Thanks!

I don't think that they have been released yet, although I could be wrong. According to the rumor mill there are only going to be 900 made due to insurance issues. The 900 are going to be allocated to Magpul dealers based on sales. So in a nutshell we are talking about 900 forged lowers with typical Magpul quality and elevety million guys kicking, screaming, bitching, biting, whining, and complaining to get one.

This is all correct.

Magpul will allocate them to Dealers that have have been with them the longest and have also moved a lot of their products (not just their mags).

G&R Stands to most likely get between 20-30 of these stripped lowers (maybe more).

No worries.... I live in Colorado not far from Magpul and I know the UPS schedule. :)

Grant,

Give me a heads up when you think you might start getting some please. I gotta decide weather to just go wuth another LMT based Carbine or branch out to the Magpul option. They sure are pretty!

Thanks!

I saw them at SHOT in January, they're quite nice. I don't know if I'll buy one. They're perfect for south paws.

From what I understand, roughly $300.

That is a lot for 1 lower, you can buy 3 for that price.

Looks like a nice lower ... but what makes it "better" than any of the top quality billet lowers we already have? You can pick up Sun Devil lowers for under $150 ...

I'm not knocking this lower. Magpul's rep for quality stuff is well known. But $300 - $400 makes me ask "what's so special" about this item?

Define "better". Exclusivity brings a higher price tag, as does a lack of economy of scale, which is a factor with the small number of pieces. My rifle has what amounts to a $300 lower now, and I know I could sell it for that or more in an hour if I wanted to. The customer for a lower like this is probably not the same guy who's buying lowers for future projects at a hundred bucks or so a pop. The customer for these is a) a Magpul fanboy (nothin' wrong with that!) or 2) a collector of unusual, limited edition stuff. Or maybe a third: somebody who wants something his friends don't have and can't get because of the small numbers.

How can any AR owner not be a Magpul fanboy to at least SOME degree ...

I was originally expecting someone to claim the lowers were made of unobtanium or were blessed by the Dali Lama or something ... but then I remembered where I was ... :)

Is this a one-time run? 900 pcs does not sound like a lot to me. I'm wondering if they'd even recover their costs.

They said only about 900 of the billet lowers will be made. After that...at some point down the road they are planning on building forged lowers in the same shape at higher quantities.

It always seemed to me that the difference between "billet" and "forging" was semantics. The only difference is that the billet is forged into the shape of a brick and machined, while the forging is forged into the rough shape of its finished part. Its not like the billet is just a block of aluminum that hasn't been bashed with a big damn hammer; it has.

Talked to Magpul today about them. Think of these lowers a favor to the Magpul faithful instead of a money making thing. It is true that a very small amount of these will made so that kind of makes them a collectors item IMHO.

I don't know what retail price is going to be and don't think Magpul is even going to set a retail price. I would however expect the price to push the $400 range though.

I'm a Magpul whore (ask Kisara) but wow, I don't think I'm going to be laying down three or four bills for one of these. I mean they're cool and all but unless they help me beat everyone else on the O-course, what's the point? :p

How much are the forged, more "mass produced" versions going to be? I'd be willing to pay say $30-$50 over a standard lower just to have the extra little features of the Magpul lower (and the logo of course) but not $200-$300 more. You know how many cups of coffee and donuts I can buy with that kind of money?! :D

I know of guys tht have dropped 4 grand for a H&K 416 upper. It is all a matter of your priorities.

Not Gold plated, but very limited production.

The way companies keep prices down on billet lowers (for instance) is to make tons of them. Magpul is only making about 900 of them. When you order fewer, you pay more.

Every time thats been brought up, the anti-billet crowd happily ignores that part.

The end answer is that the Magpul lower is an expensive and limited production lower that most people won't be able to get their hands. With under 900 being sold, its going to be an exclusive club, and it appears some people already have their feelings hurt.

For people who don't like it, thats fine, you probably wouldn't have been able to get one anyway.
