I just don't understand adding a handguard over a handguard. I can't see any real benefit unless you really like bulk and extra weight.... as little weight as it may be, it's still more.

The two long metal side rails and screws are deleted before the plastic handguards are added. It leaves a much better surface and the weight exchange isn't bad.

On the one hand, I like to see people doing something different, but I have to agree with the other two posters in that I'd sure like to hear more about the why and the how that led to the above.

Are the handguards from the ACR? What free-float handguard system is underneath?

I don't need all of the railed surface. They mount up solid and feel much better. I end up liking the gun much more once they've had these added. I've been swamped with PMs asking how to do the mod.

Since you're not using any of the rail space except for the Magpul AFG, why not just use a Magpul stock?

I don't think that the magpul hand guards would work on a pws upper.

It seems like the instructions that came with mine said to put the pin with the threads in the trigger, and the other one is the hammer pin.

I have a quick question regarding the KAC t-1 cap. I just recently purchased one as well and I tried to screw it in pretty hard, but it does not go in all the way like the factory cap. There is always this little bit of space exposing just ever so slightly the water sealing rubber. Does this happen to you or anyone else as well?

That's how it's supposed to be. Yours might even be a hair tighter than mine. The cap holds 2 batteries as well, so make sure you follow the instructions (don't wanna ruin the optic)

http://www.knightarmco.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=87

"Battery Cap for Scope Ring Mount Assembly (Aimpoint Mount) It is made to hold x2 batteries made for the Aimpoint sight. You need to make sure you put x1 battery in upside down so you do not short out the sight. "

cool thanks! Ya I did put two battery in, but just want to make sure that the space is suppose to be there. I didn't want to over tighten it, so thought I ask.

Thanks

Decided to put the middy on a weight loss program. Dropped the Redi-Mod, removed the KAC hand stop and mounted the sling straight to the rail and replaced the fixed Larue rear with a MBUS. I am thinking about a DD front sight to replace the LMT and a Noveske end plate instead of the ASAP.

IWC might be the option for you then... http://www.impactweaponscomponents.com/category/mount-n-slot/weapon-control-mount/

You will still have to do something for a forward sling mount but their hand stop setup is pretty damn slick. I have also seen guys mill down a KAC hand stop to make something similar.

Easy would be doing it yourself. Taking the time to take it to a 'gunshop' which 97% of the time turns out being a huge pain in the ass and 63% you'll end up wishing you would have done it yourself and 49% of the time you'll end up just doin it yourself and 100% chance you'll just save the time and do it yourself next time.

Easier said than done with having access to the proper tool for the job.
I don't feel that purchasing the proper tool will suffice a one time job.

Wormydog1724
07-31-11, 22:32
Surely there's somebody semi close to you with the 'right tool' and could show you how to use it? How do you know it's a one time deal? You'll never buy another AR and you'll never want to change an end plate or buffer tube ever again? Or you'll never want to help a friend out with his buffer tube or end plate? Having a stock wrench has made me some good friends and put plenty of beers in my belly. I see it as an investment. But to each their own or whatever.

Awesome!

I did use sponge - natural sponges from a craft store cut up into little chunks. Used a combo of rustoleum and krylon that I could find locally (might try Aervoe on the next one) Started with a base coat of rustoleum camouflage khaki followed by stripes of krylon Italian olive. Then sponged olive over the khaki and khaki over the olive. Over the whole thing I sponged rustoleum camo dark earth, army green & a little bit of krylon pebble.

IMO the IWC handsto (http://www.impactweaponscomponents.com/product/weapon-control-mount/)p is a much better option on the TRX extreme rails. No need to add a rail section as they direct mount to the rail (saves weight). More comfortable to grip as well w/o the rail section. The only downside is the position of the holes on the rail limit where it can be positioned (more of an issue for the Troy version than the VTAC).

ETA - Wayneard3413 beat me to it.

That's not the regular set up I roll with on that rifle. It usually sports an H1 in a DD mount and a Magpul RVG. I had it that way for accuracy testing today. There's a thread detailing the findings in GD.

Got a tracking number for the Burris MTAC that I ordered from SWFA and decided to take a picture of the AR before I mounted the scope on it.
Horrible picture, taken with a iPhone with horrible lighting.

Gotta order a LaRue LT-104 tomorrow...

I had bought a Pelican 1720, which is great for travel and rock f'n solid, but I find myself wanting something more compact. To that end, I was looking at the Larue Covert cases. Just this morning I was thinking about seeing if I could dig up a pic of it in blue.

Looks good, I may have to cough up even more money to Larue...

Hey everyone...finally got validated so i thought I'd make my intro post a picture of my first rifle.

I've only shot an AR once, me and my dad rented one and put a couple of boxes through it and i was hooked. I decided to put one together while I wait for my Ed Brown Special Forces to come in sometime around Oct/Nov..

Specs:
BCM blem lower - Geissele SSA-E, Ergo grip on its way. stickin with the m4 stock just gonna add a promag recoil pad to it.
BCM 18" SS410 upper with 15" MI handguard
BCM Gunfighter mod4 charging handle
Palmetto State Armory full-auto BCG (ordered and waiting for it to show up)
MBUS Gen 2 sights for now, gonna order a Burris TAC30 1-4x soon hopefully..
All that's left besides the scope is a Harris S-BRM..

Put it together without the charging handle and BCG, but it still looks good to me..even with the terrible lighting..

I'm really a newbie in the AR world so I'm in the very beginning of what appears to be a steep learning curve. You've eased my mind a little, so I guess my first step is to trash the front sight and get a railed gas block. Is a gunsmith necessary to replace it?? Do you have a supplier that you deal with for AR parts and accessories? Crap, if all those weapons are yours, I'm jealous. My collection is small and varied. I gained respect for the AK platform in Nam, so I bought one and modified it a tad. I also own a G3 that sort of just came to me for adoption at the very right price. So now I can litter the range with 5.56, 7.62X39 and 7.62X51mm brass. As soon as I learn how to post a picture on this forum, as opposed to an attachment, I'll post some shots of my other toys. Thanks again.

1st post, so I guess a little history is warranted. 65 year old former Jarhead with 2 tours in Nam. Never carried the "little black rifle" even when offered the option because I loved and trusted the M14. I finally allowed the experience and advice of a multi tour sandbox vet sway me. Without asking for specifics I went looking for a name brand and a price. Thought I did good with the S&W M&P and the price was right, BUT, now I'm not so sure. #1 I didn't get the gas block I wanted and the fact that there is no dust cover or forward assist concerns me a little. I'm also reading about 1 in 9 and 1 in 7 twist rifling and this rifle has 1 in 8, don't know if that is good bad or indifferent. The rifle is a sweet shooter with 55gr FMJ ammo and I'm sure it shoots much better than these old eyes will allow. Guess I'm just asking you guys who obviously know bunches more than I do for your opinion or any experiences you may have had with this particular S&W!!! Tried to attach a picture, not sure I was successful.

Nice looking gun. 1:8 twist is ideal for heavier projectiles. Nothing wrong with it at all.

You can always change out your gas block.

The lack of dust cover and F/A is common among "sporter models"
Not crucial, but I prefer them.

I am new here and this is my first post...I will have the pics of my ARs posted shortly....I have my second one on order and am putting together my third.
But I had a question, I saw a DD carbine on the first page here and saw a "connector" on the pins for the trigger group that I am not familiar with. I have just recently gotten the "AR-virus" so I still have a lot of learning to do. I would like to give a preemptive thank you for all of the help (I have gotten a good deal before I even joined the site).

I think you're talking about the KNS anti-rotation pins. Do a quick search for them and I'm sure you'll get more than enough info. Pic thread:

Finally got Optics on my rifle!!!

I got my LaRue LT104 Mount today and got the Burris MTAC mounted and aligned on the BCM. I love this optic, nice and clear and the reticule is very easy to see and put on target. Going to the range of Friday and going to sight it in and hopefully go look for some hogs to kill.

The MTAC and LaRue mount where early b-day presents to myself since I turn 21 next week on the 17th.... can't wait! :dance3: Already have the pistol I plan on buying bookmarked.

Just curious, why did you go with a Plumcrazy lower?

I am going to try one for a dedicated .22lr upper. I would never trust one on a centerfire. Also wish they would fix the retarded triggerguard. After their initial marketing attempts, I can't take that guy or the company seriously. Some people are better left behindthe scenes of a company.
Is that a fake eotech?

But anyways.

I think its a 551 with the hood removed or its fake. I know what you mean about not taking him serious, it was a joke. I would do a conversion in .22 for my 8 year old, thats about it

Well, here is my first AR....I have had it since 2004 and have just recently got the bug for them....I have an KAC SR-15E3 coming and am soon ordering a Noveske 10.5 SBR....
This is a DPMS AP4 with Vltor E-Mod stock and Mil-spec buffer/tube, Midwest industries SPLP flip-up BUIS, with Magpul trigger guard, TangoDown Battle grip and Daniel Defense Omega rail, Daniel Defense end plate (with QD-hole for sling attachment) topped off with an Aimpoint T-1 on a LaRue QD mount.

Very cool. That said I'm a big fan of the battle comp now that I've used it.

Plus my triple tap, once it gets some carbon build up, start doing some weird things to my groups. Totally clean my SR15 shoots about 1.5moa. Some buildup and it damn near keyholes. Friggin annoying. Wish I'd have gone surefire K brake on those guns.

Thanks man.

I have a BC 1.0 on one SR15 E3 upper, and then the Triple Tap on another SR15 E3 upper. I used the same lower for the comparison and they were pretty damn close, the most obvious difference being the price difference. I know this has already been covered in the Battlecomp thread a million times already, but the BC is very nice for its price.

I still prefer the Triple Tap over the Battlecomp, because I can notice a difference between the two with regards to muzzle climb. Either way, they both do exactly what they're supposed to do, which is great.

Anyways, pic:

thanks guys, I think I have ironed out a pretty decent setup. But I still appreciate and lust for a different rigs (love that TRX).

Ultimately I decided that I should have a standard setup in a rifle and a SBR for training purposes.
this guy will be almost identical to this (but with fixed rear):
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z152/eternal24k/008-11.jpg

Is that a Comp M2? Have you shot it yet? I have an M2 and an M3, Im tryin to decide if I want the M2 on the M4? Or put the M2 on the SBR and the M3 on the M4, since the 2moa and 4moa dots.
It's the M3, I personally like the 2MOA and you can crank it up to let the dot "blossom" if you want something bigger

I also removed my backup iron sights that were originally on the gun now that I have the YHM gas block/front sight. I'm going to be upgrading the rear to a troy I think.

Parts list in case anyone is wondering:

DPMS AR15 Carbine
Magpul Handguard
Magpul B.A.D. Lever
Magpul MIAD Grip
YHM Compensator (Agressive End)
YHM Gas Block/Hooded Front Sight

Plan to upgrade the optic to an Aimpoint and a Trijcon.
