Thanks Paul,
I put this together from just a bunch of left over parts from my collection.

Its a Vltor Mur upper in Cerakote-H (Nut Brown)by Parabellum inc.
the upper was assembled by Adco with
Cmmg socom 14.5 barrel
Vltor gas block pinned
Vortex FH
DD 12.0 lite rail in FDE Gunkote by Adco
Troy FDE sights
LMT A BCG
Tangodown FDE qd VFG
Blue force sling mount
Vickers FDE sling

The lower is also cerakote-H Nut Brown
which is a BM and was stripped of all BM parts,
I rebuilt with all Colt parts except
LMT 2 stage trigger
LMT front pivot pin
KNS T/H pins
BCM milspec buffer ext staked
magpu miad FDE
LMT sopmod FDE
I was also playing around with a JP tension take down pin, jurys still out.

Got my Daniel Defense Omega in the mail last night... Easy to install and looks great, feels solid. Can't wait to put it through the paces with new rail/grip.

The rifle is a CMMG lightweight midlength 14.5" upper and CMMG lower.

BTW- Kevin at www.BrightFlashlights.com has the absolute best prices EVER on DD rails and flashlights.

2. What's the story on that upper receiver?

Cant say for sure where He got these but:

1. Adco Firearms has a Middy Dissy

2. looks to be a RRA UTE 2 upper(Universal Tactical Entry)

Is that the Eotech optic on your rifle? How far were you shooting?

It might just be me, but it sure does look like you are flinching/blinking/closing your eyes a lot while shooting.

I eventually want to put a rail system on my Bushy but I am stuck on which ones to use as I have a permanently mounted flashhider... I can use the:
DD Omega
Troy MRF
Midwest Industries 2 piece free float forearm
or the samson fore arm
So I guess the guestion is which one I should use I like the way the Troy looks but I like the fact that the DD you don't have to modify or cut anything on the rifle...
so any suggestions, personal opinions, or experiances with any of them please let me know.

My goodness there are too many fine rifles on this thread. Being in Asia, we don't have access to products made by LaRue, Troy, Midwest, et. al. I'm just way envious of the stuff I see here. Am drooling as I type. Nevertheless, here is my contribution to this thread. My rifles are pretty much plain jane. I consider all of them "shooters", meaning they may be plain but they are highly calibrated pieces. They are all fully automatic too. All have pretty decent barrels too from E.R. Shaw and Wilson. It was hard getting the units with Super Bulls from Wilson to go full auto but we managed. I'm hoping to change all the stocks to Magpuls. Eventually I guess. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with my pieces.:)

Kukang: How do you like the CAA stock? I've been eyeballing them for awhile, but haven't had the chance to talk to anyone who's tried it out.

I'm totally sick of waiting for the MagPul ACS to hit the scene, I may just leap on the CAA.

Does the adjustable cheek-piece get in the way of the charging handle?

I really could use some sort of cheek-riser for my main blaster's setup, as when I'm tippy-toe, nosy-nose on the CH I have trouble seeing the reticle of my optic.

The CAA stock has really worked well for me. Quality wise it is excellent. Fit and finish are good. Am happy with them though I'm beginning to tire of the look.

The adjustable cheek piece does get in the way of the charging handle it you don't extend the stock. It is very handy though.

I cut the XTM pannel. I use a cheap miter box and hax saw......You can get both at Lowes, Home Depot, or simular store........Look at the XTM pannel on the 12 o'cloc rail and you can see where I cut the XTM pannel so I wouldn't cover the quick detach hole on the LaRue rail.

Jeff, how hard was it to remove that rail? Are their any special tools needed?

USMC03
11-19-08, 20:50
Al,

The Noveske N4 carbine came from the factory looking like this, and was used in Pat Rogers class in this configuration:

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk99/USMC03_photos/Noveske%20N4/IMG_0634.jpg

I had shoulder surgery a couple months ago (strong side shoulder). The project took longer than anticipated, thus I didn't have it back until after I had shoulder surgery. Just saw the Orthopedic Surgeon last week and he doesn't want me shooting until after he sees me again in Jan. Thus I don't have any rounds down range through the Surefire muzzle brake yet.

decodeddiesel,

The SWS rail takes a special tool to disassemble (remove the barrle nut), you can rent the tool for $16 or buy it for $30 or $40 (can't remember the exact price) from SWS.

On the gun posted above, I was able to get the barrel nut off myself. Wasn't hard at all, especially with the correct tool.

Long story short, I had sent the upper off to an un-named gunsmith and informed him of the tool needed for the SWS barrel nut. He told me he had worked on several Noveske uppers. The work that was to be completed was: remove the perminately attached Surefire flash hider (cut off), remove the SWS 10.0, install the LaRue 11.0, and perminately attach the Surfire muzzle brake. This incident kind of suprised me because he had always done excellent work for me in the past.

He got the surefire flash hider cut off, and said he couldn't get the rail off the gun and sent it back to me (no charge), but didn't want to perminately install the Surefire muzzle brake after I had gotten the rail switched out, so I had to sent it to another gunsmith to have the muzzle brake perminately attached.

On my Noveske RECCE low profile, loc-tite must have been applied at the factory as it was a real pain to get off. A lot of heat had to be applied and a lot of force. At the time I was still in a sling and a friend had to do the work on the RECCE, with me assisting......we didn't think the barrel nut was going to come loose, but with patience, the right amount of fire, and enough torque, we were able to get the barrel nut loose.

I read this on ADCO's website, "We do NOT disassemble uppers assembled by Noveske. He uses loctite on everything, and you cant pay us enough to take them apart." Too bad as Noveske builds a great rifle and ADCO does some great work. Too bad Noveske does not still use Larue rails (because of the lighter weight and the extensive options). I still think it's cool, however, that John is supporting a smaller guy (SWS) here in Texas:D

Also, thanks for the info on the barrel and upper Jeff, much appreciated.

"Nitrocarburized barrel" owww, sounds fancy, must be good.(races to google it)

theblackknight
11-23-08, 23:02
"A method for nitriding and nitrocarburizing the bores of rifle barrels or similar elongated hollow objects in which a funnel is attached to the inlet end of each of rifle barrel prior to treatment. The rifle barrels are then loaded into a fluidized bed furnace in a substantially vertical position with the open end of the funnel facing the direction of flow of the reactant gases and fluidized particulate medium through the fluidized bed furnace. When the rifle barrels are submerged in the fluidized particulate medium, the rifle barrels are heated to a reaction temperature for a predetermined period of time. The funnels increase the quantity of reactant gases and fluidized particulate medium flowing through the bore of each rifle barrel. As a result, excellent nitrided and nitrocarburized surfaces have been obtained in the bores of rifle barrels made from ferrous and titanium alloys at reduced processing temperatures and times. "

Very happy with the T-1/Larue BUIS setup (BUIS is a notch forward as I tried to get a pic of the neat US flag that's etched there, but the pic came out crappy). Have only fired a couple of hundred rounds through it so far, so no real range report for now. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase, even with the CS issues and wait times that I had with LWRC.

UVis,

It's a Bravo Company Stainless Mid-Length barrel

The Stainless Mid-Length Bravo Company barrels can be seen here:
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-16-Recce-Barrel-with-Mid-Length-Gas-p/bcm-recbrl%2016ss.htm

from their website:

coming soon.... (late 2008)

This BCM stripped barrel is machined from a 410 stainless steel. It features hand lapped button rifling with a 1/8 twist rate and M4 feedramps. As with all BCM barrels it is proofed (HPT) and magnetic particle inspected (MPI). To give the shooter the best balance of weight and accuracy this BCM Recce barrel has a mid weight profile and a mid length gas system.
(410 stainless is a harder and more corrosion resistant than the conventional 416 stainless found in most barrels.)

Features:

-M4 Feed Ramp Barrel Extension
-Mid Length Gas System
-1/8 Twist Rate
-5.56 NATO Match Chambers
-410 Stainless Steel
-Mid Weight Contour Profile Barrels
-Button Rifled
-Hand Lapped Rifling
-HPT (High Pressure Test) Barrels
-MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspected) Barrels

From what I've been told the Stainless Mid-Length barrels will be sold as barrels only (ie. not as complete uppers) and won't have the option of the USGI A2 front sight post.

I built this one for my wife. She loves it and she is hell on wheels with it. It is a blast to watch her dry fire practice and count down the days till we hit the range!:
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2858/katy1dq7.jpg

This is my latest build. It is my first experience with a Colt lightweight barrel and so far I am digging it. I have also found the DD Lite 9.5 to be a great solution for those who need more rail space on a carbine. The T-1 has rocked my world when it comes to optics.:
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/469/lightweight1up8.jpg

Here is my truck gun. I got an incredible deal on an ban era Bushmaster carbine that someone had duracoated and welded on a Phantom with 4 huge chunky welds. I dropped in a new MPI tested bolt, staked everything down, and added an H buffer - she runs great:
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/9796/truck1xk2.jpg

This one used to belong to our illustrious moderator Hawkeye.I've added some goodies. I sheered a lug in a carbine course so I replaced the old group with a Denny's Super Duty. So far, so good:
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9700/utility1ba5.jpg

Varmints beware:
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/2298/varmint1qb4.jpg

Sadly, this one is missing it's optic. The TA33R-8 is spending some time at Trijicon for repair:

I sold that gun approximatley 2 years ago to fund another project.

It was economical, light weight, well balanced, simple, and was very pleasant to shoot.

With the options that are avalible today that weren't avalible when I built the gun pictured above, the only things I would change are:

-I would change the standard Vltor Carbine stock for a Vltor EMod stock

-I would change the Aimpoint ML3 for an Aimpoint T1

-You can't go wrong with either version of the Blue Force Gear VCAS sling, but I prefer the padded version of the VCAS.

A very simular carbine that's just waiting on a padded VCAS and a couple other accessories:

Thanks for the input. As I am in college and don't have sufficient funds I thought that would be a good setup for me since it is "economical". One more question. I noticed you had the cav arms c6 fat handguards on the older setup and the tapered ones on your newer. Which do you prefer?

cbs gave jericho 7 episodes to finish it out. it played when most shows on t.v. were reruns because of the writer's strike.

the writers had season two written out, but had to condense it down to 7 episodes. season two was more of a wrap up and an idea to show the viewers where they were going.

jericho unfortunately did not get a renewal after that as it could not pull in the needed viewers to keep it going.

WOW! I see some amazing rifles here. It's pretty humbling to post my build, but I'm proud of it so I'll give you guys the break down anyway. :D

This is the first AR I have ever built just for my own use. There are still a few things I would like to add/change, but I decided it is better to have a working carbine "right now" instead of continuing to save money for more expensive parts and accessories that might not be available when I have the funds.

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/the_fallguy/PCS15/PCS15left-1.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/the_fallguy/PCS15/PCS15right-1.jpg

The UPPER:
For my upper I went with a DTI mid-length chrome lined heavy barrel, with a 1:9 twist, and a "key hole" marked upper receiver. The free float tube, flash hider, and the flip up front and rear sights are all from YHM. The charging handle latch is a gen II Badger Tac-Latch. The rail covers are Magpul XTMs.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/the_fallguy/PCS15/PCS15barrel-1.jpg

The LOWER:
My lower receiver is from Predator Custom Shop. I used a DPMS LPK and an RRA ambidextrous safety selector switch. Magpul made the MOE grip I am using, along with the winter trigger guard (a must-have upgrade for those of us who have large hands and suffer scrapes and callouses from the trigger guard gap). I am willing to bet my stock assembly is a fairly unique set-up; I filed and sanded down the inside of and over-sized mil-spec Choate collapsible stock to fit an undersized commercial spec Ace receiver extension tube. The fit is super tight, with no movement or stock rattle.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/the_fallguy/PCS15/PCS15receiver-1.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/the_fallguy/PCS15/PCS15stock-1.jpg

I am still trying to decide on optics. This build broke my piggy bank pretty good, so I will be spending some time getting to know my iron sights better while I save up for optics. I am considering the Millett DMS-1 as a "long term" temporary solution. I would love to go with a tough, combat proven set up, but much like my rifle build, temporary equipment I can hold in my hands trumps the best made optics that are still setting on the store shelf.

- Stag Arms upper, RRA lower
- Magpul Furniture (CTR, MIAD)
- KAC RAS, rail panels, vert. grip (I'm using a cheap Pro-Mag one since I found it to be a bit beefier than the KAC front grip)
- VTAC 2 point sling.

Assembled, with sling, I had to bubba up a temporary solution there, I understand this would be a bad solution on a 5.56 upper but I have no gas tube that could bend so it's okay for now:

Still missing the flash hider but I'll get to that next week, I'm also going to suppress the rifle. Next stop is getting a .223 upper.

Gear selection is often choosing the "lesser of the two evils". For the way I use the rig at work it functions well. Not as fluid or quick as drawing it from a kydex holster from the belt, but it works for me.

I've heard a lot of great things about the MOE grip, with the exception of the insert problem of rattling/falling out.

I'm torn between the MOE and the Tango Down Battle Grip. I'm hoping I can get hands on with both at the gun show next weekend to see which one I like more.

The stocks are the Magpul UBR.

Comparing the UBR to the CRT is a "apples to oranges" comparisoin, not an apples to apples comparison.

Repost of info I had written on another thread:

It really comes down to personal preference and that is not something that can be explained or decided over the internet. You really can't go wrong with either stock.

**********************************************************************

Something I have learned about AR's over the years is, it's a game of matching the right part with the right gun. You may try a stock on a 10.5" SBR and hate it, and then try the same stock on a 16" mid-length carbine and fall in love with it.

Here is something I wrote in another thread in reference to my personal preferences on different stocks:

**********************************************************************

There are some accessories that I like across the board on all AR's, there are other accessories that I may like on a 11.5" SBR but not like on a 16" Mid-Length or a 20" rifle.

Stocks can

1) help balance out a rifle

2) or if the stock too big or heavy can dominate the gun

3) and if it's too small or too light can make the gun feel muzzle heavy

After trying several different configurations over the year, at the current time I have found that I like Magpul CTR's on SBR's and some 14.5" M4's but I don't like Mapgul CTR's on 16" barreled mid-lengths or 14.5" guns with longer rail systems (9.0 - 13.2). The Magpul CTR is a light weight stock and doesn't balance out a front heavy carbine well.

SOPMODs (for me) fit perfectly on a 14.5" M4, but can also balance most SBR's and mid-lengths out fairly well.

Vltor EMods and Magpul UBRs balance out 16" Mid-Lenghts and most 18" gun with rifle length gas tubes quite well.

As a general rule I run:

-Magpul CTR's on SBR's (short barreled rifle) and some 14.5" M4's (with carbine length rail system)

-SOPMODs only on 14.5" M4's

-Vltor EMods and Magpul UBR's only on 16" mid-lengths

-Magpul UBR's on 14.5" - 16" barrels with longer rail systems (10.0 - 13.2) (example show above of a UBR on a Noveske with a 14.5" barrel and a 10.0 rail system)

I also recently had the chance to try a Magpul UBR on a 20" rifle and the UBR balanced out the rifle extreemly well.

That's a nice M&P15 you have there. I too have the standard model, but I still have the carry handle on mine. That will change within the next few months when I get an EOtech holographic sight system. I've had it since September and added a UTG quad rail system and folding vertical foregrip. They're not the top quality brand, but the rails don't wobble at all on my M&P15. The foregrip wobbles a bit, but so does the butt stock.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you just bought a Short Barreled Rifle. Does anybody here know what kind of legal ramnifications this brings. Im pretty sure if you buy an SBR upper, the lower must be registered as an SBR. I really never thought about what happens if you buy one from a friend. Can anyone help out here?

Even if the FH is pinned, it still looks shorter than the required 16".
My understanding of "barrel length measurement", per the ATF, is to close the bolt, insert a cleaning rod (preferable non-metallic) from the muzzle end, and measure the length to the last non-detachable part of the barrel (i.e. if the flash hider is truly "pinned"). If it's shorter than 16", then you have a potentially big problem. Longer, you're golden. At least till the "Big O" decides to collect all of our toys.

so don't take it to the range i guess, rather my property in the country to practice with it? maybe pick up a legal upper and bury this one? this is more my SHTF roll-out tool. (the whole 'cold dead fingers' line) and i really don't want to jump thru the paperwork loops only to have the man knocking on my door when obama pushes another clinton-style ban or tries to sign the US onto some UN charter. besides if that ever happens all our handguns will be subject too most likely.

Hmm. Not trying to be that guy here... but guess I will be.

Is this legit?

Guy signs up on here, yesterday. His first, and only posts, are this thread. Shows up with an SBR... that his friend gave him... clueless to the fact about barrel lenght, but has been hunting and shooting for years... and then, when pointed out that it appears to be an NFA item, he says he'll just stick to plinking with it at home....

Sure, not all people are educated on the matter. Could his friend knowingly sell him an NFA item, without explaining? Sure, I guess. Shitty friends do exist. I just have a hard time believing stories like this, anymore, when I read them.

To the OP, if it's true... my apologies for doubting your story, and I hope it gets resolved in a legal manner.

so don't take it to the range i guess, rather my property in the country to practice with it? maybe pick up a legal upper and bury this one? this is more my SHTF roll-out tool. (the whole 'cold dead fingers' line) and i really don't want to jump thru the paperwork loops only to have the man knocking on my door when obama pushes another clinton-style ban or tries to sign the US onto some UN charter. besides if that ever happens all our handguns will be subject too most likely.
i'm not a doom-and-gloomer, just an Eagle Scout....:D
would part numbers gain me any more info here?

thanks guys!

Me personally, I would not even let it see the light of day on my own property. If the "end times" come, it wouldn't surprise me to see the government digging up back yards, or at least sweeping them with metal detectors looking for contraband. Go ahead, call me an alarmist paranoid....
I'd either get it legal and on the NFA registry, or I'd give the upper to a buddy to store (as long as he wasn't in violation by owning an AR lower) and buy a 16.1" upper.

Hmm. Not trying to be that guy here... but guess I will be.

Is this legit?

Yeah, he could be a troll and is dying laughing at us....

Guy signs up on here, yesterday. His first, and only posts, are this thread. Shows up with an SBR... that his friend gave him

"purchased" And he's just showing off his new toy.

... clueless

Plenty of them out there. Just look at TOS.

to the fact about barrel lenght, but has been hunting and shooting for years...

And I say this with all the love in the world...ELMER FUDD.

and then, when pointed out that it appears to be an NFA item, he says he'll just stick to plinking with it at home....

Here you might be onto something.

Sure, not all people are educated on the matter. Could his friend knowingly sell him an NFA item, without explaining? Sure, I guess. Shitty friends do exist.

Plenty of them out there. But I repeat myself.

I just have a hard time believing stories like this, anymore, when I read them.

To the OP, if it's true... my apologies for doubting your story, and I hope it gets resolved in a legal manner.

Just look at the run on AR's, ammunition, magazines and just about everything else related to firearms. People, who would not have ever owned one of the evil black rifles are buying them because they can for now, before they're banned again. Or for an investment (seen prices lately, imagine when they're no more available). Or because... Who knows what psychology is driving them.

sure your point is valid, esp when we're talking about this kind of gear and not guitars! and i'm usually 'that guy' on other forums where trolls come out and play from time to time...
i have been hunting and shooting for years but with other firearms. this is my first purchase of anything like this. all my other rifles are bolts except the mini-30 i used to own and actually sold to help fund this purchase. i was a rabid muzzleloader distance shooter for many years and built quite a few of those beauties for comps, ever cut a card with a flint-lock .50?
and the fellow wasn't a close friend, just someone who shops from time to time in the store i own and knows i'm also and avid shooter. he was basically putting half his collection up for sale b/c he needed the cash. i also got clips and some MOLLE pouches for them too. he also posted a bunch of pics on CraigsList so i don't think he was up to anything other than needing $$ and i wont be bothering him at all about this.

On top of owning the weapon with out registration being a felony it also is considered tax evasion due to not being registered and not having a tax stamp... the penalty is 10 years in prison and up to $250,000. I am not positive on this but it was all I could find.. my 2 cents

Do you plan to move your PEQ-2A over so you can throw a leaf sight on top for your 203? Using a 68 to aim it sucks!

Eh, if I weren't in a training environment then yes I would move the PEQ-2. However for my purposes the 203 is a paperweight, while the PEQ-2 I actually use in training exercises.

Jeff,
That's a 47 round PMAG. Nordic Components makes the kit. You get an aluminum coupler, the bottom half of a PMAG and a longer mag spring. Then you put together on one of you own PMAGs. It works very well. Although it's run 100% thus far I only use to avoid a reload if a stage is over 30-31 rounds and I can't figure out a fast way to reload or reload on the move. I never use it if I have to go prone, it's way too big. If I have to go prone I use two 30 round PMAGs that I have coupled together.

I prefer the 14.5" for the feel up close and will be setting up the 16" with a magnified optic for a little more reach + better placement with the optic.

These 2 will look a little different in a week or so so I thought I'd post the before pictures.
