Need some light ideas

Alright, here is the situation. I need to put a light on my 6920 w/Omega 7.0 rail (the side sling swivel is still in place, and I'd prefer not to remove it, but will if necessary). I'm a righty and I'm trying to stay away from using a VFG. Also I don't wanna go much over $150 if possible.

So lemme hear some recommendations please... I'm trying to figure out what the optimum setup is on a carbine rail without using a VFG. Pictures of similar setups and explantions of why you chose that would be appreciated too.

Some thoughts so far:

1) I am thinking a TLR-1, but I'm not sure if I'll have enough room on a carbine length rail without the VFG. If it will fit, can the activation be manipulated easily while mounted at 3 o'clock?

2) I know G2 with LEDs are popular. Does this work well without a VFG? If so, what is the best position for easy manipulation as a righthanded shooter?

I use the SureFire 6P with a Malkoff Devices dropin. The TNVC drop-in is also recommended, its a little cheaper. Super amount of light from a small package.

I mount my lights on the Front sight Base using GG&G Slic Thing. You have to buy two of them to have the rails on both sides of your FSB.

I use Weaver 1" rings to hold the light to the Slic Thing. They work great.

Probably do all of this for $140 or so.

Be kinda silly to have the Omega rail on there purely for the QD swivel mount. :sarcastic: No, if I were to do something similar, I'd probably use an offset mount to put it in a similar spot.

Yeah, it would be silly. That's one reason I've never understood a quad rail on a carbine. There is just enough room for your hand to have a little leeway. Plenty of room on top for gadgets but no real spare room on the sides or bottom.

Heck, I have two mid-lengths and I'd like to have another 3" of handguard to reach out.

But maybe that's just me...

ok.. 1st you need to do research on all the light before buying.
I use surefire m961 love it. it is bright enought to stun a person and blind them for up to 20 to 30 seconds for them to recovery their vision in the dark. You can't do wrong with the surefire. :D

Is that sort of a round about way of saying don't go with the TLR-1? I know alot of guys use only Surefire.

I've researched quite a bit, but without them in hand they all start to blur together. I do know that I'd prefer something that was designed to be a weaponlight, and not a handheld. But most of those are higher than my budget. That is why I am interested in the TLR-1 and peoples opinions of them...

I'm right-handed as well. I have found the best place for lights on my guns is at around 11 o'clock, about level with the top of the handguards. This allows me to activate the light by moving just my thumb to the side an inch or so and pressing.

My favorite setup currently is a Surefire G2 LED in a Gear Sector mount. The flashlight takes a good bit of finesse (by which I mean force) to get into the mount, but it all mounts up nicely. It's a rather light solution as well, about 140 grams if I'm recalling my numbers correctly.

On my lightweight gun I'm currently using a Streamlight TLR-1, primarily because it saves about an ounce. It's a little trickier for me to activate, but I just started using it and think I'll be able to get used to it.

I would put the omega 7.0 on the EE for 210. Buy an DD Omega X FSP at gilbertsguns.com for 220. Put a TLR-1 (approx 100) at 12 o'clock in front of the FSP. Grand total of about $110.

I thought about the Omega X, and while I like the design, I do not have the tools to change out the barrel nut. I might do it to my other 6920 though when the funds allow...

So does anyone know which setup has a smaller footprint, a G2 in Viking Tactics mount or a TLR-1? Seems like alot of people who use the G2 mount it far enough forward in the mount to leave the tailcap accessible which ends up eating a fair amount of rail space...

Well economy won out... I went with a G2LED in a VTAC mount. I will be upgrading to the gear sector mount for the smaller footprint on the rail as funds allow.

No thank you.. Read the reviews, saw the photos of the large oval hotspot of the laser, decided against it. If I want to cut stuff, I'll use a knife.

I really like a Surefire G2, G2L, or G2 with Malkoff drop-in mounted to the 12:00 rail via a VLTOR Offset Scout Mount and offset to the non-ejection port side putting the light in approx an 11:00 position.

I have also recently taken a liking to the Streamlight PolyTac LED. It's pretty inexpensive, has nice output and a "clickie" style tail-cap with lock-out.

I've got a G2L on my SBR, a 9v converted G2 with Malkoff drop-in on my 16" Middy, and a Streamlight PolyTac LED on my Arsenal SGL21 AK.

The Middy and SGL use the VLTOR Offset Mount and the SBR wears a Standard Scout Mount in conjunction with a Midwest Industries FSB mount as the handguards are too short for my prefered grip if mounted to the rail.

All these combo's put out good light for a reasonably long time and all combo's put the light in my prefered 11:00 position.

The SBR currently has a stubby TD VFG, the Middy a Magpul AFG, and the AK no VFG.

No issues with these set-ups with or without a VFG if you use a high hold like myself and many others do. It also fairly easy to reach over across the top of the rail to actuate the light with the right hand's thumb when shooting from the non-dominate side.

I run a Fenix TK11 on mine with a VLTOR offset mount set at 11 o'clock.

If anyone reading this is considering that light my recommendation is to spend the extra money on the latest R5 head it is much better than the older series with the R2 head.

I run my SBR with the light off the top rail (DD Lite 9.0 on 11.5 barrel) using either a TLR-1s or a G2 in a Gear Sector offset mount. The position of my AFG in both cases is such that I can activate either one easily with my thumb. The only problem I've had is with the G2 in the GS mount taking soot from the PWS brake if I move it forward to the most comfortable thumb-activation position. I've been lightly coating it with some silicone grease, which works well. No problem with soot on the Streamlight.

I moved the front sight back enough to mount either light. I tend to prefer the TLR-1s because it quick-detaches and the lack of soot. I have an extra Battlecomp...I may try that and see if it's any better than the PWS. I suspect it will be.

then why don't you just get surefire x400 with light and laser. I have one for sale at the moment of the new model with170 lumen LED and the old model is 130 lumen led. It could last up to 2 hours . with 2 cr123 batteries.

What I've found works for me on a 7" is a TLR-1 mounted in a DD offset mount on the top rail at 11:00.

I really want one of these GearSector mounts. They are so sleek and have such a small footprint. I will be getting one after I finish buying the kids and the wife Christmas presents. Might just be a little XMas present to myself....
