbush.jpg

I've been making changes to it to suit my needs and to make it as reliable as possible. The flash hider is probably the last thing on my list to do that is within my budget. I'm just having a hard time laying out ~$100 to have it done. For me, it kind of falls into the "want" category.

I have other "wants" that are sexier or more "fun". Like the stripped lower I just got and a LPK to go with it. I try to keep my eye on the ball and focus on what is more important but sometimes I give into the "wants" :) Of course a second working lower and another BCG would ensure that, outside of a kaboom, I could keep my rifle in functional condition until a repair could be made.

I spec'd this one up for a friend who wanted advice on his first AR. He supplied the cash, and I ordered what I felt would be a ultra solid, light weight, top quality carbine.

Here's the specs:

*LMT Defender 2000 lower with SOPMOD stock & LMT 2-stage trigger/KNS pins

*Noveske N4 Basic upper w/Vortex FH permanently attached to the 14.5" barrel

*Daniel Defense Omega 7.0 rail (What a breeze to install! Literally took me 9mins to install the Omega rail)

*Aimpoint Comp M4S/LaRue Tactical QD mount combo

*Surefire G2L w/Malkoff M60 high output LED module/Z49 clicky tailcap/Vtac light mount

*LaRue "F.U.G." vertical grip

*Vtac quick adjust 2-point sling

*TangoDown rail covers (Cutting the rail covers to fit everything perfectly was the most time consuming part of the entire "build" )

*MagPul M.I.A.D. pistol grip enroute from Brownell's (I Cant stand the Ergo grip that the lower came with)

Also not pictured:

*MagPul P-mags (x10)

*LaRue discreet soft carrying case

Everything included, it came out to right aroung $3k (shipping included)

I would say he did OK for his first AR

Everyone needs to start posting all the specs on their rifles! Yes, some are quite obvious, but some are not.
CL,
Which N4 is this? Is it a 16" bbl, midlength? It appears so.
I'm currently trying to decide if I want a 9" or 10" VIS on my Noveske N4 middy, but cannot find the pics of both VIS uppers with the 16" bbl.
I think Noveskes website shows the 10", but I'll have to check again.
Which one is this? 16" Low Pro I assume?

Also, is that a Vickers sling? Looks a bit wide, but not sure???

Ooopps! Sorry about that, kind of a "gun shy" here in mentioning what I have. . .Okay, from Noveske Rifleworks' online site:

Noveske N4 Light Recce Low-Profile 16" (N4lr)

16.1" Cold Hammer Forged Barrel, 1 in 7" twist, 5.56mm
--Made of Mil Spec M249 Machine Gun barrel steel, with heavy M249 Chrome Lining,
(appx. 2 times as thick as an M4 or M16)
--Extended Feed Ramps
--Mil Spec Phosphate finish
--MP HP tested with certification
--Mid-Length gas system, no M203 notch
--Shot peened and MP tested bolt
--Properly staked carrier key
--Auto carrier
--Mil-Spec receiver extension, staked
--H Buffer
--Vltor Carbine buttstock [swapped for Magpul UBR]
--Tango Down pistol grip [swapped for Magpul MIAD Modular Grip - Full]
--Flat-top upper receiver
--11" free floated handguard w/ 1913 rails
--Low-profile gas block pinned to barrel
--Flip-up front and rear sights [added the LMT Front Site]
--Smith Vortex [Bold Italics, mine]
--One 30 rd mag included [it did come with only 1 (USGI?) magazine--but in addition to it, Magpul PMags]

Also added the BOBRO SHORT Vertical Fore Grip w/ SACL

Also, is that a Vickers sling? Looks a bit wide, but not sure???
Urban-E.R.T. US2 UrbanSentry Two Point/One Point Hybrid Sling is what's pictured. I'm trying this one out and liking it so far, more so than Gear Sector's GS-2P because of the quick conversion (@30 sec) on the US2 Hybrid from 2p to 1P if one chooses to do so.

Looking forward to trying out the Vickers VCAS also.

Enjoy!

Hey John123,
I see that is a Noveske build, but here are a few questions:

1. Did you have John Noveskes guy Gunkote it in FDE? I know John has a guy who takes items home and Gunkotes them for a small additional fee.
Tell me if the following assumptions about your build are correct:

-Noveske 16.1 Recon build, SS bbl (NOT Chrome "N4" series), VLTOR 12" VIS???

Is that correct?
Finally, what was the turnaround time on that rifle, from the time you ordered it, until you received it? Thanks.

Check out this link it should provide you with the info you need. Nothing was purchased direct from Noveske.
It is not the N4 series its a stainless steel barrel. And yes it is a a 12 in vis system To Coat the Vis my guy had to order a tool to remove the barrel.

Suicide,
WHO built that VLTOR upper? You perhaps?
IF YOU did, then did the M4 ramps in the VLTOR upper line up with the bbl extensions M4 ramps?
If not, then did you have to dremel them down flush?

What bbl is that you used? Spec request please! Thanks!

Like you, I too rarely ever get ANY blowback with a regular charging handle, much less when using a PRI Gasbuster...
Thanks for posting man!

Paul-

Thanks, your enthusiasm is much appreciated! It was ME WHO built the upper ;)

The Vltor upper used to be the home of a WOA SS 16" middy barrel.

I had bought a BCM 11.5" upper for an SBR. I ended up selling off the WOA barrel to one friend and the BCM receiver to another for an M4 build.

I installed the 11.5" barrel into the Vltor myself.

DD Omega Carbine length
CMT BCG from Grant
MP tested bolt
CMT charging handle (yes, not a Gas Buster, just the PRI latch)
Vltor front sight gas block combo
PWS G5 mount

I had no issues with the ramps in the extension aligning themselves with the upper. It's a quality upper and quality barrel, never needed to worry.

I think maybe I can attribute the Vltor to be partially responsible for keeping gases at bay. I don't know what else it would be. I do get a little "oozing" of oils from the back of the suppressor but nothing major. I don't even get anything out of the roll pin holes that are so "awful" and such a "weakness" of the G5. But then again, there are no more roll pins and the parts are tightened so that the holes in the inconel spacer do not line up with the body or mount portion.

Possibly a LT mount for the TA33 is in my future but that's about it. I'm very happy with this rifle- it's at the stage I've wanted to be for years now.

Can't beat a suppressed SBR especially when you don't need to reach out to anything smaller than a man sized target at 300m.

That is a beauty. That's kind of my long-term vision for mine too. (My Noveske's on its way!)

My G/F has her TA33-8 on a LaRue QD mount and it works very well for her. It has retained its zero even when she lets me pop it off there to try other optics when my rifle's not handy. A quality solution, no doubt.

How do you like the CTR? She's thinking about one of those to replace the standard stock on her M&P15T.

Do you think a gas buster has any value to an N4 Light/Low-Pro without a suppressor? Charging handle is one part I've never given much care to, except to find one with a big enough grip that my lefty-self can work it.

Alright, enough questions. I'm just going to stare at the rifle now.

SuicideHz

I've got absolutely no reason to want a GB at this point. You won't need one on an insuppressed gun unless your ammo has a lot of ammonia in it. I had some IMI lie that a long time ago...

The CTR is great. No complaints...

Do you think a gas buster has any value to an N4 Light/Low-Pro without a suppressor? Charging handle is one part I've never given much care to, except to find one with a big enough grip that my lefty-self can work it.

Alright, enough questions. I'm just going to stare at the rifle now.

your sling is on backwards

I've seen the adjustment on either end, its user preference really.

BushmasterFanBoy,

Please tell me how you can use a Blue Force Vickers (VCAS) sling mounted backwards?

From the pics you can tell John123 is a right handed shooter.

Applying your logic that the VCAS can be mounted with the Quick Adjust at "either end".......If the VCAS sling is mounted backwards (with the Quick Adjust Buckle closed), and the shooter wanted to open the the Quick Adjust portion of the VCAS sling, the Quick Adjust Buckle would be located in the area of the shooters right chest / right collar bone (depending if his rear attachment point was at the receiver end plate or the rear of the stock).

So in order to adjust the sling, the shooter would have to take his left arm and put it behind his back, reach up over his right shoulder with his left hand, grab the Quick Adjust Tail with his left hand, and pull the Quick Adjust Buckle over his right shoulder and across his back toward his lower left back.

This task is extreemly inefficient and unpractical at best..... and physically impossible for most.

I have noticed a pattern with your posts. Most of them lack anything that resembles common sense, first hand experience, or nutritional value.

When you post things that are based on theory or regurgitate something you read on the internet and pass it off as your first hand experience here, you do this board and it's members a great dis-service. As someone may actually take what you say as sound advise and end up wasting time and / or money based on the incorrect info you post.

Your lane is a very narrow lane. You should learn where your lane begins and where your lane ends and stay within the confines of your lane and quit trying to pass yourself off as some kind of Subject Matter Expert.

thanks Paul. Forum member Diz made the rig, called the Minuteman/Alleycat; and sadly it looks like he's taking time off/not taking orders for the time being clicky (http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=15707). I was fortunate enough to place my order when I did...

No, it just happened to be the mag I had in the range bag when I took the picture.

Although in the past I have tried to separate ammo by using magpuls or ranger plates, I found it was too confusing, especially when I would go through a class and have to shoot 1000+ rounds in a few days.

Yes it is, it's the now obsolete KNS gen 1 non-rotating trigger/ hammer pins (.154" dia.) which I got about three years ago.

KNS Precision switched to the stronger design gen 2 because the hollow hammer pins gets broken when used by full auto 9mm carbines.

They're hard to find now but maybe there are a few dealers out there that still have some in stock.

The Elcans; C79, Spectre DR, and M145, (as seen configuration) are not that much heavier than the Acog. However along with the minimal weight addition comes far superior optics. However that is another discussion.

Yes, the M145 has a 5.56 reticule, and that is what is in this tube. That's what we are here for, is it not, to learn new stuff??

And "Hello" Capt Obvious, yes this carbine is heavy. I didn't put the picture up trying to pretend this is my duty rifle or anything of that nature. Rather than putting up another one similar to the other 285 pages of pictures, I didn't think there were that many of this manufacturer or with these accessories. I tried to have a little diversity, spice of life, kind of thing.

I would beg to differ on that one ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. I've read great stuff about the Pmags (and saw a video torture test of it). I'll probably pick one up at the next local gun show to see how I like it. I've already got enough mags (more than I need), so I'll decide later if to get them or not. I guess more mags now wouldn't hurt if another AWB/restriction comes in later and sales are restricted again.

Still have 2 guns in the works.....I have a Stag Arms and RRA lower that are both back at the factory due to the pistol grip screw hole being out of spec (to the rear).

I love that Armalite Middy at the top I have pretty much that setup but I use the TA31F ACOG the TA11's are ok but they are just bigger and add more wieght for no reason.. I might look into the new TA33's they are pretty much the same power of the TA11 but are smaller and alot lighter.. but I still just dont think you can beat the TA31F's you have on your colts.. Small not to heavy and 4 power.. I love mine.. you really have alot of nice gun's there I am not really a colt fan but still very nice.

The advantage of the TA11 over the TA31 is more than just size and weight. The TA11 has much more generous eye relief.

Eye relief aids in finding targets quicker (when engaging multiple targets at various distances), getting on target quicker (because head position is not as critical), etc.

I have owned both the TA01NSN (since 1998) and the TA31 (since they were released in 200 / 2001?). I prefer the TA31 as I'm quicker with BAC (if I had to choose between the two models). You can get a little more accuracy (depending on what type of targets you are shooting and at what distance) out of the TA01NSN due to the reticle.

The only thing I don't like about the TA01NSN and the TA31 is the short eye relief. Not a big issue if all your shooting will be done from a bench, but the short eye relief on the TA01NSN and TA31 really "expose" themselves when running and gunning an shooting from non traditional positions. Note the distance from my eye to the back of the ACOG in the following pics:

Larger version of above photo. (http://demigodllc.com/photo/PRM-2007.07/medium/D461_9051_img.jpg)

The barricade is so low I have cant my carbine just to be able to see the target. I would have been much slower and in a much more uncomfortalbe position if I was using a TA31 with 1.5" eye relief. Just another example of how important eye relief can be:
http://demigodllc.com/photo/PRM-2008.05/smaller/D462_6385_img.jpg

Due to the short eye relief on the TA01NSN and TA31, I found it hard to locate targets down range when shooting at several targets at varying distances down range. Having shot the same courses of fire with both the TA31 and TA11, I found the TA11 much quicker in locating targets down range:

(steel targets are positioned from 175 yards to 425 yards)

(same targets, closer pic)
http://demigodllc.com/photo/PRM-2006.11/smaller/D100_5261_img.jpg

My preference is for the TA11.

but I still just dont think you can beat the TA31F's you have on your colts.. Small not to heavy and 4 power..

The pictures you quoted were taken in 2005. I sold all my TA31's. I haven't owned a TA31 since early 2006. In some law enforcement circles, this is what they would refer to as "A clue" ;)

And for those, 'night moves,' here she is outfitted with a NightOptics 241 NVS ("A" tube - mounted on ITS own ARMS #19 mount as well) for good measure. :D

Quick question for you, why the riser on the 557? It looks like its extremely high.

Well, it's only on an ARMS #19 mount, which does add SOME height, but I WANTED to be able to pop it on and off, without losing zero - in case I wanted to swap it for NVS (or, mount it in tandem WITH NVS).

Since I took that picture though, I decided to actually keep my NVS with my PTR-91! I probably should pop it off, but I've been too lazy to rezero it without the mount. :o 200 yards is a L-O-N-G range shot in MY hood, so it seemed to make more sense to keep the NVS with my LONG-range rifle, and keep this one set up for CQB/home defense

It is.
Their mag for the M261 kit works great with the olympic kit.

I originally wanted a Ciener kit, but after hearing what that guy was telling ppl, and not being able to find one, I looked into the oly kit. It was cheaper, available, and the few reviews I read were good. I like it. For plinking/having fun, it's great.

LWRC M6A2 16in 556, Troy Sights, Surefire M600C Scout-Light, Tango Down Vert Grip and Covers, Aimpoint Micro T1 in ADM SOCOM Mount, L5 Mag, Magpul MIAD, LMT SOPMOD stock, Vicker's Sling, MI Sling Mount. I own a lot of rifles but this is by far my favorite! The LWRC has been the best running rifle I've ever fired and I've had ZERO problems with it (ONE time it didnt lock back on the last round with a WORN OUT and beat up HK Mag). The T1 rocks. Lots of room to see around it. The L5 Clear mag I have only one of and testing it. Seems good. Wonder if a Magpul follower will work in it? Pmags I love I have 37 of them! http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u273/welchtactical/huh006.jpg

The sling is mounted directly into the QD hole in the LMT. You dont have to add any hardware to the newer ones. The older SOPMOD I have on another rifle I have to add the KAC sling thing to attach a sling.

Nice set up on both rifles. What optics are you going to run on each? Why did you want two AR that are very similar? Are you going to set up each for a different purpose?

Thanks. Those are all great questions. I wanted to see what the fuss was about the middy. Also, the 14.5" was supposed to help me evaluate techniques for permanently attaching flash hiders. I have access to a very good machine shop and they allow me to tinker on my own projects and one machinist in particular has been itching to teach me how to TIG weld.

Lastly, I have a lot of family that would like to go shooting with me but lack the disposable income to delve into this hobby. Since I have no kids of my own and relatively low overhead, I get to buy the cool toys that they get to borrow. I want a loaner rifle that I won't have to fix or clear every couple of rounds. My dad once had 2 1911s, one that he liked to shoot, and one he liked to loan out. After about a year of owning the loaner and clearing a stovepipe in about 1 out of 3 shots, that gun was never seen again by my eyes.

I haven't decided which will be my main rifle, but they will diverge in purpose eventually. I'm probably going to run the ML2 on the middy and irons for a while on the LMT. I really haven't decided on what optics to run on the carbine. I like aimpoints because they are a little more astigmatism friendly than Eotechs I've seen and seem to be rock solid.

I've never seen Colt offer a selector with the milled "arrow/pointer/indicator", which shows the status the FCG.
Did you replace the selector lever, or is that a Colt piece???

Also, the 14.5" was supposed to help me evaluate techniques for permanently attaching flash hiders. I have access to a very good machine shop and they allow me to tinker on my own projects and one machinist in particular has been itching to teach me how to TIG weld.

Assuming you've already pinned/welded the vortex... Got pics of the weld?

Great looking LMT - I'll be getting the exact same set-up from G&R shortly.

Here is the weld, I'm not sure who Grant had do the pinning. The brown gunk is cardboard dust. I'm happy with the results.
http://web.mac.com/supermarkus/iWeb/Site/AR-15%20Stuff_files/IMG_1731.jpg

I think when I do the pinning, I won't make as much of an effort to cover up the weld and since I cannot use a silencer in this state, I probably won't do much grinding. We'll see.

Congrats on your first AR. It looks like your rear sight is too far forward and you may want to stake your receiver end plate so the castle nut stays put.

edit: scratch that, your rear sight is fine.

Here is my first (and currently only) AR build. I spent quite a bit of time researching and asking questions before deciding on the parts for my purposes.

Details as follows:

Stag- upper and lower
CMT- receiver extension, carbine buffer and spring
CMT- bolt carrier assembly, staking looks good (has blue insert, will most likely change)
Ergo grip
RRA- 2 stage LPK
CMMG- 16" mid-length chrome 1:7 & A2 flash hider
CMMG- handguards
YHM- front and rear irons
Magpul CTR & rubber butt pad
Blackhawk sling and Discreet case
Mags- CProducts and D&H with green followers

To add when funds available:
Rails, possibly Daniel Defense
Optic, Aimpoint or PFI Special Ops Auto
Vertical foregrip and possibly a light

The castle nut is not staked, I'll get around to that as well.

On order:
Magpul XTM rail panels (I think they have to grow the plastic from seeds - it's been a month)

but for the world class support their staff gave me. They not only tolerated and happily answered my endless questions and issues,
but sent me a beautiful rifle despite that!

well it’s finally finished! … and after starting this ‘Reto’ish’ project almost six months ago; all of the parts finally came together to form the carbine in the picture(s) below … and I’m going to call it an AKR15 because of the uniqueness of the barrels chambering being in 5.45x39mm

if you don't want to, or can't pin it, you could dogpoint the flat for a set screw then stake the screw. or you could put two set screws per hole. those are two very secure ways of affixing the GB

Any good machine shop can do it.
In fact, if you go buy or borrow a cheap drill press, you can do it in about 60 seconds. All you need to do is make sure you drill it in the right spot (check out how a FSB is drilled), and then of course make sure you use a .125" drill if you are using a stock Colt taper pin.
If you fully explain what you need (or better yet, SHOW them a pinned FSB), then ANY machine shop will do it for you.
If you are lucky, and the guys in the machine shop like guns, they'll probably do it for free and not even charge you...
Just find a small shop that does a lot of one-offs...

'Glad you like it..! 'Truth is though; I'll be taking her apart tomorrow... The Left side of the D. D. 9.5 is warped...
They offered to have me send the upper over for the swap, but I prefer to work my own...

Good luck w/ the build Sir..!

Hey ERH, how hard is it getting US parts & accessories over there?

(Specifically in regard to getting around our export restrictions like ITAR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITAR))

Nice toys!

As for me... Getting U.S. Parts in Georgia is easy..! Lol..!
Swissgun is the guy to ask... I don't know HOW he would be getting them
unless the trade w/ Switzerland is unrestricted...

E! :D

I'd like to know myself..! :)

ITAR does not apply to most Western European contries if I am not mistaken. If it does then I am sure that the approval process is a rubber stamp. You would be amazed at the amount of U.S made stuff in the gun stores in Switzerland and Germany. I went to a gun store in a small town near Basel and it was unreal. M60's in racks, AK47's w/ under barrel grenade launchers, M16A1's, Uzi's, suppressors galore.....it was awesome.

I wish I had taken the time to check out that sort of stuff back when I was last there... I was busy chasin' beer n skirt though... THAT was GOOD TOO..! ;)
