Hello everyone.
This is my first post and would like to use this opportunity to transition from a competitor forum to this one.
I’m not a newbie in firearms. I’m pretty familiar with rifles (long range and 22lr) and pistols. I have started gaining interest in ARs for the past 6 month.
So after a lot of reading and thinking, this is the setup I ended up with for my first and only AR.
These are the parts I used:
I wasn’t sure (and I’m still not sure) what is going to be the purpose of this rifle. So I tried to make it a more all-around gun, without spending too much money.
Rifle: Colt 6920 MP-FDE
I figured going with a Colt is the safest bet. I could always sell it and recover a good portion of my expense in case I want to go a different route.
Optics:
Burris PEPR QD mount/ Vortex Dimondback 2-7X35.
Burris TRS-125 highrise red dot.
I can swap quickly between both mounts and they both hold zero
Sling:
VTAC 2 point sling. This one was kind of a no brainer.
The front mount is a GMG Picatinny Rail Sling Mount. The edges are a little sharp, but I don’t think it’s a show stopper and for $11, you can’t beat the price
I did hesitate a lot on how/where to mount the sling on the stock. This is how I ended up running it.
Picatinny rails:
Two 5 slots Magpul rails. One for the front sling mount, the other to mount my Harris 6-9 swivel bipod for bench shooting
Vertical grip:
I decided to not run a vertical grip, even though one came with the rifle.
I have found out that the 5 slot Picatinny rail covered with MagPul XTM covers, is sufficient and provides enough comfort for shooting.
Light:
I’m not planning to put a light. My primary weapon for self-defense is a Glock 35 with a light. I don’t think it’s a good idea to use an AR for a primary self-defense weapon. Cleaning rooms with an AR requires a lot of training (which I don’t have) and is cumbersome, (since you don’t have a freehand to open a door). If it comes to that, I’ll use my pistol to get to the AR and gather everyone in a room until help comes. I might be wrong, but this is my rational.
Next steps:
I have already shot around 1000 rounds through this rifle. It’s very accurate and reliable.
The trigger is very nice….for a milspec trigger… But I must admit that I wouldn’t mind a better trigger for bench shooting plus a longer freefloated handguard. But I think it makes more sense to buy a new rifle that already has a mid-length free floated handguard (like a DD) and change the trigger (or built a new rifle from ground up); rather than make these changes on my current setup. That will be a new project , in addition to my current setup (I guess I’m like all of you guys. One AR is just the start. I will end up with a new rifle soon)
The only think I’m considering adding to my current setup is a Magpul BAD lever.
So what are your thoughts?

I think you need to train on using your "all around" carbine in a CQB role, including indoors, otherwise you're just limiting yourself and your options.

This. You should really consider adding a light. You can add a IWC mount and Surefire G2X for $120. I'm sure you could find a better deal with a little looking. With out the light you are definitely limiting you option. Good call on the Colt.

A mod should be able answer this question for you if you send one of them a PM, but if I had to guess I'd say there's no need to start a thread seeking validation of your set-up. You posted a pic, and it fits nicely in this already well established thread.

I use off set irons for 3gun competition and it so second nature for me to just roll the gun inside 50 yards I don't even think about it. In my area of NE Indiana, I can go from inside my house to having 100-500 yard shots in any direction and therefore I require something with magnification. I tried variable power optics but my quest to keep this rifle as "simple" as possible and light weight pushed me towards the ACOG. 4x for bad guys at distance and offset irons for bad guys in my face.

Just thought I'd post some pics of my first AR type rifle, I am not new to rifles, it's just that most of my experience is with Bullpups. 10yrs in the Foreign Legion with a FAMAS will do that. I have a Tavor and an FS 2000 but due to a lack of available spare parts I decided to by an AR. After much lurking and a LOT of usage of the search button I decided that I really didn't want a piston operated rifle. I do believe they have their place its just not the mountains of Montana... So I bought an FDE Sig M400 (which I will sight in tomorrow.) as you can see in the photos I have made some changes to. I added a magpul ACS stock a railed gas block and a Yankee Hill front BUIS. The LGS was out of the rear BUIS so for the time being it has the Magpul that came with the rifle until the one I ordered arrives. The meprolight M21 that is on the rifle is just on the rifle for the photos, it is from my TAVOR and sits too high on the AR and renders the BUIS obsolete until it is removed. Any way here is some photos of it.

Like I said the M21 is just on the M400 for the photos, this rifle will be getting a T-1 or an Aimpoint PRO. I kinda like the M21 but it does have a lot of the drawbacks people say it does.

If you do not have the coin for a T-1, you might want to take a good look at the H-1. Unless you plan on SCUBA diving with your rifle and Aimpoint, you really don't need the T-1.
I like the Micros simply because they are so light weight. The Aimpoint Pro is a tad hefty. Some claim they like the larger diameter tube on it. Honestly, I just don't notice the difference. I have mine down the rail a bit on my ARs and all I see is the red dot as I keep both eyes open. It's great for quick acquisition.

I've got a friend who has an AR chambered in .300 blackout and when he puts a can on it and uses subsonic ammo the only thing you can hear is the bolt cycling. It's amazing.

Yeah I know what your talking about! I have a friend with a 9" AAC upper on an LMT lower and one with Noveske 9" both are just amazing with a can on them! If I had to choose I pick the AAC and that's only if I had to have the AAC SDN-6, because AAC won't warranty their suppressors if they are on a rifle that is shorter then 11" and has anything other then a 1:7 twist. Or so I have been told.
Now to that rifle, my .02.
I'd get rid of the Mepro and get an Aimpoint Micro T-1 or H-1.
That's GREAT advise. Can't go wrong with an Aimpoint.

So, I'm giving it a chance. If it doesn't work for me, I might go with a scout ultra mounted a little further back with one of those Haley mounts that attaches between the rails.
With this setup, it's the first time I've ever thought I might prefer the micro to the standard KAC front sight. I rest my thumb on it and the edges are no joke. I might take a file to them.

Goteron kindly sent me a preproduction sample to try out and I wouldn't run an X300 without one on a rifle now. They are that good and the price is right as well. I ran an X300 for about 3 months and like it but am leaning back to the Scout.....for now. One thing I really like about the X300 mounted at the 12 is that when shooting support side I don't have to move my thumb back in a weird position to activate the switch like I do on a clicky cap on my Scouts. This...to me..also helps maintain a better grip on the rifle on the support side while using the light.
The Scout, I love that big simple button. I will say the Unity Tactical EXO actually helps me find the switch b/c it sort of acts as a funnel and a reference point. I have noticed that with both lights sticking over the same amount of barrel the X300 makes the gun less front heavy than an M600c. + for the X300 over the 2 cell Scout lights. I love the modularity of the Scouts. Upgradable heads, Vampire heads, etc. + for the Scout. And of course price. In 500 lumens, obviously the X300U is much cheaper. * for the X Series. If you dont want to use a switch and run a short barrel the X300 doesnt extend out as far so you'll get less carbon build up on the lens. Like I said I like both. If the X300 had more modularity, like the Scout series (changeable heads) I would love that. Sort of a dedicated X300 long gun light.

Switched out the old Omega X rail for a 13" provectus rail by head down (made by seekins)
I love this rail. Of course had to do a quick coloring job for it to match. Got it on sale when
primary arms had the veterens day blowout sale. Glad I was able to snag one.

I just swapped my beloved 10.5" LMT for this Sig P556 pistol. Replaced the sights with MI front and Troy rear so as to co-witness with the RMR. Took 5 minutes to add a pistol tube and the Sig SB15. The headlight will probably be replaced with a TLR @ 9 o'clock as not sure I like knuckling the on/off. But I bet it looks like an oncoming train from the wrong end.

Have to eat my words a bit after some friends and I headed out into BFE BLM land and setting up a fun run last weekend.
Turns out I actually do not mind VFGs (or at least stubby ones) when you really gotta work the light in conjunction with obstacles more than simply working the light while prone/standing/more static. Gave the run a shot with a friend's DD equiped with tango down stubby vfg and did notice the ease of more flexibility.
So I went out and got myself a Gear sector stubby vfg to go with the light mount and actually really don't mind it at all as I can still easily work the light while holding the rifle traditionally at any time by simply using the vfg as a hand stop.

Use more light, a LOT more light. Soft light though.
Much like shooting guns, photography is often more about luck (besides still life), knowledge, and experience than equipment.
And like shooting, know your target's background. Like plugs in electrical outlets ;)

Or just do what I did... get personal lessons on photography from Stickman... with the right lighting, I used a 9 year old Fuji S7000 to take some pretty decent photos.

I just took it in my room which doesn't have the best lighting with my iPhone so it isn't a great quality picture. I honestly would like to get into photography and get a real camera and a light box or something. Anyway, thanks for the advice. Also, I edited it so it looks darker than the original.

Did you just cut the front sight block and reassemble the upper with a different rail? I have a standard carbine with a front sight block I am thinking about doing the same too but was considering just buying a DD clamp on gas block. I like the pinned front block a little more though.

I'm really liking this CMR. Now that the Scout/offset mounts and covers are out I'm liking it a lot more.
Scouts and offsets are out? I didn't get the memo. I'm still enjoying my mini scout with my gear sector
offset mount. Something for everyone out there I guess.

Is this the factory Cerakoted Aero upper & lower receiver? I was going to order up a couple of sets to match up with the Magpul FDE furniture but wasn't sure how it would look. I kind of wanted a two-tone look but was afraid they would be really close, but not quite which doesn't look as good as when they're different looking like this. Looks good.
