The very first sticky on this page is the AR Picture thread. It's where photos of new guns belong if people want to show off their new purchase, for the sake of showing off a new purchase.

When the OP's thread is gone, be sure to look there for it. :o

Welcome to M4Carbine.net. It looks like you have a nice AR there.
You might want to check out the "Sticky" list at the top of this forum for further AR info and use the "Search" feature for even more help. That way you can avoid starting threads on already answered questions. :D

(I'll leave the propriety of this thread to the "Mods" and "Staff" who are the ones tasked with such decisions as I have never cared much for self-appointed "Hall Monitors".) :dirol:

Wow Cesium...way to shit on the new guy. If you take that tone with people in person, I wouldn't blame them for punching you in the throat.

Through all that hot fire you spit, is your attempt to guide a new member towards proper procedure? If it is...I'd venture to say there's another (read: better) way in which to do it.

Lest we forget we were all new once and most likely ****ed up then (and maybe a bit since then). OP, it's true that this forum doesn't promote the 'look at my new gun' threads - in the future, a better place would be the picture thread if you want to show off and talk a bit about your carbine. Explaining why you chose the kit you did, as well as your intended uses, will go a long way with members here as well.

Some stickies that may help you learn the protocol 'round here.

This is my new but temporary setup for home defense and such. It is a Colt 6920 lower with a B5 stock, MOE+ pistol grip and trigger guard. The upper is a Colt 653 with a Knight's Armament M4 RAS. Nowhere near as advanced as what you guys have but it should do the job if needed. The A1 upper will be replaced with an A3 upper (no M4 feedramps), a surefire light will be added as well as an Aimpoint, either a PRO or a T1 depending on the budget. The 14.5 inch barrel is 1/12 twist, and yes, the extended A2 FH is permanently attached. I chose 1/12 because this rifle is intended for short range and M193 ammo is cheaper than M855 and works just fine at short distances.

It's UDE. I think it looks a bit different in person than in pictures, but the FDE + UDE is a nice combo imo.

I put about 40 through it last night at the local 25yd indoor range just to confirm function and get the sights on paper. No pics, though...small, cramped, and poorly lit. Couldn't hardly get zeroed for all the kids crowding around to see what all the blast was about!:D

So how does the pistol handle with all that weight out front?

Not sure what you mean. That's a handheld light. It's not attached to the pistol. The silencer doesn't weigh that much. It does help keep it a little flatter under recoil, but it's not overly muzzle heavy.

I bought the leupold HAMR awhile ago for a build that has yet to come in from Wilson Combat. I decided to go a different route with the optics on that one so I had this optic lying around. It's a 4x24mm fixed power with a reflex sight. It's supposed to be a contender with the ACOG and reflex but I haven't been able put it to the test yet. Saturday, I will be testing it but the reviews have been good. I'll post results soon.

I appreciate the comment. Will have some more pics Tuesday. That's my next day off. I will say that I have been quite hesitant to switch to a tube style handguard from a traditional railed one but the NSR is absolutely fabulous and I dont like exaggeration in anything but I really am impressed with this setup.

I've got to move to Alabama. There seems to be ALOT more shooters with a similar mindset towards shooting and gear than south central Mississippi. I swear I live in a 'tactical black hole'!

You want to talk about a "tactical black hole" try living in Illinois! I'm lucky I can even own an AR. Their aren't many options for me to even shoot it and none for me to go out and shoot it that aren't off a bench (that I know of around me).

Will get pictures of my new DD up once I get my camera (AKA phone) around the gun on a day off.

Shadow93,

In lieu of your comment and situation I guess I shouldn't complain! I hate that for ya.

To all thats commented on the black hole its ironic about guns in the South. Everyone I know is pro-gun and unfortunately just about everyone I know shoots probably less than a hundred rounds a year. Even thats from a bench with their deer rifle or standing static with their cheap 1911 with a teacup and saucer grip.

But I am lucky to be living in a place where there is an overwhelming pro-gun attitude so that's a good start.

100 rounds a year? lol, thats about how many rounds I shoot with my glock each range trip. Sadly, I have to travel about 2 hours if I want to do any dynamic shooting.

Heck I probably shoot a couple hundred rounds every 2 days

jaxman7
08-07-12, 10:15
Yeh the handstop was pretty difficult to install. Harder than any other panel. I think it might be because the handstop portion itself adds rigidity to the panel and there has to be a small amount of flex in the panel to install it. I do like them though.

The handstop in front of the foregrip is not used for a handstop. This is something I discovered while using a Magpul AFG. My support hand index finger wraps around the front of the handstop and it gives me a little more leverage to pull the gun towards my shoulder.

Yes, in that picture my rear sight is on backwards. It's an old pic but the only one I had of that rifle. I really should take a new picture.

I've never heard having the optic mount half on rail and half on receiver being bad. Is it because of possible movement between the two? I guess ideally if the rail is a good one and locks up solid, there should never be movement? Any info on this would be appreciated.

This one is a "Chicago legal" AR15. Chicago has rather strict gun registration ordinance. The person whom I built this for and I were joking it may be the first AR15 registered in the City of Chicago. Boy oh boy did he have to jump through alot of hoops, even though this complies with the Chicago Ordinance word for word.

If it's really a concern, give it a day at the range and give it hell and see if it keeps zero.

If not, or if it is still a concern, you have 2 options: a cantilevered scope mount or a monolithic upper receiver with integrated rail such as the one made by Lewis Machine Tool in IL.

Just took a new pic and replaced the old one in my post.

I've ran the FDE one through two carbine course and shot ~850 rounds thru it. I haven't had any issues with the T1 going off zero yet.

The other build is a newer one so I haven't given it a real test as of yet. Hopefully sometime this fall, I will run it through a training course.

Wow, looks just like a "featureless" AR here in CA. I know other states/cities had various AW restrictions but thought nothing was as bad as CA for semi-auto rifles (outside of outright bans).

I don't really know why they have those up there. Not my range, only went there this weekend for an event and probably won't be back (just too far away).

I can only imagine they believe it is adequate to stop rounds that get fired up there by accident thus avoiding bullets that pass over the berm.

Fixed rear but folding front, Junkie, can you expand on this???? I've seen plenty of the op
posite with fixed front and folding rear but never this config.

Also, that looks like a DD A1.5, how do you like it?

Not BCmJUnKie, but for a lot of guys who have astigmatisms, the dot on an Aimpoint can look more like an oval than a circle. Having an absolute co-witness of the BUIS, the dot appears circular when you look through the rear, thus making it easier to aim for some people.

I know there are a lot of left handed AR shooters out there. I thought I'd start a thread discussing left handed AR parts and mods to make AR's more lefty friendly.

I will say that I am right handed, but have always shot left handed because I'm left eye dominate. I've been interested in some of the newer generation rifles like the SCAR or ACR because of their ambi controls, but recently with the availability of some good lefty parts, I feel that I have as much control now as any right handed shooter would.

I've added a troy mag release, ambi safety, and the new Rainier arms ambi charging handle.

Mag changes and locking the bolt back in failure situations is not nearly as awkward and is now much faster for me. The troy ambi release is probably the most used feature, allowing me to change mags the same as any right hander, cutting the step out where I'd have to hit the release with my right hand then insert my mag with my right hand. I like the ambi safety, but could get by using my trigger finger to operate it. If anything, I might look for a shorter lever on the left side the current safety lever does protrude out and rub on my trigger finger.

I'm just and average lefty shooter, no special training, but it's a great time to be a lefty AR shooter compared to even a few years ago.

Lefty's show us what you have or tell us about what it's been like for you shooting from the "other" side.

Here's a few pics of my setup.

For this particular issue I suggest looking at safeties from Battle Arms Development (http://battlearmsdevelopment.com/badass.php) (BAD). Their ambi safeties are top notch, and you can select your levers in multiple lengths, configurations, and even different colors. I particularly like their 45° model (the BAD ASS ST).

I second this, a lefty the BAD-ASS has been the best so far.

I learned AR's as a lefty shooting a standard rifle. For most situations it works fine, albeit a tad slower. Over the last few years I've standardized all of my carbines with ambi safeties and mag releases. as a lefty the bolt lock, release works better for us. So far I've never seen a reason to go with an ambi CH. If you reload by using the charging handle it might be beneficial but with the bolt release so perfectly positioned for lefties I almost always use it.

The CH really isn't a must have. I liked the look of the new Rainier one, and in certain circumstances (double feeds) it's easier to grab the CH on the right side with my right hand while locking the bolt back with my trigger finger on my left. Any manipulation with the bolt release and CH is easier since I don't have to cross over to the left side to pull the CH back.

I also have the Knights Armament mag release on another lower I have, but I don't like it as much as the troy. Its larger and harder to press because of the way it's leveraged than the troy, plus it's not quite at the same location on the lower as the mag release on the right side of the rifle.

Tango374

As a lefty I've always extended all four fingers of my firing hand and hit the bolt release with my middle finger.
I tried to create my own extended bolt release with a cut down BAD lever with hopes of hitting it with just my trigger finger not having to extend all four fingers out.
In all honesty, I wouldn't call it a screaming success.
Kind of hard to explain but because I'm placing pressure on the release off to the side of pivoting point of the bolt release, every once in a while would cause the release to bind up. Not every time, but maybe one attempt out of 15, which was enough to ditch the idea.
I went back to the old ways of hitting the release with my middle finger but kept the cut down BAD on there because I do appreciate the extra real estate.

Sure thing buddy.

My logic is, If I need to make a long distance shot, I would be using the 12.5" over the 11.5".

That being said, I want my magnifier on the Kino, not the shorty. I couldnt mount it with the fixed rear.

Plus....the shorty is FAST. Its just a fast weapon to shoot. The fixed rear makes it that much better.

My grip is already at the end of the rail, if I need to deploy the sight (which would be never in a gunfight) Its not gonna exactly take a long time

Food for thought: we see more guns make their way onto the street from theft from motor vehicles than we do residential burglaries. I encourage folks to invest in a vault if they have to leave their kit inside an unattended car.

thanks...

It's Aervoe paint. Sand base with sections of Marine Corps green, a little Dark Green (which is more like grass), a couple small spots of Field Drab, then the accents are Sand and Krylon Brown. I used Aervoe OD green as a dusting over everything. Then Sand as a dusting on the receivers today since it was too green.

For the accents, I cut shapes similar to Multicam out of a manilla folder, held it over and sprayed it. The closer, the finer the edges. If I hold it farther away or lift one side, it has a shadowing effect.

Hope that helps a bit. Here are some of the other ones I did. There's still another M&P and suppressor missing along with a bolt gun.

Thanks to Munch520 for the loaner M2 while I save up for at least a used T1. Sometimes things just suck!

Thats awesome you have a friend like Munch, hes a friend on my Facebook. Hes a good guy. I would help you out if you lived closer.

Munch is a good dude. He's in Ohio, but is coming to South Texas in a couple weeks.

Y'all are too kind. Happy to help!

Added a little sand overspray to lighten it up.

Ha! I saw the post and assumed it was a joke, but didn't see it was you that posted it...

So, you stripped all the paint off of your upper? Did it have the SOCOM barrel when we put the A5 on and I shot it?

Yeah, the foaming bore cleaner ate about half of it off and I wiped the rest off with acetone and a paper towel. Took about a minute, maybe two. It was just Krylon and I only wiped the paint off the receiver itself.

Yup, always been a SOCOM. It's one of those LE6920HB guns that SAW had back in '03. I sold the original .170"lower back to the guy I bought it from and had it on that Noveske lower for about five months.

I ended up not liking the A5. My dot danced around a lot between shots, made my splits suck and was frustrating to shoot. Also, with that lower, I never could get a mag to seat on a closed bolt without bruising my hand, so I sold the lower and went back to a complete Colt with the original H2 buffer.

All is well with the world now:dance3:.

You oughta come out to CCP&R in the morning and shoot a pistol match with us...

My son and I just finished building this carbine:

It's set up so that it fits him well functionally and ergonomically. This is my backup so it's also set up very close to the same as my primary (below):
