I've used a few of the benchmade autos that the Army used to hand out. Honestlynthey dont hole up all that well. I bought a version of the zero tolerance autos on impulse and its quite a bit better. Better handle, better steel, better action and much better safety. I dont carry an auto anymore but if I did that would be the one.

Autos are kinda cool but not really much, if any faster than a standard quality blade with a thumb stud/wheel. I also wouldn't want to rely on an auto folder as a every day carry blade. I have never seen one that lasted. They are all spring actuated, and springs break/wear-out.

My favorite daily pocket carry knives are Emersons. The "Wave" feature makes them faster than any auto out of the pocket with practice as the blade is already being opened as it is pulled from the pocket. Emersons are heavy duty blades, and they have some slick new designs like the "roadhouse". I've been carrying some form of an Emerson in my pocket for the past 12 years now.

FYI, California law prohibits possession and/or carry of any automatic knife unless the blade is 2" or shorter.

I've got a couple, but they sit in the safe. I've not yet seen a true pushbutton auto that was as stout as an assisted or standard folder.

I like the following opening methods (in rough order of preference):

Spyderco Hole
"Flipper" blade protrusion
Emerson Wave
Emerson Disc

I LOVE my large CQC-7 wave! It is absolutely fastest knife around. But I wish I could get Emerson's chisel grind razor sharp. I'll be switching to a large Chris Reeves Sabenza after carrying an Emerson since 1998. I REALLY am going to miss the wave :(

If you can find an old Benchmade Mini-Rukus auto model 6150 it is the cats meow.

I bought one and LOVE it, lots of useful blade, excellent ergo's, s30v steel, and it fires hard.

My Emerson knife was sharp as hell from the factory. As soon as my knife goes dull I will not trust myself to sharpen it. I will send it back to Emerson and have them sharpen it for me. I know for a fact that the wave is the fastest opening folder in existence, and much tougher than any auto.

So an LEO can't carry one or own one? I'm confused because I've seen a lot of guys with them over the years and a lot of dealers in CA.

I used to carry a Benchmade AFO on duty back in the day, but the Emerson Waves are *much* faster and I have been carrying a couple of them for years. I also converted some Benchmade Griptillians to wave carry and this gives me reversible strong/support hand carry as well.

I have been carrying a Gerber 06 Automatic for several months now and like it a lot. I think you can still find them for around $100. Make sure you don't confuse this knife with the F.A.S.T. (assisted opening) version. The Automatic is made in the USA and the FAST version is made somewhere else (China I think). The knife is big and stout.

I prefer autos -- just bought a Benchmade AFO II serrated ($195) - I've never had a tanto before. My trusty ol' mini-Reflex has been a great knife for many years. Reliability-wise, I've never had a problem. I have replaced springs on occasion if it starts opening a little slow and doesn't respond to brake cleaner followed by some CLP. Springs are cheap ($2.00) and easy to replace. I always keep a couple of extra around.
