One of the local PD's here is SW Utah issued RRA's for years until they had problems showing up left and right, now after merging with another city they are using DD's and couldn't be happier. SGPD and Washington County Sheriffs issue Colt.

The agency (in Utah) my neighbor works for issued them Rock River carbines, with EOTech 512 s and TLR3 installed at 6 o'clock on a rail section that was screwed to the stock hand-guards. Nothing else, no sling or anything at all. They qualified with them and have not used them since. Two other agencies (in Utah) I have been working with issued bushmaster's in stock form. One didn't even do a qualification on it, I was told that they haven't even fired them in over a year but they are in all patrol vehicles. The other, qualified with upon hiring...and that is all.

My next project now that I have gone to a private industry job is to try to get a state standard set for at least the training. The garbage they get taught in the academy is also just appalling.

Not to derail a pic thread, I may PM you about some things in the coming months, I need to finish some things up then I am going to start trying to work with them and others. These guys wont have problems, they never shoot them. But I am just afraid of the liability, and I wouldn't want them showing up to a call my family was near or involved in. Imagine an active shooter in a school and the officer shows up with a carbine he has NEVER shot...sad.

and Pic thread, terrible shot but its what i had on my phone. New SBR awaiting stamp, Colt MP, M&P22 and MRP.

Definitely interested to hear how you like that trigger. I'm having trouble choosing between the SD-E and SD-C because I'm not very comfortable with light triggers in an all-purpose gun. I currently have the ALG ACT on my first AR but in process of putting together another one.

And here's a pic for the pic thread :D

Thanks Crosseyedshooter.
And yes it was me. :p I got it with the SD-E from G&R, It came with the Magpul polymer trigger guard, but I saw the Phase 5 winter trigger guard on a photo online and thought it looked good with the SD-E. I have not shot it yet. But I ll give you 1 guess as to what I will be doing this weekend. I will try to get a couple pics at the range. I ll post them and let you know how she shoots.

Hey crosseyedshooter,
First of all very nice rifle, looking forward to seeing your second build. Is that the BCM comp?
I originally didn't set out to buy the SD-E, I was thinking SSA and would have probably preferred the SD-C for the same reason. But in the current market you get what's available. And since you can't go wrong with Geissele or BCM I figured buy once. I am also looking into purchasing a second upper, probably a 20'' with a free float rail and scope for accuracy, after I get good with these iron sights. Might even do a little hunting with it if I get a chance. A buddy of mine just ordered a 20'' chambered in .243. I'll post a pic once he receives it. I like the ALG ACT and also liked the Spikes E-LPK. After playing with the lower a bit I really like the trigger, both stages. Second stage is light but not too light. Like I said Geissele = great triggers. Will definitely let you know how she shoots on Sunday. And more pics.

Crossseyed, nice stick! Any plans on magnified optics? Only reason I ask is you have, in my opinion, the best damn bipod on the market! I dont know what I would do without my Atlas. I run mine on my MA-Ten with MK4 leupy.
Its a great bipod but wouldn't run it on a carbine unless shooting with glass. When I take my rifle in the mountains I leave it in the truck. Ounces equals pounds and if need be I've got my eberlestock to shot off of. On the prairie I pack it.

That is appalling and I don't even know how they get away with that from a legal standpoint! There's a reason for qualification...if a shooting was ever called into questioned, the department and their lawyers can at least say that the officer received some sort of "training" and "maintained" a certain level of "proficiency." My department makes me qualify bi-annually to keep carrying my AR on the street...it used to be a quarterly qualification when there wasn't quite the ammunition shortage. Two different states...two different departments I guess...

Thanks! The bipod is actually for a different build. :dirol:

It's on there temporarily until I get this one zeroed. It can come off pretty easy since it has the QD mount.

Are there any well used, played in the dirt AR's out there? All the pictures I see are of rifles that look like they have never been shot. Same with pistols. How about posting some pictures of weapons that have been used well and still stand up to defending the home front. I hate for my weapons to be the only battered looking ones out there.

That is true but when someone who is new (the no credibility/zero post count part Stick mentioned) and starts saying things such as that it is considered rude around here. Sort of like busting up into a strangers house and saying I have a better truck than you do in your garage or you should check my house out. It's much nicer.

Manners go along way around here. Staying in ones lane until you know what you didn't know before hand goes a long way as well. rgswain, welcome to the board and hope you enjoy it!

http://www.mechmodels.com/images/m4gery_sprgery_061413_1.jpg

http://www.mechmodels.com/images/m4gery_sprgery_061413_2.jpg

Just recently got into assembling ARs (bad time, I know), the top was a CMMG bargain bin I got a couple years back which was probably built from spare parts. Replaced the buffer tube with a mil-spec diameter buffer tube, BCG with a DD, and a Geissele SSA trigger. Couple weeks back I decided to replace the barrel with a DD barrel (notice a trend here?) with a MI micro gas block and MI Gen 2 T series rail. Shoots much better and much more accurate than the old CMMG barrel did.

Bottom I assembled last year. BCM middy recce upper because they didn't have the Mk12 upper half I wanted, so substituted the recce upper. Lower assembled from a parts kit with Geissele SSA trigger and VLTOR EMOD stock. Scope is a Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x. Pardon the RDS on the scope, experimenting with RDS options for it and used a cheap PA mount and micro dot to experiment before I throw down coin on a real RDS.

Hoping to have a third one assembled from old parts soon - already put together an upper from old CMMG barrel and BCG, using shoddy DPMS A3 upper receiver. It'll be a beater/loaner that I'll use to test out some painting techniques (the two above desperately need paint).

The rubber bands keep the sling in check when not in use, but keep the sling with the gun. I stole the idea from a serious pipe hitting guy.

I found that rapidly slamming the bolt release against my left butt cheek screaming " get in there you son of a bitch" is obviously the quickest and most efficient tactical method of a combat reload while in the stowed sling configuration. It uses all GROSS MOTOR skillz and no Fine motor skillz and allows the operator to quickly and efficiently get back in the fight. It is absolutely the best method I've found in pretend combat.

Actually the release is pretty easy to get at. You can run the charging handle as well if necessary. :)

Sorry, just saw your post now. The rail is a "Global Military Gear AR-15 Quad Rail with Forward Extension." It is a budget rail but great quality and very solid. There is a small gap under the front sight sling mount which is covered up with the AFG2.

Nice job and great looking weapon. The more I see patriot brown, the more I want to paint one of my carbines with it, but also painting the RE and barrel. It appears to be one of the closest colors to the actual socom FDE I've seen yet. IMO, all the other FDEs are rebranded desert tan or desert sand.

So far my favorite configuration, the placement of the WML with the Thorntail Mount then backed by the handstop makes for a natural yet solid grip on the DDV1.

I was afraid at first that I would not like the High Rise KAC mount. After actually shooting with NOD then without I have found the mount actually sits the T-1 in a position where I am comfortable looking through the optic while still maintaining my normal cheek weld. It also allows added space for me to get behind when wearing bigger ear protection cups.

In terms of the mount maintaining 0, this is still being tested but so far it has maintained 0. I zeroed the optic on the KAC mount then shot about 250-300 rounds. I took the optic and mount off and put it onto my 870 just to QA the mount and T-1. I shot 4 rounds and returned the optic to my V1. The setup maintained 0 for another 200 or so.(until I left the range) Besides maybe changing to a A5 system, I think my V1 is staying this way, it only took 11 months of constant trial and error to find that ;)

VIP3R & 86,

The BC & BCM comp are honestly so close I'd honestly take either one. Each one has its own characteristics obviously. The Battlecomp has basically zero muzzle flip. As noted before it actually dips down. Downside with this 14.5" barrel is that is has quite a bit of side blast. Not my findings but my buddy who was shooting right beside me. Quite odd considering I used a Battlecomp for years on a 16" barrel and I never had one complaint from anyone else about side blast from a BC.

Shooting the other rifle (w/the BCM comp) that also has a 14.5" barrel right next to the same friend on the same afternoon I received not one complaint about excessive noise/blast. The BCM does have a small bit of muzzle rise but it is very controllable. I let a lady shoot that rifle w/the BCM comp on full auto (she had never fired a full auto rifle before) last Saturday night and she kept it very flat after a quick lesson on firing stance.

On full auto both are fantastic with a slight edge towards the BC.

The BC equipped gun weighs 9lbs. The BCM equipped one weighs less than 7 and the lightweight rifle actually kicks less. They both have an A5H3 buffer and yes there is a slight difference in gas port size but it is a good testament to how well Bravo Co. did with their new compensator.

Both are fantastic but I would probably lean (ever so slightly) towards the BCM if I were to build another 14.5" rifle and had to choose between the two.

-Jax

ETA:

For kicks and giggles here is a night vid of the BCM comp on full auto shooting XM856. Didn't get a chance to film the Battlecomp at night.

Haha.. You know I was embarrassed by that, specially after Jax bad ass pictures.. With a few great courses coming up, I'm looking forward to giving them some expression. If that fails I'm putting them in a dirt hole. In my defense, I don't think anything has stayed on my DD for more then 500 rounds before me ditching it and I'm just now seeing some steady ammo.

After last weekend CC there is definitely dirt involved. :)

But yeah a couple of weeks ago I cut out some cardboard into some random multi cam patterns and sprayed some bronze colored paint over the rifle. I liked the color but thought it stood out too much. Here is a pic I took a couple of weeks ago after the bronze was applied:

http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac279/jaxman7/IMG_20130616_172945_214_zps4da4dbf9.jpg

Like I said I liked the color but thought it stood out too much. I then got a can of the original color brown I used to paint hershey and made the bronze color a little more subtle. The picture you quoted me on is the result of slightly spraying over the bronze w/the brown. Thought it turned out pretty well.

Oh and fantastic close up of the Noveske barrel!

My take on the modern patrol rifle.

In today's world the rifle is still a useful tool for self defense and other duties such as law enforcement. Both uses are set up with very similar roles and tasks. The main role of course is defending one's self from a violent attacker; except with today's sue happy world any action you or I would could be taken to court. So the ability to control your fire is important as is identifying your target and what's behind it.

The key components to a patrol rifle are the following.

1. A light weight semi-automatic carbine chambered in a intermediate service cartridge.
2. Co-witnessed red dot optics and iron sights.
3. A visible white light.
4. Adjustable stock for length of pull.
5. A simple but adjustable sling.

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a553/40_SuperAwesome/20130627_092943_zps8f141991.jpg

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a553/40_SuperAwesome/20130627_092840_zps33574952.jpg

My two example here are both done for under $1,000.

The AR-15 is a mix master build from good parts. The barrel is a 16 inch HBAR Colt Barrel along with a Colt "F"sight tower, Colt bolt carrier group, Spike's lower, DPMS lower parts kit, upper is made by Cerro Forge for Double Star Arms, DPMS upper parts kit with tear drop forward assist. The furniture is Magpul's CTR stock and MOE handguard and VFG. The light is a Surefire Universal Weapon light with a LED build. Sling is a two point Condor Tactical. Optics are an N-Cell Eotech co-witnessed with a Magpul MBUS.

The AK pattern rifle is an older WASR-10. Optic is a Blue Ring Tac-Point Aimpoint clone on a Midwest Industries mount and is co-witnessed. Stock is a CAA metal stock with a standard M4 stock and slip on rubber butt pad. Handguards are Hogue's overmold with rails and Magpul VFG. Light is an older Streamlight M3. Weapon has been upgraded with a Tapco single hook G2 trigger and Tapco AK-74 style muzzle brake. Sling is another 2 point Condor Tactical.

The little guy is growing fast, he's pretty awesome.

I just finished this build today. On the upper is a VLTOR MUR 1S upper receiver, 18" McGowen stainless fluted 1/8 twist barrel, , JP 15 1/2" tub, BCM charging handle, Surefire muzzle device (this is temporary until I get my AAC can mount) and a Young National Match BCG. The lower is a LMT with the obvious MAGPUL furniture with a Geissele SSA trigger.

Now I have to get it ready to paint and I have to find a good deal on a Leupold MR/T piece of glass with a illuminated reticle....:)

After going through 4 or 5 different uppers and setups, I've finally found my favorite simple setup: my BCM bfh 16" lightweight middy. Will add an Aimpoint PRO once I find a good deal and still deciding on a muzzle device - leaning toward a Rainier RMC...

I have lived in CA for the last 28years of my life. During those years I have been an avid collector of 1911s and glock style pistols. Have always wanted an AR just didn't want to mess with a Cali legal one! Moved to Washington and this M4 was the first purchase I made and definitely not the last!

What you guys think?

WOW I'm so confused lol! I shot the rifle for the first time yesterday and had a range staff tell me that I had them on backwards. I thought that he was wrong but I took his years of experience in consideration and flipped them around and NOW they are backwards. I'm going to the range tomorrow and thanking him for making me look bad! SMH ****ing newbs ;-) its okay i can take it!

I have heard of running the front sight backwards, to get that extra centimeter of distance from the rear sight, but that is usually on a bullpup with little top rail. The rear sight being backward as well was the unusual part.

http://i.imgur.com/nhK3Ugj.jpg?1

BCM rifle with a 16" BFH light weight middy, Aimpoint H1 2MOA, and I just dropped in a Geissele SSA-E trigger(which is fantastic). The standard trigger that came in my BCM lower was really bad. I spent way more money than I wanted to but I am happy with the results. The only thing I see myself doing in the future is playing with different sling attachment points

Interesting, I grew up there and couldn't wait to leave. Guess it all depends on your perspective. I will admit that it is a fine state if you are interested in distance shooting or machine gun shoots. To paraphrase another poster, we don't get a lot of that in the Northeast.

Being raised on a large family farm going back three generations definitely has its advantages. Not only some of the best hunting and fishing anywhere, but the things that aren't immediately seen. Like knowing what hard work is and the rewards from it. The open country with stars so clear it's unreal. Clean air, clear water, and the recognizable red dirt. Even now as I'm writing this while driving a tractor, I'm on the tallest hill in a mile in every direction. I can see a couple hundred cattle, not all ours, fifteen wild turkey to the south, eight deer to the southeast, and two coyotes looking for mice not even 70 yards from me. Trees, creeks, full ponds, and wheat and hay fields as far as I can see. The knowledge and ability to provide for yourself and your neighbor, not relying on the government. The Heartland. I hope I can live here for the rest of my life. Happy Independence Day everyone.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've been wondering this for awhile; which SMR is that? ...cus it has the anti-rotation feature and 4/5 o'clock & 7/8 o'clock vents of the MK 4...but the removable rail sections w/steel inserts from the MK 1. Is it perhaps a pre-production model or some sort of special release? Thank you in advance for clarifying this!

What happened to the front sight?

It's integrated into the rail, right at the end.

The length of the 40 round mag makes the rifle looks a bit goofy.
Having said that ..... can't wait to get some Magpul 40 round PMags!!

Newest one, I know they aren't well loved here, but I love it. Plus, It was under a grand (999) lol. I'm going to get a decent Luepold Mark AR scope for it and a new mount, but until next pay, the Nikon 3x9 will have to work. Might possibly do some offset sights and set it up for 3gun if I can find any local matches.

A bit of an update to my DD. I just couldn't work with the shorter rail. I felt crunched.

Thanks. I can't wait to shoot it in the new configuration.

I honestly wasn't sure how I was going to like the URX. It is my first KAC rail and I am used to Troy, DD, and Noveske stuff. It was a bit different to install but not difficult and it balances out the gun really well. the only thing that sucked was cutting down the FSB.

Ya thats about the only thing I dislike about the URX rails, once they're on, they're pretty much on for good. At least the bottom removes easily enough. It was also a surprise to me how light and thin profiled it is, even my URX II with all 4 rails. So far, its my favorite upper, mainly because of the KAC rail. My friend always told me how good the KAC coolaid was but I always resisted. Its not like coolaid at all, its freaking kryptonite for my wallet. :suicide2::lol:
