Don't know how I missed that. I am in CA too. In fact, I got my AR built at JDMT here in San Diego. I feel stupid for not putting the two together.

Did I need this gun? No. But I had to have a Colt back in the lineup after they started selling in the PRK again. Brought her home July 3. Handling it really brings back some memories. This is the gun I grew up on. It's killing me though- been traveling on business and now sick as a dog, so I just sit on my couch knocking back NyQuil and staring at her....COLT LE 6920 MOE (Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics).

So I went to the local range today and finally sighted in my Colt M4 LE6940. I have a Trijicon ACOG TA31F-G with a Trijicon RMR RM06 mounted on top of the ACOG.

The range allows the target to go to a maximun of 25 yards therefore I sighted the ACOG to a distance of 25 yards and RMR to a distance of 15 yards. After some tweaking with the ACOG and RMR, I finally got the sights zeroed in. Here are some pictures:

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/davidnguyen1151/Guns/7d03874d.jpg
(Putting up a fresh piece of paper to verify the ACOG was zeroed @ 25 yards... first shot :D)

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/davidnguyen1151/Guns/b957f2c7.jpg
(Verifying the RMR was zeroed in @ my desired 15 yards.... then seeing how the ACOG would land at this distance)

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l155/davidnguyen1151/Guns/5cf4b942.jpg
(This was a good day at the range. I threw away all the other targets... they were as nice as the final product.... lol)

I should assume you may already know, but you are going to want to re- zero them at a 100,(or 50) meters asap. If I were you and couldn't get to a 100m range, zero them both to shoot about 2-2.25 inches low at 25m, this will put you on paper at 100m.

ddnguyen9 ,how do you like that stock? any real amount of storage?

The storage isn't that great. You can fit two CR123 batteries but they will rattle. A bore snake will definitely fit. I got that stock b/c I just love the feel of the sturdy stock and I think it helps the accuracy.

Once you get the ACOG zeroed at 100, here are your holds at close ranges:

I have the TA31RCO-M4CP and verified this while in Michigan last year for work:

50m Hold below the chevron which is 200m
25m Hold at the 300m tip
20m Hold 410
15m Hold 515
10m Hold 625
5m Hold 750
3 shots at each distance

I also have a T1 and here is my final group with a 50y zero on that:

You are correct. The one on the right was custom made to be very similar, but for a 20" upper. I have since sold that upper, so now it just holds a 14.7"

I'm certainly no Stickman but here goes ...

1. Noveske 14.5 Midlength complete upper w/ permanently attached SureFire MB556k compensator and Noveske/SWS midlength rail.

2. Aimpoint Micro T-1 2MOA on LaRue LT660 mount

3. SureFire Mini Scout on Midwest front sight mount.

4. LMT rear iron sight

5. Trijicon tritium AR sight inserts

6. MagPul AFG 1

7. LaRue handstop

8. MagPul rail ladders

9. Blackhawk QD sling swivel

10. BCM Gunfighter Mod 3 (large) charging handle

11. BCM Gunfighter pistol grip Mod 0 containing extra CR123 batteries for the SureFire mini scout and extra sight inserts and sight tool.

12. MagPul BAD lever

13. Troy ambidextrous selector

14. Geissele SSA trigger

15. MagPul ASAP

16. Vltor EMOD containing extra CR2032 batteries for the Aimpoint

I usually run this with a MagPul MS2 set up as single point sling and usually run PMags with the MagPul ranger plates.

I really like having the LaRue handstop positioned on the side rail to use in conjunction with the MagPul AFG. It really helps me lock in a good grip with my thumb over bore.

I got my first AR earlier this week. Shot it today and then added some basics this evening.

Colt LE6920
Magpul MOE handguard w/QD swivel mount
Surefire/Viking Tactics L4 in IWC mount
Vickers Combat Applications Sling

I may make changes to the front swivel to allow the light to mount farther forward. Or I might not. I don't intend to use an aggressive thumb over grip anyway.

If you do decide you want to move the light, 2111 armory makes a sweet extended polymer handguard for carbine length gas systems. It's similar in style to the moe. I've been Thinkin of ditching my quad rail for one.

That's the way it came. It's infused/dyed from the lighter color to black leaving only the graphic the original color.

It's the most comfortable stock I have used.

I dont have one, yet, right now I am running a Magpul STR, but I am thinking of picking up a TI 7. I can however recommend the KAC Micro 600m sight I picked up recently, better than any other sight I have used including the Troy, althought the Troy is a close second.

I cut down an AFG to fit right in front of the RVG. Gives a bit of an angle to fill the gap for my fingers and provides a hand stop at the same time.

Hi. I've been lurking here for a while...so thought I would introduce myself. I'm Trey and thank you for all the great info on this site!

I had a lightweight 16" Carbine built last year and never really liked it. So, I researched and hunted down a new Spikes 16in 5.56 "Dissipator" on GB and bought it.

After getting it home, I found my Aero Precision Multi-Cal lower fit better and had a better trigger than the "stock" Spikes LPK that came with it....although I swapped out for the Spikes T2 buffer & spring.

My Ergo F93 PRO-stock and Ergo grip were also way better than the Spikes stuff. I attached a single 4" Magpul rail section to the MOE rifle length front hand guards for the VFG. I forget the brand of VFG, but I sanded it down to get rid of the sharp edges.

Topped it off with a co-witnessing AimPoint T-1 2MOA RDS on a GG&G mount with integral lens covers...and ta da!

I've always been a sucker for a Dissipator! Welcome to M4C? That said, can you elaborate on why you put your VFG so close to the magwell? Also, why is the rear BUIS not so far back as it could be?

And maybe I'm misreading your post... but if you put a built upper together with a built lower... that's not within the custom build thread spirit (or M4C guidance: http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=82447). You may find the mods moved your thread to the general AR discussion.

Welcome aboard!

Man, I got a 16" BCM middy upper that NEEDS to become a dissy. Not sure how I'm gonna do it yet though as I'm not sure I have much faith in the clamp on fsb.

duglasfur
07-27-12, 07:48
El Cid is probably right...while I did install some parts, the barrel was attached to the upper receiver with gas port and the FSB when I got it. This should probably be moved to the General AR discussion.

As for the rear BUIS being so far forward...I am 42 and the couple of slots forward helps me to actually SEE the rear sight. It also interferes with ther charging handle a little if it is any further back.

I tried an ambidextrous charging handle, but it pinched HARD on the right side of the upper between the forward assist amd the handle arms when pushing it forward.

And the VFG is close to magwell so I can still grip the fore end of the handguard. It is also further forward than where it would be on a Carbine length handguard...I'm still deciding on final placement of things. Thanks for your comments.

Have you tried the "thumb over" grip? It helps drive the gun and recover from each shot. I'd recommend moving the VFG forward and using it as a reference point while placing your thumb on top of the handguard. Something like this pic:

Also, I'm not familiar with that model VFG but I'd avoid anything that folds. Good luck and go shoot it!

Those folding VFGs are pure shite. Get something fixed or do away with it altogether. Magpul makes a VFG that is meant to attach to the MOE.

I like this particular VFG...even though I don't know the name. I just grabbed it off another "test" gun at my LGS. It only folds backwards...and I have extensively shaved it for better fit/finish/grip. It was a NECESSITY on the carbine handguards for control.

I know it is not a tactical reason, but the non-folding ones I've tried don't fit in my carbine gun bags. I did try the Magpul one. I thought it looked and felt cheap. With the 4" rail bolter through the handguard and heat shield, this is mounted MUCH more sturdily that the MOE specific one.

I am still NOT dead set on keeping the VFG. The longer handguard seems like it might be OK by itself. I had never thought about using the 'thumb over' grip. Interesting idea and I will try it with the VFG pushed further forward.

PLEASE keep the comments and suggestions coming...this really is my 1st AR and I don't want to be "that guy" when I go to Carbine class in a couple months ;)

MistWolf
07-27-12, 13:15
About the rear sight- you don't need to see the rear sight, you need to be able to look through it. Another thing that often helps is to use the larger aperture. To eliminate the pinching, use a Gunfighter Mod 3 or Mod 4 charging handle.

I know forearms don't affect how a rifle functions, but I've never liked Dissys until I saw them with the MagPul MOE. How's it shoot?

It is only a 16" rifle, so it has a mid-length gas system, but the recoil is noticeably softer compared to a carbine length gas system. VERY smooth...feels like my Remington Speedmaster 22lr (not quite, but NICE).

I've only been going to test various combinations of parts and haven't really put it through it's paces. I posted the pics b/c I think this is the package I will be refining.

The Ergo stock is ROCK SOLID and it shoots nice tight groups with the iron sights. And REAL tight groups with the RDS and that was mostly with Georgia Arms .223 55gr reloads.

I've only shot it out to ~50 yards indoors with good ammo (BH blue box 60gr V-max) and blew the center right out of the target with 1st 20rd mag.

I know what you mean about the rear sight...but, when I'm swapping sights and RDS', I like the small apperature, so I can really guage how far off the adjustments are from rifle to rifle, upper to upper. I've shot open sights since I was a kid. I currently do NOT even own a scope.

This rear sight's small apperature is tiny (Israeli?), so when I am going for accuracy, I need to "see" through it. Otherwise, w/ both eyes open, I cannot always tell if I'm seeing the front sight or one of the ears  and I know I'll take some shiz for even saying that...

Just got the LaRue mount in. I think it's pretty much finished, but I'm still debating whether or not to buy a second A5 RE for it. My 11.5" has one, and it's awesome.

This is a well trained dog!:)

This pic shows up on every computer I've been on, I don't understand why no one else can see it. If it is possible can someone repost this so everyone can enjoy? Thanks.

Where is the picture from? (it doesn't show up)

You can't point to an image that is stored on your computer or that you got in your email, you have to upload it to a site that will host it, such as photobucket, and then link it from that host site

Like how you went with the #40L Kilo.

Bought a S&W M&P 15 tactical with the quad rail in 5.56. I looked at them all. I liked the colt but didn't like I couldn't remove the front sight post. I think I'll get the colt next time but I fell in love with the smith right off. 13042

That's a solid piece, but for your next one you should try building one. It's about the same price, if not cheaper, and you become much more intimate with your rifle and its inner workings.

I've built four. It is never cheaper. Between required tools and assorted shipping, multiple trips to the LGS, etc., it always costs more.

The biggest benefit to "rolling your own", is with careful selection, you get the rifle you want, set-up exactly the way you want it, from the start, as apposed to modding S&W's, Colt's, or whoever's out of the box setup, and as you state, one acquires an intimate level of knowledge of the assembly and operation of their rifle.

Definitely agree that that is the major benefit to assembling on your own. IMO a quality, factory gun is good to start training with. And a great way to hash out "what parts would help me to be a 'better' shooter" vs "what looks cool"

I've got a Smith, actually, one and two halves, a complete rifle and two 5.45 uppers. Smith and Wesson makes good stuff, you won't be disappointed.

I think its a good first choice. I have one and its has never let me down. Mine has the 1:9 barrel but I have not shot anything heavier than 62g. Acurracy is good.

What was the purpose of starting a brand new generic thread on your first post? Did you have a reason to start a brand spankin' new thread, such as an intention of sparking a discussion that had some sort of question that required answering, a thoughtful review of a firearm, or engaging in debate and commentary on some nuance or minutia of the AR platform?

Or was it simply "LOOK AT ME!!!"

The very first sticky on this page is the AR Picture thread. It's where photos of new guns belong if people want to show off their new purchase, for the sake of showing off a new purchase.

Have to agree with Cesium, this topic does not deserve it's own thread.

Pic thread material.
