View Full Version : Decision To Make

I have learned quite a bit on M4 type rifles by listening to what has been said on this forum and I appreciate the information and honesty from those who know.
I put together a Bushmaster lower with a Rock River Entry Model with 16" barrel upper. After learning I could have done a lot better for the same money, I need to make a decision. Upgrade the carbine or sell and buy one of the top brands. I would like to have a hard use rifle, so from what I understand the barrel (4140), complete carrier assembly, buffer tube assy. should be replaced. It would seem that selling at the next Gunshow would be the best option. Has anyone been in this situation before?
Thanks in advance for your input.

I'm not far away from your situation. You might be better off, parting your gun out.
I'm wondering at which point you can "save" a Frankengun.

I wouldn't replace any of that stuff. I would buy a spare bolt and cam pin (all BCM). I would replace the CAR buffer with a H buffer. And then just replace the barrel when it no longer grouped as well as I liked or when it no longer headspaced, no reason to replace good parts.

while I agree with Gotm4, at the same time, if you have the time to wait and do not need a rifle *tomorrow* or anytime really soon, I would tend to say if you want something else, do it.
Knowing us men, it will bug the shit out of you everytime you shoot it. That is how our brains work...unfortunately..
Life is too short not to get what you want...;)

I've rode in too many aircraft with cylinder compression in the "60s" and used too many pieces of military equipment that were "circle-X'd" to get too excited about weapons malfunctions.
I agree with this site's fundamental purpose, which if I understand it, is to wade through the b.s. on other sites and to have ARs that are reliable and accurate.
I think there are two kinds of "us men". To take things to extreme examples, One kind is finicky to the point of paralysis, and is bothered by perceived value inequities, and the other is a slob, who figures that if he has toilet paper in the form of an AR, he can take on the zombies all day long. I'm interested in whether one can strike a balance, here.
Though, as in most things, there is a level of quality that makes pure, economic sense. For now, I'm probably going to follow gotM4's advice, as it makes sense, to me.
