I am going the sbr route and trying to figure out my best alternative (price wise). So far that means cutting a 16” chrome lined barrel that I currently own. I know benchrest shooters do this all the time with stainless barrels but can you cut, thread, and re crown a chrome lined barrel and retain its accuracy?

Chrome lined barrels can be cut, rethreaded and recrowned with no ill effects to the chrome lining (this isn't bumper chrome).

I do about a half dozen of these a week.
I have not had a single accuracy complaint in several years of doing this.
I have had many compliments that the barrels are more accurate when I finished with them.
I attribute this to the quality of my crown job compared to a factory crown.

Ask GotM4 who he sends his barrels to for machine work... ;)

Several years ago, Kurt Wala at KKF did several M-16A1 barrels for me. Some other folks had LESO M16s done as well. There were no ill effects from the cutting. He also opened the gas ports to dims I do not recall. They ran well with SAAMI and NATO ammo, even some notoriously underpowered frangible in use at the time. There was no apparent effect on accuracy, but I don't recall any deliberate tests being done either.

I did a batch of m16a1 barrels recently as well for a guy that's using them for 22 conversion uppers...

ar15barrels, how busy are you folks right now. I have a heavy barrel I would like to have fluted. Do you have a slow season when I could send it in and get it back fairly fast.

I don't do fluting.

Dtech (http://www.dtechsuperstore.com/mili%20Guns.htm) or Adco can set you up.

I recommend simply profiling the barrel if you are looking to reduce the weight.
The weight savings from fluting is minimal compared to profiling.
The cost of fluting is significantly more than profiling too.
